Most anime is complete garbage and deserves its hate with good reason. Out of 135 that I've seen, I would only recommend 7 of them, and that calculates to an astounding 5%. Now that may all sound really harsh, but after watching anime every day for three years I've grown to dislike it. A lot.

 What the hell?
 What the hell?

The most major and significant stain on anime is the cutesy "kawaii" plague. Girls with giant eyes, hair of odd colours such as pink or purple, nonexistent mouths and noses, short skirts and school uniforms, tired and contrived quirks that are supposed to be cute (but usually just annoying), you name it! My heart just melts when these characters make nonsense baby sounds (uuuu, auuuuuu), turn out to be horrible cooks (so cute!), or are super shy about their flat chest and comically beat up anybody that mentions it (hilarious!). There are also entire series of girls being cute and silly, and people absolutely love it. Now let me ask, why do people like this? WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS? These characters don't exist. They were created by a bunch of old dudes trying to cash in on cheap emotions. They will not come to life and become your girlfriend. Stop obsessing over them!

And beyond all the cutesy crap, a lot of anime just sucks. A good share of highly rated anime is bombarded with cliches and tropes,
 Dude, it's like... so deep.
 Dude, it's like... so deep.
but people consider them to be masterpieces anyways (I'm looking at you, Code Geass). I really wonder what these people have watched or read in their lives if they consider stuff like this amazing. But even worse are shows that try desperately hard to be deep and compelling, but end up falling right on their ass. I've seen plenty of people label Elfen Lied as deep and mature, and oh god. Tits and gore do not make something profound. Why do people make these shows out as so much greater than they actually are? There's nothing wrong with just being in it for the entertainment, but please don't call stuff like this things such as "masterpiece, amazing, deep, brilliant". They're not.

But the worst part of anime are the frequent cliches. While other mediums have a sizable amount of them as well, anime by far has
If I were colourblind, I wouldn't be able to tell these characters apart.
If I were colourblind, I wouldn't be able to tell these characters apart.
the most. They are everywhere! Characters have zero originality as they're just cut and paste archetypes found in dozens of other anime. There's the bitchy girl that freaks out at everybody but ends up acting all cute and shy around her love interest, the intelligent dude that's always pushing in his foggy glasses, the extremely noisy and hyperactive girl, the jaded protagonist that sighs at everything, the whiny and useless character that fell  right out of a JRPG, the retarded airhead girl that the audience is supposed to find cute, the blank and emotionless character that rarely speaks, and on and on. And even worse still, is that EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER LOOKS THE SAME. Almost every male character has the same hairstyle, and sometimes the only way you can tell characters apart is by their hair colour. Girls aren't much better, either. Throw on some stockings and add a gigantic hair ribbon and you're good to go. Of course it's not only the characters themselves, but the plot (if one exists) is often so full of cliches that most often I'm thinking about where I've seen things before more than I'm paying attention to the show itself.

I guess this makes it sound like I hate all anime, but I don't. There are some shows that I've enjoyed and would recommend to anybody, but they're just so flooded by crap that I can't be bothered with this medium anymore. After finishing up Battlestar Galactica and starting on Twin Peaks and Deadwood, I'm not missing anime at all.  I've been forcing myself to continue watching and keep up with anime for quite a while now, but I think I'm done with the masochism. I would rather spend my time on other, better things.

So for the people that think anime is for jerks, you're not entirely wrong. It's a bad medium with a couple decent series hidden here and there, but more than often you'll just be swimming through the crap that permeates it.

That's quite a passionate argument, but umm.... 95% of EVERYTHING sucks. Watch much American TV lately? Listen to much music? How many video games are released every year and how many do we actually buy and/or enjoy playing?

Meh, I'm not going to address anything you specifically said because it's the same regurgitated hairball of an argument that many others have already said. People start getting annoyed by something and it grows into a disgusting mess of chewed up and spat out arguments made by countless people before. They all look the same! There's too much moe! It's all crap! Blah blah blah blah.

Edit: Oh and using Clannad as your "What the hell?" picture...? You haven't seen After Story, have you?

Dude you have some pretty high standards. And if you haven't realized EVERYTHING is plagued with cliches, having cliche's doesn't mean something sucks.

FPS games are plagued with steroid junkie space marines kicking alien ass.
Theatres are plagued with action movies filled with 2d character profiles and neo wannabe protagonist.
Jrpgs are plagued with spiky haired emo teens saving the world
And MMOs are plagued with elves, warriors and months of killing kobolds.
WRPGs are always plagued with some assholes searching for some lost artifact that is the key to defeating some ancient evil.

Does that mean any of the genres I mentioned sucks? No! Get off your high horse and start enjoying things for what it is rather than being a douch-bag that picks apart every little detail in an anime and missing the whole point of the story.

Yup Code Geass is practically the anime that turned me off from anime as well.

I can't believe it's fucking popular and winning rewards and such when it's absolutely garbage,

I'd rather watch the TV version of Escaflowne if I wanted weird people drama mixed with mechs. At least that show wasn't pandering to the crowd.

gosh to think a medium would be flooded with 90% crud?? there's alot of directors that make shit for money, japan is stupid for paying any attention to it and therefore make the shitmakers make more shit. You enjoy something for the best it has to offer, the amount of awful films that come out every year, awful music and TV, but they don't spoil your enjoyment of the GOOD stuff that comes out.. even if it's 99% shite, if that has any effect of your enjoyment of the good stuff i'd say you just care way too much about the reputation of the medium.

don't tell me you just don't like it anymore because it's cool not to like it on these forums?

I wouldn't completely give up. Check out House of Five Leaves, I've heard it's similar art-wise and in tone to Mushishi. I'm really enjoying it, watchable on Hulu 8 hrs after it airs in Japan.

It's just harder too find quality stuff than like 5 years ago. I think the OP wouldn't mind a brand spankin new anime that's good.

It's just a pain to swim through the pile of crap to find that hidden gem.

Though honestly why look for new stuff when there's old stuff that the OP probably missed and should watch huh?

Just... what? Typical anime characters? If you're so turned off by the style why would you subject yourself to 135 shows? O.o It's not like the style has changed all that much over time. Saber Marionette J, Slayers, Macross, Bubblegum Crisis and all the old late 80s / early 90s series shared a lot of the same design choices.

@animateria: gurren lagann came out pretty recently, that was hot. Game Mind came out and that was like nothing i'd seen before. The Girl who lept through time was something a little different. I mean, i don't know my anime too well but i look at review sites and they tell me what's new and not generic.

The new hajime no ippo series comes out in the summer, and if you can't look forward that i don't know what to say! :o

I've always fucking hated anime. But I was willing to change about a year ago. I needed something to watch while playing WoW, and I remember my roommate telling me how awesome Dragon Ball Z is, so I downloaded it. All of it. I watched the first episode, it was terrible. I said "This is dumb, now I remember why I hate anime." and deleted the 150GB folder.

@Hourai:  May I begin with Sturgeon's Law, where at minimum 90% of any given subject is garbage? You yourself have admitted in the OP that not all of it is bad.

But in all seriousness: are you certain that you're done with anime? You're absolutely sure? Have you tried some of the Gundam stuff (of which I'd recommend Wing and G)? Magical Lyrical Girl Nanoha (starts off a typical magic girl anime, gets exponentially more awesome the longer it goes)? Subbed versions of anime that appeared on Toonami?

As said previously- everything can be considered cliche because someone else did it first. It's merely the matter of finding a new way to present it or to subvert it.

  @Hourai:

I sorta agree, but, its really most modern Anime which blows.

If you want the good stuff, go to a forum with Anime Nerds who have taste and ask for recommendations.  Though I'd say you should just read manga, much less fanservice and ussualy better paced then Anime(which I have grown to dislike)

Here I'll give you one of my favourites: Monster by Urasawa(both an Anime and a Manga). Its a really good psychological thriller, one of my faves. Ever watched Cowboy Bebop? that's a great one for over-the-top action.

EDIT: ah I see you've read Monster when I clicked on the yellow stuff. Good man.

You sound like a smart guy, downloading 150 gigs (of something you can stream online) before watching a single episode. Anime lost a rogue scholar with you.

I have become pretty jaded by a lot of what is around at the minute, Angel Beats for instance is utter rubbish.  But there are real gems still about and as Symphony pointed out there is just as much junk on TV etc..
Bakemonogatari is a good example of something worth watching from last year  and The house of five leaves  from this season seems to be really original in art and execution and that gives me hope that  I will once again adore anime again as I have in the past. Code Geass is what it is... I never saw it as anything more than stupidly, stupid robots and high drama fun, I dont think it ever pretended to be deep or clever.

I can't stand that style at all, but not everything I've seen looks like that. For example, Monster, Planetes, and Ghost in the Shell look pretty realistic without the enormous eyes and such. I don't hate how anime looks entirely, but I definitely prefer the more realistic approach instead of characters looking like aliens.

The cultural homogeny is so distinct that western people segregate it. Kind of like their RPGs. Separate but equal and all that.

I guess I'll have a serious opinion now.

There is nothing wrong with anime, there is something wrong with YOU. Thats like me going out and buying 12 FPS in a month and saying
"All video games play the same, its just guns and blood!!!".
Seriously, there are better shows out there that don't even have anything you mentioned.

Mushishi is one of my favorite shows. Its basically a collection of really well told short stories. No panty shots. No overly cute girls.
Death Note, like I mentioned, is a great show featuring nothing you had.
School Rumble is a show about a bunch of high school girls, but has NOTHING you mentioned.
 ANYTHING BY HAYAO MIYAZAKI

Why don't you research the plots of shows before you just assume that all anime is the same.

I've seen Gundam, but not the ones you've mentioned. I tried out Gundam Seed and thought it was terrible, but I found the recent 00 one to be decent.

I also watched the first two seasons of Nanoha, but I didn't enjoy most of it a whole lot. It got pretty good near the end of the second season though. I heard the third season is trash, so I've just been avoiding it.

It sounds like you need to do more research before taking the dip with an anime.  I think i've only watched around 10 or so series in total and the only stinker I found was Full Metal Panic. Code Geass was pretty fun even with it's completely ridiculous plot twists and turns.

Maybe we can help  the OP? what type of anime are you looking for?

Shonen Action manga: One piece(love the art for this one)
Stupid ridicoulous robot fights:Gurren Lagann
Serious style story: Sanctuary (I think you'll like this one based on the ones you posted in the OP)
ETC.

Anime is certainly cliched, but that's because it needs to be. The people who watch anime love the "cute" characters and trite storylines. That's why anime/manga is its own genre when it comes to film/TV/comic books. That said, you can say the same thing about anything. Comic books based on superheroes tend to be similar to each other, for example. Animated films from Pixar and DreamWorks also tend to have the same humor, character archetypes, and themes.

I don't like anime, but I don't have a problem with it. The 27-year-old men who dress up like cat people creep me out, though.

Watch Memories by Katsuhiro Otomo, which has Magnetic Rose, Stink Bomb and Cannon Fodder in it,  three really original, short anime films.

Here's a bit from 'Cannon fodder'

Yep, I find manga is a lot better than anime. While there's some garbage in there too, there's actually a surprising amount of good in there. Vagabond, Vinland Saga, Berserk, and 20th Century Boys are amazing. I also enjoyed One Piece a bit but stopped reading somewhere around 150-200 chapters in.

Well, duh.

The reason everything is cliche.....is because every conceivable storyline or idea has already been done.

The trouble is figuring out what's good and what's not. Plenty of times I've read about some promising anime but ended up disappointed when I actually got around to watching it.

If you like 20th century boys and Monster I recommend you read up on  other   Urasawa works. Try ''Pluto'' and ''Billy Bat''(ongoing) both are really interesting. I previously mentioned this, but, Sanctuary has that kinda vibe to.

As for the bolded, let me guess:

Skypia arc, huh? the one where they got on that dumb island in the sky? One Piece fans generally consider that to be the worst arc by far, I almost dropped it there and then decided to completly skip it and just read a summary.

If that's what killed the Manga for you: I recommend you go back and just skip past it. So far nothing in Skypia has ever come up again in the story and the arc after it is the best in the manga.

But most anime is pretentious and exploitative at the same time. "
