Localizations are once again under fire as it has been discovered that the official English subtitles for Yani Neko have had Internet “slang” inserted into them again, which are not accurate to the spoken Japanese.
Social media users were sharing a screenshot from the English-subtitled version of the latest episode of Yani Neko, which indicated a female character saying the word “unhoused”:
Of course, the original Japanese version did not have her saying anything remotely close to the “word” that is “unhoused” – in fact, the loan English word “homeless” can be audibly heard:
Audio PlayerThis is yet another instance of English localizers taking liberties with their translation work, demonstrating why most people despise them.

Localizers can die of AIDS.
Oh no? Can anybody explain the difference between unhoused and homeless?
Unhoused has been an English word since at least the 1500s, and it means the same thing now as it did back then. Maybe rather than getting offended like a snowflake over every word you’ve been told to dislike, you should educate yourself.
Real american here. You’re lying by omission. TECHNICALLY its been used yes. But rarely. We call them homeless. Full stop.
Sure, homeless is the standard word in American English (I can’t speak for any other country’s English), but “unhoused” is still an English word that has existed for a long time. The implication of the article, putting word in quotations, is that it’s not an actual word.
Also, regardless of all that, what reason is there in getting upset about it? The meaning of the word is clear. There are plenty of things to criticize about localizations, but this isn’t one of them.
What if the reason to get upset? Ragebait. Clicks and views.
By this reasoning, doesn’t this mean the time period is wrong then? this is a modern era anime, not an old knights and shining armor series
We still use words like chivalry and s♥♥t. Just because the term is old doesn’t mean we stop using it, stupid.
By this reasoning, doesn’t this mean the time period is wrong then? this is a modern reiwa era anime, not an old medieval series

fucking hell, sankaku, display the damn comment lol
I’m American, actually, and you better fucking listen to me bitch because I’m fucking American. We use both now. Eat a dick. If you don’t like it, leave. Land of the free and s♥♥t.
Yup. It’s just a synonym. No reason to mindlessly indulge in a culture war over a ragebait article.
Not just that, there was a moment where a character mentions ero-manga which was clearly spoken and stated in the original Japanese subtitles that somehow got omitted in other subs, odd.
Not just the localization of using stupid ‘PC’ words, but the obvious errors, that even AI SHOULD not be able to make, like using completely different words than what is being said (I spotted several examples last week, where emperor was translated as prince, or count, was translated to duke, which moments later, was shown on screen with a visual representation of hierarchy, PROVING the translation was wrong, like, how the heck do you even?!?!
I know that it might be weird, that I can already hear what they are saying is different than what is translated, but I kind of wish I didn’t need translation at all!! It’s been so bad, for quite some time now and I hate how they keep messing it up, even though they are getting PAID to do the translations!!
(Dutch guy here, that is good at English and through 20 years of watching anime, has become able to understand some words and sentences in Japanese as well)
And let’s put it in terms these morons can understand:
If you want to keep messing up the translations so badly, please ‘unalive’ yourselves and let people that know what they are doing take over. Or just people in general. How much IS generated by AI anyway??
