If you do twitter, look up @Missingabroad which is the Lucie Blackman trust. They have a wide retweeting audience. Good Luck.

There was no news about him although I searched some local news websites.

Damn I hope you find him and that he's alive! Really sux and I can totally see how adventurers could find themselves in a situation like this.

I used to do day walks around Japan (when I lived there) and this was before phones had GPS'. I'd bring my laptop and a bluetooth GPS unit. On my laptop I'd mark the point where I started, and then use the GPS when I got lost. Even in a common walking place (my first time being 'a little lost' was at Mt Takao... second time was an Inba Marsh) you can find yourself disoriented if you walk off the track (even though the places in my example are surrounded by residential areas). On one occasion some girls were walking home from school (or... had more likely been wagging and hanging out in the forest) they took me back to their place and their parents cooked me dinner (before driving me ~20 minutes to the station). I was quite impressed because I was fuuuuuucked and in my home country the whole 'stranger danger' fear woulda meant they probably wouldn't have even talked to some 6-foot-something foreign dude. I still keep in touch with the family and the parents have stayed with me in Australia a few times.

Nikko... is a lovely place and the people are very kind. Can you share where he was walking? (Nikko has a lot of houses...etc so I'm trying to picture a place where he wouldn't be able to simply look down from a high point and see a few lights/houses). The first time I saw real snow was in Nikko (yeah, we don't really get any in Australia unless you actively seek it out) so I have some really fond memories of the place.

We went walking in Nikko once and what we thought was a stroll in the hills turned out to be a significant climb. We finally made it back to the village after walking in the dark for several hours and nearly walking off a cliff after taking the wrong route. We heard wild boar and monkeys and the track was in really bad condition, muddy and steep. I am not inexperienced in general but we did meet a US marine and together me and my wife, we made it out. Best of luck to your friend. There are several walks around Nikko and I don't think they are particularly tourist friendly especially given the information they provide at the information centre.

Similar thing happened to me. It's quite disconcerting eh? You think you're minutes from the end of your trek then you're lost in the mountains and it's getting dark :-/

In a situation like this (co-travellers), why wouldn't they both have location sharing turned on?

(If they don't both have cell phones, why not?)

In his last fb post he posted that he had been walking for an hour after the navigation app (whatever he was using) indicated it was only a 60 min journey, the remaining journey time was still 60 min, which means either he took the wrong direction or the software was bugged, and the post also indicated that he hadn't been seeing anybody for a while but reassured that he'd find his way out..

I am not sure whether he split up with the co-travelers from the beginning or got lost midway, but he hadn't returned to the hotel since then.

Also judging from his ability to post an hour into his journey I would imagine he had mobile Internet, but whatever happened to him after that post is a mystery. =(

That's not good. I would assume that there would be service throughout his journey. I really really hope that he got lost. Again, best of luck, and I hope nothing terrible has happened.

It was below freezing in the mountains and snowing and windy as hell the past couple nights in the mountains of Gunma. Do you have any more details about where he was? (Gunma is south of Nikko, probably had similar weather).

That area west of Nikko (where many people hike around lake chuzenji) is pretty high up, but in a big valley that should be pretty easy to orient yourself.

Had to post this story on a new account because I don't want some of my friends who know my account to see it since they wouldn't get it.

I hope your friend is alright. I to have a story about the lake chuzenji. I was on a quick day hike around the lake when I took one of the paths that lead me from the lake through the forest to the buss stop. This had to have been around 4 in the afternoon since I had arrived close to 1pm and hiked for a couple of hours after a quick lunch. I entered the forest around 4 and everything was super dark to the point where I had to use my phone flashlight to see the trail, why you have to understand is the forest around here is incredibly old and dense almost primordial so it wasn't weird that it was really dark I just thought that was how it was. But there was always a glowing light just down the path that I assumed was the exit out of the forest. As I walked down the path for what seemed like 50-60 mins I never seemed to get any closer and my phone soon died. No big deal I thought cause I could still see the glow of the exit. I followed along for another 30 mins or so before I felt like some thing was taking to long. As soon as I realized that this was way to far to walk the light ahead of me just disappeared. I continued down the path but every hair on my body was standing up from then on. Everyonce in a while I thought I would see a glow off to my right or left in the distance but when I looked it was only darkness. I was beginning to get worried after another 30 mins of walking because I knew it was getting late into the evening and I had been getting very cold the last few nights in nikko where I was staying. Just as I was really starting to worry something crossed the path in front of me. To this day i still am scared by the thought of it even though at the time it was the warmest feeling. It looked like a small pure white fox that almost glowed, with 3 tails and small stag horns. It ventured on to the path stopped looked at me then pointed into head in the direction I was walking before running off into the thick roots on the surrounding trees. Oddly at peace at the time I continued on, not but 2 minuets later I exited the forest and was surprised at how light it was still. I could have sworn it should be dark by then. It wasn't until I got to the ramen shop I ate at earlier in the day that I realized it want the same day but instead it had been nearly 40 hours since I entered the forest and the chef was suppressed to see me back. I couldn't shake a weird feeling for the rest of my trip and ended up heading back to South Africa a week earlier than planned. This was in the late 90's and since then I have moved to America and experienced some odd things, but I cannot bring myself to travel back to Japan.
