The United States Treasury Department Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed new sanctions on Thursday, targeting eight individuals and five entities accused of helping facilitate Cuba's military ties and arms shipments to the Cuban government.
"The Trump Administration will continue to use every tool at our disposal to address the national security threats posed by the Cuban Communist regime, and to drive economic and political reforms to give the Cuban people a better future. As [US] President [Donald] Trump has said, his resolve is ironclad: the United States will not tolerate a rogue state harboring hostile foreign military, intelligence, and terror operations just ninety miles from the American homeland," US State Secretary Marco Rubio said.
Rubio also claimed that the Cuban military and intelligence institutions are "key enforcers of domestic repression and nodes of kleptocracy," and that today's sanctions aim to protect the US national security.
