At #FYUZ2025 today, we had an engaging discussion unpacking what SMO really is, and what it must become. The discussion moved beyond specs and acronyms to much deeper questions. 𝗦𝗠𝗢 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Today, it functions more like a nervous system, connected and reactive, but not cognitive. Without unified observability, AI-native closed loops, and intent abstraction, it lacks the architectural maturity to perceive, reason, and act across domains. That’s why the evolution of SMO must lead to a broader construct, what we call the Network Intelligent Controller (NIC): a coordination layer where intelligence is federated, composable, and domain-agnostic. SMO shouldn’t be mistaken for a product or platform: • It’s not the RIC, that’s RAN specific controller. • Not just an NSSMF or lifecycle manager, those are functions and not architecture. • And not merely a data lake. Observability is not intelligence. Done right, SMO becomes the execution environment for programmable, policy-driven, AI-native orchestration. And orchestration is only meaningful if it’s aligned with outcomes. QoE is the true signal, without it, autonomy is blind. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲, Full displacement is ideal, but adaptation is real. Legacy OSS can’t be wished away, but it can be wrapped, normalized, and treated as passive observability layers. The real obstacle isn’t just integration, it’s mindset. You can’t pilot autonomy with a legacy playbook. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗠𝗢 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹, It’s about coordinating intelligence across RAN, Core, Transport, Infra, and Apps, and making networks not just open, but truly intelligent.
