I was hoping to do it during my gap year before uni but it makes sense that it would be easier with a degree. You wouldn't happen to have any resources on the matter would you?

Thank you!

All 3 are perfect examples of the monomyth; read this to see: http://www.thewritersjourney.com/hero's_journey.htm

I do not know much about islam, so I cannot speak to whether or not Muhammed portrays THJ. Both Jesus and Buddha (and many other people, read The Hero With A Thousand Faces to understand more about it specifically) start off in the ordinary world, get a call to leave it (i.e. find out answers to their questions for themselves, unhappy with the answers given), experience resistance (ex. Buddha's father), meets someone that offers them guidance, commits to the new world (finding the truth), is tested (buddha refusing temptations), etc. You should have no issue filling in the rest if you follow the link.

Would you mind telling me more about your first trip @ 22? Very, very interested in doing something similar.

You'll have to forgive me, they have done similar work on the subject and I was listening to some of Robert Moore's audiotapes and mistyped. You are right, it was Joseph Campbell.

I really appreciate the lead to Perennial Philosophy, I will definitely look into that.

I really like that quote, thank you for taking the time to reply.

They didn't all have the same experience, but they share the monomyth, and the fact that they do despite their different journey's is very interesting. It has no relation to their different teachings, but rather the similar journeys and trials they went through. I think I did a poor job at explaining my question, I wasn't trying to imply that all traditions are the same in anyway. I agree that would lead to losing the essences of them.

You're right in that they are typically in different wheel houses, but THJ is much more than a literary device. That is why it is so fascinating. I encourage you to read Joseph Campbell's book, The Hero With A Thousand Faces to Learn more about it.
