First time here? Welcome! You ask questions; we provide answers. A great resource to check before you ask a question is the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. You may also want to check our list of frequently asked questions to see if your question has already been answered.
Don't be afraid if you think your question is too simple. AskPhilosophy defines itself less by the sort of questions that are accepted than by the sort of answers they can expect to receive. Feel free to ask about topics you're studying in school, but please read about how to avoid plagiarism first.
Want to be a panelist? Have questions about what that means? Start here.
If you plan to comment regularly, you must request flair. Comments (not questions) posted by users without flair will be looked on with suspicion.
We actively moderate the quality of comments to this subreddit. We require that especially top-level responses to questions show familiarity with the question, and ideally that they make reference to the existing literature on that topic.

I have no doubt that writing a really good paper will get you into a good journal, but the implication that the stuff in journals and the stuff peer reviewed is "good" is hilarious. It's all fucking shit that is produced more out economic necessity than out of some fundamental philosophical breakdown that's needing to be substantially repaired. It's garbage! They're a bunch of school teachers, not good philosophers. Have some standards for godssake.

We may be using different criteria to evaluate goodness.

I mean world-historic, what do you mean?
[–]willbellphil. of science 5 points6 points7 points  (2 children)
Why should that be our criteria? Not every scientific paper is world-historic.

That philosophy and the natural sciences are different isn't even a thesis that should have to be argued for amongst those proclaiming to be in the know. Of course scientific papers need not be world-historic in order to contribute -- every mechanical detail is fantastically important in the world of objects, which is its field of study. But philosophy's subject matter is self-consciousness, which is not an object. Those who treat it like an object are bound to the world of breaking things down into smaller and smaller specialized parts that do not talk to one another, i.e. not worrying about being world-historic anymore. And so, yes, what's been left behind by 20th century academic philosophy is mostly clutter that gets in the way, an anti-contribution that is fueled more by economic terror than genuine, synthetic thinking.

You don't think there are details in philosophy?
