I had known Fazlul since 1998, before either of us was married. It was Fazlul who helped my wife find a job at Memorial Sloan Kettering. He was a warm, caring person and a loving uncle who enjoyed playing with my son. We shared many wonderful memories — from me helping him move furniture in my beat-up car to a memorable family trip to Washington, D.C.

Although we later lost touch, the memories never faded. I last spoke with him about ten years ago. Just today, when my wife suggested I call him again, I learned the heartbreaking news of his passing.

Our heartfelt condolences to the entire family. I would be glad to speak with any family member whenever convenient.

A correction, I met him first in about 1978, not 1998. I am not exact when we talk to him last but it was over 10 years before.

Fazlul joined me at Henry Ford Hospital in the late 1980's and then moved to Wayne State University with me in 1991. He was a close colleague for many years. In many ways our careers in science and research matured in a parallel fashion including co-authorship on many journal articles. As Departmental Chair it was a pleasure to support and nurture Faz's scientific career.

Working together for so many years we developed a close personal relationship which we both cherished. I watched his children grow, pursue their education and mature into productive adults. He and his wife were both phenomenal parents, supportive of their children and their careers.

I was sorry to learn of Fazlul's death and that we had lost touch on my retirement and leaving the Detroit area. I always enjoyed his friendship and am proud to consider him a close colleague for many years.

I was fortunate to know and collaborate with Fazlul for almost 40 years. Back in the mid 1980s he moved from the Sloan Kettering to Oakland University' Biological Science Department. I worked in the Chemistry Dept, but we were the only two biochemists on campus with primary research interests in cellular immunology. We soon had frequent discussions on many scientific and personal matters and bonded. A couple of years later I managed to recruit Fazlul to be the Director of Research at my fledgling biotechnology company. Although he only worked there full time for a year or so - having the desire and talent to work at larger institutions and academia - we continued to collaborate for decades. Although we were coauthors and co-inventors of several discoveries, they did not include his major contributions to the understanding of immune regulation, breast cancer biomarkers, and novel anti-cancer compounds. Fazlul was kind, smart, resourceful and passionate about his research in cancer biology. AND he was a great friend. Karen and I were also fortunate to share a few of the milestones of his personal life and knew him as a very loving husband and devoted father. He will be sorely missed.
