I'm disappointed that Ara Rosenthal chose to describe Ms. Bishop's physical qualities--"Madison Bishop—a poised, rosy-cheeked, 18-year old colleague of Mueller’s"--as the first thing we notice about her. Rosenthal didn't do that with Mueller, focusing instead on his work ethic. Why is a young woman's poise and blush being used in an otherwise strong piece about her intelligent response to a legal threat? It seems that Rosenthal is "modeling" Bishop for her readers, in an article about Jeffrey Epstein and a woman who runs a modeling agency! I wish Ms. Rosenthal all the best in her career, but I mostly hope she takes some tough editing courses at Berkeley.

One student is described as rosy-cheeked. Was that important for the reader to know? Many writers, male and female, describe what women in their stories look like or what they are wearing. In contrast, the men in the stories are simply quoted, i.e., men's thoughts and opinions are more important than their appearance.
