Konami producer Motoi Okamoto says Silent Hill: Townfall is designed to surprise longtime fans, with developer Screen Burn aiming to “massively subvert player expectations” (a red flag for many) while remaining true to the psychological horror at the heart of the series.
Developed by Scottish studio Screen Burn, Townfall takes place in 1996 in the fictional coastal town of St. Amelia, Scotland, rather than the fog-covered American town that gave the series its name. Players take control of Simon Ordell, who awakens with little memory of why he has returned to the abandoned seaside community, where mysterious illnesses, disappearances, and strange supernatural events have unfolded.
According to Okamoto, relocating the game was a deliberate decision to keep the series from becoming repetitive:
“Silent Hill was becoming slightly repetitive. We wanted to refresh the series and create a new sort of experience by interpreting Silent Hill not as a physical location but as a phenomenon, a state of mind.”
Director Jon McKellan acknowledged that following the “success” of Silent Hill f and the recent resurgence of the franchise has been intimidating:
“For us as a team… it’s utterly terrifying to be the next one in the series. But it goes without saying that it’s an honour.”
Despite the new setting, the developers emphasize that Townfall remains rooted in the psychological horror that defines the franchise. Rather than relying solely on familiar monsters or locations, the team hopes players will recognize Silent Hill through its atmosphere, symbolism, and emotional storytelling.
The game also leans heavily into Screen Burn’s signature fascination with retro technology. Instead of the classic handheld radio, Simon carries a CRT television/radio hybrid that can detect nearby enemies and reveal hidden clues through static-filled broadcasts. Old computers, prepaid electricity meters, and other period-appropriate technology are woven directly into exploration and puzzle solving, reinforcing the game’s mid-1990s setting.
McKellan says much of the game’s horror is drawn from personal experiences rather than Hollywood-style scares:
“We try to pull reference from real life because usually that’s less bombastic and more grounded… that’s where the best horror comes from.”
Early previews have praised Townfall’s oppressive atmosphere and richly detailed Scottish setting, while suggesting its story may intentionally mislead players before taking unexpected turns. If Okamoto’s comments are any indication, that unpredictability is exactly what the team hopes will define the experience.
