Google scales the Great Firewall, falls off 105 minutes later

Citizens of mainland China unexpectedly found themselves with unfettered access to Google search late last night, commencing a golden age of censorship-free searching that lasted all of 105 minutes.
3月27日の深夜に、China 本土の人々が、Google 検索を自ら探し出し、フィルタのかかってないエンジンに、自由なアクセスするという事件が起こった。突然のことだが、検閲されないゴールデン･タイムが始まり、それは 105分間ほど続いた。
Welcome to the land where Google no longer exists.For the duration of the film Edward Scissorhands, lasting from 11:30pm on Sunday to 1:15am on Monday morning, Google’s search – but not other services like Gmail or Youtube – was unblocked, according to the South China Morning Post.
South China Morning Post によると、Edward Scissorhands という映画を彷彿させる時間帯は、日曜日の夜の 11時30分から、月曜日の朝の 1時15分まで及んだようだ。ただし、アクセスできたのは Google 検索のみであり、Gmail や YouTube などのサービスはロックされたままだったという。
This isn’t the first time that holes have appeared in China’s Great Firewall – or the first time they’ve been hastily filled in.
ただし、China Great Firewall に穴が開き、慌てて修復されたのは、初めてのことではない。
A welcome accident
When a blocked website unexpectedly slips China’s internet filter, it can usually be explained in two ways: either the Great Firewall changed, or the website did.
この、China インターネット･フィルタを、ブロックされていた Web サイトが、突然くぐり抜ける場合には、Great Firewall もしくは対象となる Web サイトに、変更が生じたと説明できる。
In July of 2014, for example, Facebook made a short-lived return to the People’s Republic – but it was only accessible in some cities, and just for a few hours. China’s censorship authorities don’t exactly post PR releases about the Great Firewall’s glitches, so it has never been clear what exactly happened.
2014年の7月のことだが、この人民の共和国に Facebook が一瞬だけ戻ってきた。しかし、いくつかの都市に限られ、また、数時間のことであった。China の検閲当局が、Great Firewall の不具合について、リリースをポストすることはないので、何が起こったのかを正確に把握することは不可能だった。
There is more evidence surrounding this most recent Google unblocking. The SCMP reports that access to Google search coincided with the company’s launch of a series of new IP servers in Asia to assist users of Google’s Vietnamese, Japanese, Indian, and other domains. The addition of these new IP servers seems to have confused China’s censorship apparatus, which did not recognize those new connections as linked to blocked services.
しかし、今回の Google に関するブロック解除には、それを示す多数の状況証拠がある。SCMP のレポートによると、Google 検索へのアクセスは、同社が Asia で新しい IP サーバ群を立ち上げ、Vietnamese／Japanese／Indian へのサービスを強化した、タイミングと一致していることになる。そして、それらの新しい IP サーバが追加されたことで、China の検閲システムに混乱が生じたようだ。つまり、それらの新しいコネクションが、すでにブロックされているサービスにリンクしていること、認識できずにいたことになる。
It only took a bit more than an hour and a half for China to bring the ban hammer down on Google’s new servers, however. In the time when the website was accessible, there was a flurry of commentary on Chinese social media, namely Weibo and WeChat.
China 当局が、Google の新しいサーバ群をブロックするまでに要した時間は、わずか 1時間から 1時間半ほどである。しかし、その時間内では、この Web サイトへのアクセスが自由であり、China のソーシャル･メディアである Weibo と WeChat にコメントの嵐が吹き荒れた。
In posts circulating on WeChat, users shared screenshots of searches via Google’s .jp domain, accompanied with messages ranging from the utilitarian “Welcome back, Google!” to the more poetic: “It came back! A great feeling, like spring flowers in full bloom.” As of writing, those posts are still on WeChat’s Moments service (akin to the Facebook timeline).
WeChat では、Google.JP ドメインを介した検索の結果が、スクリーンショットとして繰り返して共有される事態となった。そして、「Welcome back, Google!」 といった一般的なものから、「お帰り！ 満開の春の花のような、すばらしい出来事だ」といった詩的なものまで、さまざまなメッセージが添付されていた。この記事を書いている時点で、それらのポストは WeChat の Moments（Facebook のタイムラインのようなもの）に残されていた。
It doesn’t look as though Google intentionally evaded censorship here. Launching new IP servers late on a Sunday night doesn’t exactly reek of subversive activity – it seems much more like planned server maintenance that had a pretty big accidental side effect.
Google が、意図的に検閲を回避したとは思えない。日曜日の深夜に、新しい IP サーバを立ち上げることから、破壊的な活動を感じることはない。それは、計画されたサーバ･メンテナンスと判断すべきことであるが、きわめて偶発的で甚大な、副作用を有していたことになる。
But it does show that China’s Great Firewall is primarily a reactive – not a proactive – tool. All it takes is one routine IP update to poke holes in the system, and presumably force some Beijing bureaucrats and engineers to scramble into their offices on a Sunday night.
そして、この事件により、China のグレート･ファイアウォールが、能動的ではなく受動的なツールであることが明らかになった。このシステムの穴を突くために必要なのは、1つのルーチン IP アップデートだけである。日曜日の夜に、Beijing の官僚やエンジニアが、オフィスに駆けつけるという事態が、これからも起こり得るのだろう。
