
新たな研究結果によれば、コーヒーを飲む習慣は、2型糖尿病にかかるリスクを低減してくれるかもしれない。
ギリシアのハルコピオ大学の研究グループは、10年間に渡る調査で、毎日コーヒーを愛飲している(1日あたり1.5杯以上飲む)人たちは、時々コーヒーを飲む(1日あたり1.5杯未満)人たちに比べて、2型糖尿病にかかる確率が半分であったことを明らかにした。
研究グループは、コーヒー豆に含まれる炎症を抑制する抗酸化物質が、この結果をもたらした可能性があると考えている。被験者たちから採取された血液サンプルは、コーヒー愛飲家のほうが、炎症を引き起こす血清アミロイドの数値が低いことを示したという。
「コーヒーに含まれる抗酸化物質は有益かもしれませんが、今後さらなる調査が必要です」と、ギリシアにあるハルコピオ大学のデモステネス・B・パナギオタコス主任研究員はロイターに語った。
この調査のため、パナギオタコス博士と研究チームは、アテネに住む18歳以上の成人1300人を対象に毎日のコーヒー摂取量を調査。また酸化ストレスや炎症を調べるため血中濃度も測定した。10年後、研究チームは追跡調査を行った結果、男性の13%、女性の12%が糖尿病にかかったことが分かった。
家族の病歴や喫煙といった他のリスク因子を考慮した場合も、コーヒー愛飲家たちが2型糖尿病にかかる確率は、54%低かったことが明らかになった。
コーヒーの摂取と2型糖尿病のリスク低減との関係は、これまでにも調査が行われている。2012年に行われた研究では、1日あたり4杯以上のコーヒーを飲む人々は、糖尿病にかかる可能性が50%低く、1杯増えるごとに疾患リスクは7%近く下がるということが明らかになった。
もちろん、糖尿病のリスクを低減するためにコーヒーを飲むわけではない。本来の美味しさに加え、コーヒーはストレスをやうつ病のリスク低減のほか、EDにも効果があるともいわれている。
この研究結果は、医学専門誌『ヨーロッパ臨床栄養学』で発表された。
