Not gonna lie, I kind of doubt this, seeing as all of the Jews on the post keep expressing frustration that you wouldn't respond, and we don't usually respond to antisemitism with death threats.

I also find it horrible that your tags here say the difference between the Holocaust and your character is burning books about real stories, not fairy tales. Should we take this to mean you think all of Jewish history is "a fairy tale," or that you don't know what actually happened in the Holocaust and how many scientific and historical texts were destroyed simply because they were written by Jews? (Not to mention the irony of denigrating fiction while...making a piece of fiction....)

And at what point, if any, are you going to actually acknowledge the pain you've caused? People are literally offering to pay for your education to learn why this got a negative response and all you can do is ignore it?

I don’t think it was Jewish people telling me to kill myself and threatening to find me so much as it was people who were excited to attack someone they thought deserved it, but I did receive several and it was really overwhelming.

As for educating myself, I am still reading the comments and tags on the post as it circulates, and I have been reaching out to people who commented criticism individually and privately to further discuss their viewpoints and hear more about what I did wrong. I just don’t feel like the notes of a tumblr post where a lot of people are already very hostile towards me is the right environment for a nuanced conversation.

I do think I fucked up in the way I made this piece, and in the way I responded, which was in a panic and not very well thought through. I didn’t say what I meant to, but that doesn’t matter, because it’s out there now.

As for thinking Jewish history is a fairy tale, the distinction between burning fiction and burning nonfiction is not about me ‘thinking Jewish history is a fairy tale’, but was a visualization of how the two people doing the burning were viewing what was happening, with the girl in the video you saw only thinking she was burning fiction, because she was living in a fictional world where she wasn’t doing anything wrong. The other character then only saw nonfiction, because they are more grounded in reality. But it doesn’t matter, because as I said, I probably won’t end up posting it.

I’m not going to say anything more about this publicly. I am going to continue to reach out to people who are open to talking to me in private so I don’t do something like this again, because I do care, and the LAST thing I wanted in making a video about ignoring people who are suffering in the rise of fascism was to hurt and then ignore the people who have suffered because of fascism.

But I was not prepared for this level of attention or backlash, and have neither the time nor the emotional space to manage a thread with thousands of people weighing in.
