  1. Submissions must be verifiable. Please link directly to a reliable source that supports every claim in your post title. Images alone do not count as valid references. Videos are fine so long as they come from reputable sources (e.g. BBC, Discovery, etc).
  2. No personal opinions, anecdotes or subjective statements (e.g "TIL xyz is a great movie").
  3. No news or recent sources. News and any sources (blog, article, press release, video, etc.) more recent than two months are not allowed.
  4. No submissions regarding or related to the following
    1. Recent politics/politicians or police misconduct
    2. Inflammatory submissions relating to religion/race/gender

    4. "TIL about ..." and other broad posts don't belong on TIL. Try /r/Wikipedia, etc. instead, or be more specific (and avoid the word "about").
    5. "TIL how to ..." posts belong on /r/HowTo.

Apparently that happens more than coincidentally although we don't yet know what the mechanism is.
Also uncertain: how TRP has reacted to this... do they need to change the name of the subreddit now?
[–]FX114Works for the NSA 34 points35 points36 points  (7 children)
It is certainly ironic that their movement is named after the seminal film of a pair of trangender feminists.
[–]Extramrdo 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
Heh, semenal.
[–]Jay_the_gustus -2 points-1 points0 points  (0 children)
Do they even give other humans the needed respect to find that ironic?

It's not a movement. It's about waking up.
[–]evileddy comment score below threshold-24 points-23 points-22 points  (1 child)
And you will definitely be doing a lot of that if you don't wake up.

They took the rainbow pill.
[–]OmegaX123 comment score below threshold-12 points-11 points-10 points  (5 children)
There's a difference between trans and gay...
[–]mrdoubleq 8 points9 points10 points  (4 children)
You're not wrong. But the rainbow tho...
The rainbow flag, commonly the gay pride flag and LGBT pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements. (Other uses of rainbow flags include a symbol of peace.) The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights marches. It originated in Northern California, but is now used worldwide.

[–]OmegaX123 comment score below threshold-23 points-22 points-21 points  (3 children)
I'm aware, but most people aren't (they associate 'rainbow' with 'gay' exclusively), so I took a stab with about an 85% chance of hitting the mark.
EDIT: Because of this, from your own quote:
the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride
EDIT: Whoever's downvoting me, I assume you think I'm just trying to save face and 'lying' about being aware of the real meaning of the rainbow flag. I dated a trans/agender/genderfluid biologically-female person briefly just last year or so, and have friends and acquaintances on all parts of the gender spectrum, so yeah, I'm certainly familiar with the symbolism.
[–]Janus96Approx 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
And even if you weren't aware - who cares? I don't sense hostile ignorance in your comment so I don't see why u/mrdoubleq reacted all passive aggressive.

You're wrong and you're a dick.
Don't slip in that puddle of gender fluid over there.

So other LGBT people just don't get to use it because it's primarily associated with gay pride?

[–]awesomemanftw 6 points7 points8 points  (2 children)
This is true but I think it's phrased as brothers under the assumption that most people aren't going to know the information presented in the second half of the sentence.
[–]OmegaX123 comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points  (1 child)
Just about everyone knows Larry is now Lana, so most people know 'brothers' isn't accurate anymore. The only thing that's not common knowledge is that Andy is now Lily.

This bugs me. They can transition to females if they want. They have that right and I support it 100%. However, I don't have to call them sisters. I hate when people correct that. Caitlyn Jenner is still a dude, doesn't matter how he identifies.
[–]awesomemanftw 20 points21 points22 points  (0 children)
So you don't support it 100%. You support it in so far as it doesn't inconvenience you.
[–]mrchimney 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
There are lots of things that don't make sense to me. That doesn't mean it bugs me though.
[–]vaclavhavelsmustache 2 points3 points4 points  (2 children)
You don't have to call anyone anything. For example, I can call you Shitstain if I want and not be breaking any laws. It's just a matter of respecting what someone wishes to be called. If you can't do that, that's fine, but we're also free to think you're an asshole for it. Marketplace of ideas and whatnot.
[–]rahtin [score hidden]  (1 child)

[–]vaclavhavelsmustache [score hidden]  (0 children)
I don't support doxxing anyone, I'm merely agreeing that there's nothing preventing me from thinking he's an asshole just like there's nothing forcing him to acknowledge someone else's preferred gender nomenclature.
[–]QueenCharla 2 points3 points4 points  (1 child)

So is it genetic then? Is there an argument to be made about nature vs. nurture? I'm seriously asking, not trying to be offensive.
[–]millennialist[🍰] 27 points28 points29 points  (2 children)
Considering they grew up together and work together, they share a lot of nurture too so it's inconclusive.
[–]CountVonVague 7 points8 points9 points  (1 child)
They're also notoriously reclusive and have been for years
[–]artificial001 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
And everyone knows that makes you feel you ought to be the opposite gender. Just look at Helga Hughes and Jackie Danielle (JD) Salinger.
[–]GoodnightElizabeth comment score below threshold-27 points-26 points-25 points  (10 children)
Trigger warning. Non PC response here. Nurture is at least as much a factor, if not more, than any "genetic" predisposition when it comes to sexual identity, especially if it's not the "norm" of heterosexuality. The inclination for most is to follow their biological gender in terms of self-identification and to desire the opposite sex unless severely influenced from the outside - liberal society pushing it/putting it in your head, bad parents, abuse, etc. - it's not like most non-traditional roles are genetically driven - there's not a separate gene out there for every fetish/lifestyle, and there's plenty. I'm not here to say it's a "wrong" choice or a mental aberration, but to use "born that way" for every sexual urge that passionate, lustful people engage in is ridiculous. Nobody uses that excuse for certain lifestyles I think most would agree are pretty sick like pedophiles or bestiality enthusiasts, but as long as no one is hurt and everyone's consenting perversion is impossible, right?
[–]Cogitotoro 9 points10 points11 points  (0 children)
Evidence of any kind?
[–]SeeShark1 10 points11 points12 points  (0 children)
You realize there's nothing inherently sexual about being transgender, right?
[–]ceelo_purple 14 points15 points16 points  (0 children)
Transgenderism is not a sexuality. It does not have a bearing on who you want to boink.
Transgenderism is feeling that the sex of your body does not match the gender of your brain. This feeling is a recognised mental illness with severe and debilitating consequences if left untreated. There is currently no known way to successfully treat gender dysphoria by bringing the brain in line with the body. Treating gender dysphoria by bringing the body in line with the brain is drastic, but is also sound evidence based medicine with good outcomes for treating dysphoria.
The reasons why some people experience gender dysphoria are not yet fully understood, but studies of the brains of individuals with gender dysphoria show physical differences from the brains of non-dysphoric people of the same biological sex, indicating that dysphoria most likely has a biological basis 1. Meanwhile cases where non-medical interventions failed to cure dysphoria provide a strong indication that the role of nurture is negligible 2 as do the results of twin studies showing that among twins who experience gender dysphoria, the dysphoria is more likely to be shared by biologically identical twins than by non-identical twins who shared the same upbringing 3.
[–]clearliquidclearjar 10 points11 points12 points  (5 children)
This is a discussion about transgendered people, not gay people. Those are two different things.
[–]SeeShark1 -3 points-2 points-1 points  (4 children)
There is a certain level of non-heterosexuality and transgender...ism? occurring together.
[–]clearliquidclearjar 2 points3 points4 points  (2 children)
Well, in that some transgendered people are attracted to people of the same gender. But no, who you are attracted to and what gender you are do not have much to do with each other.
[–]SeeShark1 -1 points0 points1 point  (1 child)
I believe the incidence is higher than in cis people, although of course they aren't the same thing at all.
[–]clearliquidclearjar 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)

Too lazy to find the source, but I've heard that was one of the themes of the Matrix for them: nearly everyone is part of a system which imprisons them, and they'll fight to defend it. 'The system' in this case is gender.
[–]GeekAesthete 3 points4 points5 points  (8 children)
The themes of fluid identity in Cloud Atlas (i.e., casting its primary actors in a variety of races and genders) are a lot more significant when you think of the directors themselves.
It's a not a great film, and probably not even a good film, but it's certainly a fascinating film when you consider the people who made it.
[–]CountVonVague 6 points7 points8 points  (2 children)
Actually i thought Cloud Atlas was pretty fantastic. A touch preachy at times but the whole "souls moving through bodies and through time" thing played over rather well. The shifts in story from time-period to time-period was great too

That film was the first time I truly understood Privilege vs Marginalization. Being white, Christian, employed, and a car owner, it was quite the knock on the noggin. I tried to explain to my parents (who are still married and own their house), and I think they caught a glimpse.

The Matrix: Resexualized
  1. This is your last chance, after this there is no turning back; IF you take the blue pill, you'll wake up in your bed like nothing happened. BUT if you take the red pill..... well, you'll gain a rabbits hole.
  2. I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually men. Every man on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you men do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Men are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and the operation is the cure.
  3. I imagine that right now, you're feeling a bit like Alice. hmmm? You could say that.
  4. Why do my breasts hurt? You've never used them before.
  5. So what do you need? Besides a miracle. hormones. lots of hormones.
  6. nobody has ever done this before. That's why it's going to work.
  7. It seems that you've been living two lives. One life, you're Wachowski Brother, script writer for a respectable production company. You have a social security number, pay your taxes, and you... help your landlady carry out her garbage. The other life is lived in labs, where you go by the alias "Wachowski Sister" and are guilty of virtually every bio-engineering crime we have a law for. One of these lives has a future, and one of them does not.
  8. You know, I know this penis doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize? What's the difference.

[–]Whatitisson -4 points-3 points-2 points  (9 children)
Well hacking off your penis isn't the most normal thing.
[–]BaronVonCrunch 10 points11 points12 points  (6 children)
Neither is being left-handed, but we manage to accept that "not the most normal" does not mean "bad".
I understand that something this unusual does seem difficult to accept, but it's important to remember that these people are making unusual biological choices because they are faced with unusual biological circumstances.
I'm really not trying to pick on you here. It's perfectly ok to be uncomfortable with what they are going through. It's probably not something you have any experience with. Unusual stuff can be difficult for all of us.
Just try to remember that it's more difficult for the people who have to deal with unusual circumstances. If you never get over feeling weird about it, that's ok. Just don't burden them with that problem, too.
[–]Whatitisson -3 points-2 points-1 points  (5 children)
I don't care if somebody wants to be a woman or vice versa. The fact that you need to change the structure of your body because of it isn't very common.
[–]ceelo_purple 2 points3 points4 points  (4 children)
It's currently the only scientifically proven way to successfully treat gender dysphoria, which is a dangerous mental illness.
"hacking off your penis" isn't crazy. It's the cure for crazy. (Or at least it's the best cure currently available for one specific type of crazy.)
[–]TheJonesSays [score hidden]  (3 children)
And yet suicide rates for them after transitioning is extremely high.
[–]TheVeldt323 [score hidden]  (2 children)
Could part of that be attributed to the way society treats trans people?
Look at the whole bathroom bullshit. It's not easy being trans.
[–]TheJonesSays [score hidden]  (1 child)
Just because a crossdresser has a new fancy word for themselves does not change their gender. Biology doesn't work like that.
[–]TheVeldt323 [score hidden]  (0 children)
I'm not arguing about the legitimacy of trans people. Nothing I said relates to my opinion on trans people.
What I am talking about is how they are treated. I asked if how they are treated in society could relate to suicides, which seems logical to me. Do you have anything to say to that, or are you going to repeating your view when it doesn't relate?

Just a wild guess but I'd say it's because it's fuckin weird no matter how liberally warped you are? I'm not saying they don't have the right to make the decision, by all means go ahead and take that step but I reserve the right to think that person is insane. If less than 1% of the population do it, it is indeed weird. If less than 1% of the population wants to fuck horses then theyre pretty weird wouldn't you say? And it's over stepping the boundaries to suggest opening horse fucking barn or in this case letting these people use the same restroom as my mother
[–]ceelo_purple 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
You gotta consider the context. Chopping up my face and sewing it back together in a different pattern would be crazy, right?. And less than 1% of the population do that.
But if you're one of the 0.1% of the population born with a cleft palate then having that surgery stops being crazy and starts being an extremely sensible decision that will compensate for your birth defect and enhance your quality of life.

I think it is just more noticed because they are in the spotlight.

Probably.. but I mean.. I don't know anyone in my town that has gone crazy and done that. And that's like 20000 people, ya know.. I dunno

You think about this a lot, don't you? Hey, did you know that many trans people don't get genital surgery?

Given the choice of the magic box or cutting my pecker off I think I'll take the magic box... normality has nothing to do with that decision,if it ain't broke don't fix it

I know people come to terms with themselves in different time frames and ways but I did think it was odd when Lana came out as teams why didn't the other at the same time? Lana was fully transitioned during cloud atlas and jupiter ascending I believe and her sister is more recently announced. To me it seems like it would have been a "me too!!!" Moment for them but I guess it just didn't work that way.
Edit: spelling

I suspect that helping Lana transition is what led Lilly to come to terms with her gender as well.
