Way to hold on Colorado

[–]ASpoonfulOfAwesome 82 points83 points  (16 children)

We do our best. Harder and harder now what with the marijuanas and the munchies and such.

[–]CarbonNightmare 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Man, I went to Denver (from Australia) because weed and Snowboarding. I've been to a lot of 'touristy' cities in the US: NY, LA, Miami, Honolulu, Vegas, San Fran... but Denver was the first place I could say I fell in love with. All the locals were like "Man this massive influx of people is really killing us!" And I was all "Fuck you... I wanna climb up every mountain and snowboard down it. I wanna drink at your bars every night, and eat at your restaurants every day. I wanna live here." They were all "Silly Aussie, we'll always have space for you." My Airbnb host even bought an Australian flag to fly out the front of his house while I stayed there. I loved it.

But for reals, Colorado is beautiful and can just make you want to be somebody.

[–]Kalivha 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Someone I know did a postdoc in Boulder and pretty much implied his commute involved hiking. Not sure if he was serious or not.

[–]Rude_Narwhal 25 points26 points  (5 children)

Sativa + morning hike.

I loved Colorado

[–]MajorSamsquamch 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I'm a Canadian citizen, never been to Colorado, only traveled as far south as North Carolina and as far west as Ohio. However, I can honestly say I love Colorado. Just based on everything I've ever seen about it. I would live there if I were to suddenly pack up and move to the US.

[–]ASpoonfulOfAwesome 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I'm predictably biased as I was born here, but I've travelled quite a bit, including a four year backpacking stint through Asia and Europe and I have yet to find a place I like better. CO just hits on everything I want, from outdoor activity, fresh air, cool weather, beautiful scenery, (mostly) decent people. Even the traffic is comparably manageable. Granted an ocean would be nice but we're pretty damn near perfect IMO.

Sorry, that's coming off a lot more conceited than I'd planned but I really love my state.

Aside from the flesh-eating Crotch Goblins, of course. Not sure really how they choose their victims but they really seem to hate transplants. I mean, definitely come visit and hang out for a bit, but you probably shouldn't stay long term. Trust me, you don't want to fall victim to a Crotch Goblin. No sir.

[–]BipolarBear0Personal responsibility is hard 3 points4 points  (1 child)

With all the construction they're doing on I-25, traffic is no longer manageable.

[–]bullet4mv92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amazing how the fat gene has evolved more quickly in certain geographies. /s

[–]chintzy 188 points189 points  (80 children)

OK I really don't want to sound racist but obesity is more prevalent among black and Hispanic communities.

Here is a neat source

Take a look at black women specifically - nearly 60 percent obese. Over 80 percent of black women are either overweight or obese.

[–]Slizzard_73 230 points231 points  (18 children)

There's nothing racist about stating facts. It's what you say after the facts that defines you.

[–]thisbaseball17 108 points109 points  (15 children)

Or more accurately, how you interpret those facts.

It's not racist to say "X% of violent crimes in America are committed by black people."

It's racist to say "X% of violent crimes in America are committed by black people because being black makes them inherently more prone to violence," because there is no data backing that skin color is linked to tendency towards violent behavior. Racism is a rejection of the scientific method.

[–]_pulsar 37 points38 points  (6 children)

On many parts if Reddit the first example will get you banned and deemed a racist. But yes I agree with you.

[–]thijsje656 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Yeah but to be honest it is Reddit we're talking about, anything you say can get you any kind of banned. Shadowbanned, banned from a sub, banned from all the subs one moderator moderates because he got extremely frustrated with your single comment, we all know the stories.

[–]aceshighsays 3 points4 points  (2 children)

In 2 years of membership, I wonder how many people are in good standing with all of reddit (ie: not get banned at all). I never say anything radical, but I do find myself getting banned from a few reddit subs and other websites (facebook, aol). I wonder what those numbers are after 5 years of membership and after 10 years of membership.

[–]radleft 2 points3 points  (1 child)

5yrs + & no bans.

Moderator (totally inactive) on 9 subs.

[–]Hara-Kiri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what order the fact is put in. If the fact is put to support a previous racist comment then it's fair to assume it's by someone racist.

[–]Slizzard_73 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I gotcha.

[–]ch4os1337 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The issue now is people projecting. They think that people who say your first quote mean the second quote. How do we get people to take us at face value?

[–]BadGoyWithAGun 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But some people also treat the facts alone, without interpretation, as racist.

For example, I don't particularly care what the causes of black crime are - I don't need to do so to know that statistically, I should feel less safe around random black people than random people I can visually identify with. This is true regardless of what the underlying cause of criminality might be. A lot of people seem to consider this basic inference alone to be racist, as if I'm required to forget the concept of conditional probability (and/or my survival instinct) to remain "politically correct".

[–]canteloupy 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Also, nowadays, who needs race when you can get haplogroups or even genotyping?

[–]Kandierter_Holzapfel 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You cannot see haplogroups

[–]canteloupy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it's handy to be able to casually discriminate people you meet, but how useful is that really when you're discussing health statistics? Even in common health practice, it's soon going to be routine to genotype disease variants in patients.

[–]ampason 61 points62 points  (1 child)

This article on that site explains quite well why we see racial distinctions in the rate of obesity. It isn't down to genetic variation.

[–]chintzy 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean to imply it was due to genetics, although re-reading the comment I replied to I can see how it might look like I did.

The source you posted (same website as mine) gives a great overview for why the disparity exists.

[–]jollyshitlordShitlording with a wild eyed grin 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Food is the most basic, available and cheapest form of entertainment/comfort so there is a big correlation with being socially fucked and obesity, also a big correlation with broken societies and obesity rates (why yes I'm Eurotrash how did you guess? )

[–]willmaster123 17 points18 points  (5 children)

Black and Hispanic communities haven't grown THAT much since the 70s though. People tend to overestimate how many minorities are in America, it's something like 68-70% white.

[–]chintzy 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Right, black folks are around 12 percent of the national population but the states that have the highest obesity tend to have a higher black population. Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia are all over 30 percent black wiki sauce

That's more poverty than anything.

[–]newguyeverytime 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Poorest places in the nation are white though.

[–]canteloupy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And they're fat too.

[–]Serviu 35 points36 points  (7 children)

It's more prevalent due to socioeconomic disparity, not race.

[–]chintzy 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Hmm, I did a cursory investigation into your claim but much of what I'm finding is saying poverty doesn't always correlate to obesity like you might think.

Do you have a source?

[–]Serviu 16 points17 points  (3 children)

[–]chintzy 11 points12 points  (2 children)

So taking a look at these sources, what they are saying is that in developing countries obesity becomes a problem due to changes in activity levels and diet, and that countries with high income inequality have more obesity.

It still doesn't answer the question of why- in the United States - there is such a disparity between the obesity rates of white people and black people. I'm not buying that it's just because a higher percentage of black people are poor than white people because the disparity is too great to be explained by that reason alone. I'm still not finding anything that answers that question but I'm sure social scientists have looked at it before.

[–]Serviu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's actually very accurate. It's like saying black men commit crimes more than white men and leaving it at that without factoring in history, socioeconomic status, segregation, and a myriad of factors.

The last source I will link you to, while specifically talking about women, clearly shows that socioeconomic status increases likelihood of obesity. If an overwhelmingly amount of people of a race are poor ( http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/12/12/racial-wealth-gaps-great-recession/) then of course they're going to have a higher rate of obesity. I understand it's in part culture and other factors do have an influence but a huge factor is income.

"The idea that food insecurity increases the risk of obesity may seem counterintuitive, but the present study is at least the third to confirm this association. In our study, NHW women who were food insecure without hunger were 36% more likely to be obese than food secure NHW women; women of other race/ethnicities reporting food insecurity without and with hunger had 1.5 and 2.8 times the risk of obesity, respectively, compared to their food secure counterparts. The studies of Olson and Townsend also found intermediate levels of food insecurity to be positively associated with risk for obesity or overweight (3,12). Olson categorized household food insecu- rity according to the Radimer/Cornell measure and found that mean BMI and prevalence of obesity (BMI 􏰃 29 kg/m2) were greater for women from food insecure households compared to women from food secure households. Townsend categorized household food insecurity (mild, moderate or severe) using the USDA food sufficiency indicator, and found that women from households with mild food insecurity were 30% more likely than food secure women to be overweight (BMI 􏰇 27.3 kg/m2)."

    [–]Hitlerdinger 5 points6 points  (3 children)

    what was it?

    [–]elzeardclym 12 points13 points  (2 children)

A fat girl jumping in the air and landing in the splits and then twerking. And then another girl jumps over someone's head doing the same thing, only doesn't make it over them, and lands on them really hard. The person appears to be unconscious (at the least).

    [–]uberfission 1 point2 points  (1 child)

We don't post pictures of people just being fat. There has to be some fatlogic to go with it. Fatlogic coming from the person involved is what we're looking for.

    But wanna know something ?

It seems black people have a less tendency to be fat . I mean most of the young black people I see are athletic . And don't get me started on the ones I train at the gym . They seem to have very good genetics when it comes to lose fat and gain muscle .

I live in Europe and its uncommon to see fat black people .

Sometimes I wish I was black so I could get that leanness I train so hard to achieve ...teheh.

    [–]OfficialKimJongFun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not racist. It's just the facts.

    [–]James_Locke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are more black women obese than overweight? Thats a pretty crazy skew, you would think that it would be more of a bell curve but whoa...

    [–]kersey79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more of a poverty / less access to education issue which is over represented by minorities especially in the still very-segregated bible belt.

    [–]ericchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only that, but blacks at a similar BMI to an otherwise equivalent white person are also at higher risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and dyslipidemia.

    [–]kvnyay 23 points24 points  (20 children)

Its the government. Lol sounds like some conspiracy theory when I say it like that but places like Aurora and Denver pretty much dump money into parks and recreational areas here. The entire mindset is different here too. If you see someone jogging here nobody will bat an eye but in Mississippi I'm assuming it would look out of place.

    [–]LIPCSB__ 10 points11 points  (7 children)

in Mississippi I'm assuming it would look out of place.

I lived in Alabama this past summer, and I will say that I can't recall anyone else riding a bicycle to Walmart for their shopping or into town for recreational purposes.

    [–]nanninga 6 points7 points  (5 children)

I think driving everywhere has become so common that carrying groceries is pretty unusual. I get a bunch of weird looks when i load up my backpack with groceries and carry 3 bags on each arm. Even the more poor people that dont have cars like me usually pay for a cab

    [–]acydetchx 5 points6 points  (4 children)

In suburbs and rural areas driving is pretty much a necessity. In cities it's much more commonplace to see people walking around to do errands instead of driving. Where I live it would be odd for someone to take a car shopping unless they were getting a ton of stuff and actually people usually do smaller shopping trips so they can carry stuff, rather than getting a month's worth of food at once.

    [–]Antisera 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yep, and where I live it would be crazy to walk to the store because it's so far away. According to Google, the nearest store is a 4.5 hour walk from here.

    [–]acydetchx 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Whoa, how long of a drive does that turn out to be?

    [–]nanninga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my local grocery store is about 5 or 6 blocks away and i always walk . Usually do 2 or 3 trips per month.i dont usually see anyone walking with more than one grocery bag

[–]UCgirlCries in planes, trains, and automobiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    [–]oxfordcircumstances 11 points12 points  (5 children)

No, silly. I imagine that Colorado is a locational confirmation bias. Healthy people move there. Mississippi is a backwater. People run, swim and cycle in mississippi, but not in the same concentration as a playground state.

    [–]TheSourTruth 7 points8 points  (4 children)

You guys may both be correct, but you're missing the biggest thing: the altitude. People living at higher altitudes weigh less, all things considered.

[–]UCgirlCries in planes, trains, and automobiles 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Why? I'm not trying to call bullshit or anything, I'm honestly curious about the reasons.

    [–]sjogga90[🍰] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

The farther away you get from earth, the lower its gravity affecting you will be. This is why astronauts weigh nothing in space.

    [–]ohlucency 27 points28 points  (6 children)

my landlord in Hawaii is mega obese. had heart surgery - no change in his eating habits. he got told he had at best, a decade left (he's only 60) so he decided to start walking. 4 miles a day, with a stop at zippy's bakery for two big ole apple turnovers and sometimes a slice of pie (easy 600-1000 calories). "i dont know why i cant lose weight!" he says, as he eats a family-sized-salad-bowl full of white rice. ugh. dude, lay off the kalbi, lay off the white rice! you gonna die!

[–]CosmicVomitbut muh cundishuns 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ahh man. Can't say he wasn't warned tho.

[–]UCgirlCries in planes, trains, and automobiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. I just feel bad for people who are trying and just don't have the knowledge (or will to see the truth) to understand what's going wrong.

    [–]nanninga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His life expectany could be your length of stay in that residence. If you like it there better hope he changes his health

    [–]thor767 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lol he burns 400~ calories via walking 4 miles then proceeds to just nullify it and THEN SOME.

[–]frogflavoredlost fatlogic and 25 lbs 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Plate lunches and bentos are getting bigger and bigger.

[–]CosmicVomitbut muh cundishuns 14 points15 points  (5 children)

    Not to mention spam everything.

Spam musubi, spam teriyaki burgers, loco moco with spam....

    [–]naoww 6 points7 points  (2 children)

A spam musubi is not going to make you fat, wtf? It's like 300 calories max. Maybe 375 with sauce and an egg. It baffles me that someone who say that a SPAM MUSUBI is causing obesity.

[–]CosmicVomitbut muh cundishuns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I said spam in general. That shit can be mega bad for you.

    [–]Magnum007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sodium content must be through the roof.

[–]UCgirlCries in planes, trains, and automobiles 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Every time read about Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders use of spam, it makes me want to go out and try some recipes.

[–]CosmicVomitbut muh cundishuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's quite a few! You could definitely try. Most of them are pretty simple

    [–]nanninga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read on some bs blog about this fat girl who was trying to lose weight and was warning everyone about kfc 12 piece family feasts that her and her boyfriend split.. Yeah the calorie count is ridiculous at roughly 5 and a half thousand calories but up at my local kfc (not sure what it says elsewhere ) it is posted as serving 6. I had half a 12 piece family feast today for my cheat day but if you served it to 6 people its around 900 calories making it not so outrageous in comparison to other fast food. People just dont seem to know their serving sizes well enough.

    [–]UncleGeorge 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Big folks... let's call them what they are, morbidly obese individual, stop sugar coating it they might eat it.

    [–]naoww 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hawaii is either has the second lowest or lowest rates of obesity in the country.

    [–]TheEternalThrowaway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually I think a lot of the obesity in Hawaii is because of genetics. Native Pacific islanders are usually very big and that's been the case for a while. That's not to say that all the obese people in Hawaii are like that because of genetics, but I'm sure that many are.

    [–]UncleGeorge 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ouuuh I love Pandemic... Oh wait.. this isn't r/games... read title well that's depressing..

    [–]I_EAT_GUSHERSall about that treble 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Anybody have it in non-gif (i.e. separate for each year) form?

    [–]Shadesbane43 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Download it. You should be able to view it frame-by-frame.

    [–]Rycht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gif explode can do that for you. You just have to change the extension from .gifv to .gif.

    [–]pahdumpadump 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I have heard that the big spike in obesity rates at the beginning of this map only really occurred due to a sudden shift in the classification of overweight, and that the BMI of 25+ wasn't used until that time and accounted for much of the spike alone, regardless of the weight of the populace.

Not denying the high rates, but is there any truth to this? Did the new classification account for much of the shift at all? Does anyone know?

    [–]iserane 11 points12 points  (2 children)

The change was in 1998 from 27.8 to 25 for the overweight cutoff, which reclassified ~30 million people.

Oddly enough, at least back to 1990 (using 25bmi as a cutoff) the proportion of people classified as overweight has remained almost constant that entire time.

    [–]cloverbunny 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can you explain the proportion part like I'm 5? The BMI shift is my dad's go to excuse about his weight (even though he is not close to 27.8, let alone 25).

    [–]Rufus_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roughly speaking, for every person that goes from "normal" BMI to "overweight", someone else goes from "overweight" to "obese". It has nothing to do with the overweight cutoff shift.

    [–]OozingCrotchSmegma69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

    This is depressing :(

    [–]tempestorion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The overweight/obese rate for my area (Hampton Roads, VA) is 64%. This area is rife with military veterans who get out and get fat, and I say this as a veteran myself. It's insanity.

    [–]brittanyjax 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Just for slightly more recent data, as of 2013, no state had less than 20% obesity, 18 states were between 30-35%, and two states were >35%! Way to go West Virginia and Mississippi! CDC source with more charts.

[–]UCgirlCries in planes, trains, and automobiles 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Did you hear of that show about a chef who tried to change the school lunch menus in Charleston, WV? I think it was Jamie Oliver? And he can actually cook. I believe everyone revolted.

[–]GlitteryStarI'm breaking out, I'm flying higher than a pig in space 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Loved that show! Yes, despite being told the young children were pre-diabetic (they were huge, eating fast food and drinking soda non-stop) they made no changes at all. He's got some new initiative along similar lines. He's the one who ground up chicken bones and skin and fat to make slime in front of the kids, and when he asked who wanted to eat the nuggets made from it, they all raised their hands. Barf - inducing moment.

    [–]brittanyjax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do remember that! I think I remember ultimately the school board saying something like it was too expensive to implement his changes on a larger scale (ha) despite Oliver showing that it cost the same as the prepackaged stuff they were buying from contractors.

    [–]talking_muffin 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Self-reported obesity? Didn't we have a conversation in this sub recently about how we can't trust people to correctly self report their weight? Unless I am misunderstanding the title of that data, I wouldn't trust it to be accurate.

    [–]brittanyjax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree, and these data are probably skewed way lower than actual rates. Given that it's the CDC, however, they're probably as accurate and comprehensive as we've got to compare the older data to.

    [–]SUBARU17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    At first I was rooting for my state staying low, and then the colors changed quickly towards he end. ;_;

    [–]ijustwantanfingname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

America needs another notch in its bible belt.

    [–]theGuatemalanYMCA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

look at all those genetics.. so many healthy people

    [–]conspiracy_thug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    It's all those nascar states

    [–]Downvotes_All_Dogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"OMG, obesity is the new (overdiagnosed) ADD!!" - My old friend's cousin.

    [–]pmckizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    That's fucking depressing

    [–]roronoapedro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My General Psychology professor showed a slideshow version of this when he was explaining eating disorders. It was pretty interesting, nice to see it again.

    [–]stitch87 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What happened to Hawaii in 2004?

    [–]LoLlYdEI'm a Silly People 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Food. Lots of it.

    [–]LeBirdyGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm scared. I wish that there was just a simple way to avoid obesity... sips mocha frappuccino

    [–]mcavvacm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it's genetics that suddenly kicked in 20 to 30 years ago for an entire nation! S/

    [–]EXCESSIVE_DOOM 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Obesity isn't an epidemic because it isn't an infectious disease.

You can't "catch" obesity, to get obese, you have to be either stupid or ignorant.

    [–]Rufus_Reddit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Some definitions of epidemic don't require it to be a disease or infectious. (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/epidemic)

    [–]Raleighirishman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing a infographic similar to this where there was also a correlation to religion, and education too. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

    [–]Bartleby1955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    .....it's a lifestyle choice

    [–]knytrix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I encourage fat people to eat as much as they can.

    [–]sunnyandtony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a pandemic, not epidemic...

    [–]NotRAClST2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    high fucktose corn syrup

    [–]prefontaine250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sad to see a country fall like that

    [–]Grammaton485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to say that to be fair to Texas, most of the obesity is located here in Houston.

    [–]Sworn_to_Ganondorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in socal I went to go see straight out of compton and the majority of people just in line or around were overweight. It was very noticable and really sad to witness really hit me, like damn it is an epidemic.

    [–]barcley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the bible belt can't use the factory notches anymore.
