Struggling To Prevent The Inevitable Cognitive Decline by RNSAFFN in PoisonFountain

Wow. So bro's counter argument is to use worse LLM output, because it makes you think more? FFS stop with this stupidity I can't anymore. Just take out an bullet it all from orbit.

Are you Anti AI in general, or just anti Generative AI? by Retrogamer5421 in antiai

To be fair they called it machine learning to get away from the stigma created by previous over promises by people claiming to have made ai. Think fuzzy logic, etc.

Why did SpaceX buy so many cybertrucks? by Kindly_Candidate3889 in SpaceXBets

[–]gorb314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. I lived in Cali before, and when we left we sold our home gym to a fitness influencer. He was driving a cybertruck with some kind of pink colour shift material on it. Looked like puke. But he was very proud of his muscles. His insta was full of Maga nonsense too. So there are people buying them, but those people are dumber than rocks.

Whats wrong with writing code (not games) with AI? by AnimatorNo8411 in antiai

[–]gorb314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm really done answering this 'innocent" questions about genai and coding. But here's one last go.

Like, do you understand that these models are trained on stolen code; code that may be open source but has limitations on its re-use, especially for commercial products? IP theft is *everywhere* in genai training, not just in books or art.

Then we get to the environmental impact. We get to the destruction of the economy. We get to the the layoffs (whether due to ai itself or as an excuse), displacement of poor people to build datacenters, and the effect it is having on inflation. I can go on and on.

They claim it will cure cancer (it won't they've already given up on that), it'll cure climate change (who is doing that ai research?), it'll solve our math and physics problems (so far it has solved a couple of math that was clearly within a human's reach). None of these fantasies matter.

The real reason "ai bad" is this: Once you give your thinking over to a chatbot, no matter how much you resist, you start to slip into accepting everything it says. Why do a search and read through news, or a blog post, or a forum discussion, if ai can just give you the answer you're looking for? Because that is what they want you to do, so they can feed you lies. Subtle at first, but it gets worse over time. Changing statistics, facts, names, dates, places. If they get caught, they just use the excuse "the ai hallucinated, we are not at fault".

How often do you see someone on twitter ask grok for the facts of a discussion. WTF? Why does anyone trust what a chatbot says? One that has been repeatedly tweaked by Elon's team to spit out lies. You think only grok does this? They all do.

Back to your innocent use of ai. "But bro, I'm only using it to code my game, promise". All I'll say is this: You feed the machine, the machine feeds on you. You give it your cash, you take its tainted harvest, and you bring us all down. For what? You don't want to just learn how to code?

Fuck ai. Use your brain.

He forgot to say "don't any mistakes", and "you are an expert". Dumbass. How are we now supposed to trust grok's output and get an accurateassessment of Ed's analysis. Sheesh.

These capitalist sycophants all conflate being wealthy with being smart. No, they are wealthy because they are greedy and ruthless. They are not smart. They sold their grandmother, and they'll sell you. Stop idolizing rich people.

That's where the idea of "syntax is not semantics" come from. You can make a gazillion sentences that are grammatically correct but factually nonsense. We can never express exactly how we feel, because the mapping from semantics to syntax is incomplete.  So our brains do this cool thing where we try to imagine what someone is thinking from what they're saying. Enter the chatbot. The text looks like someone speaking, so our brains try to imagine that there is someone thinking behind it. And that's the Eliza Effect.

Ask yourself this: did slave owners need the slaves to buy food from them? Or did the slaves just not get anything, and the slave owners trade with each other? You think that they plan on needing our money once they've sucked up all wealth and power? They don't want you to have any money at all.

Or as others are putting it: you think that's air you're breathing?

Sure Jen. You know what department Google just shuttered? Alpha fold. You know, the one that was doing cancer research. So just hold on tight to that "llms will cure cancer and climate change, just one more data centre bro" fuzzy feeling. Let me know how you go, k?

[–]gorb314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason doesn't matter. Think about it: if alpha fold was even close to a cure, imagine the PR: "Google cures cancer with ai". We would not hear the end of it. So the only conclusion is that they weren't. And they don't care. Ai is a grift.

Has anyone stopped using LLMs completely for coding and relying purely on themselves? by Gil_berth in theprimeagen

[–]gorb314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to answer this in good faith.

First, let's set aside the fact that LLMs are built on stolen data, are wrecking the economy, and destroying the environment. You don't have to care about that, but I do.

Even if you're happy with all of that, you cannot trust the output of an LLM.

Now, if you care about the output, you can't just use it. You'll have to modify it. The output is subtly wrong, or misleading, or unmaintainable. You have to keep using an LLM to develop.

If you don't care about the output, as so many of the ai bros who replied to me here, then you're a dev that can't code well / never cared. Gtfo of sw, you don't belong.

The only excuse for using these is of you are somehow being forced at work, find another job if you can.

This. This is exactly why the hugging face/openai thing feels faked to me. And if not entirely faked, at least partially faked. Because all of this is to drive up hype and scare up more cash from investors for their cool technology that definitely works trust me bro.

“It’s just for code and to learn about new tech!” Okay, well no, Hank Green is using AI to research and script videos. by PrestigiousDemand696 in antiai

[–]gorb314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is a great communicator. But unfortunately he drank the kool aid... I used to love his videos but now I've unsubscribed and put him on the ban list. LLMs contribute nothing to society. If you already know your field, you don't need it, and if you don't, you can't trust the output. AI exists so billionaires can make more money. As Ed Z says, no one in tech has a new product. They've tried crypto, they've tried nfts. Now the only thing that is left is chatbot clones that feed the needs of narcissists.  We need to bring this shit down. Fuck ai. Use your brain.

[–]gorb314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure. You can be as precise as you want in any measurement system. But imperial makes it hard, way harder than it should be. Up to some point you start working in fractions of an inch, and then you get to decimal thousandths of an inch. And unless you whip out your calculator, converting between the different imperial measurements (miles, yards, feet, inches, fractions and thousandths) is a nightmare. When in metric all you do is shift the decimal point. Metric is not only better because it is simpler. Imperial is moronic.

Google just killed alphafold, the part of their ai "business" that was supposed to work on cancer. The researchers were reassigned to work on the Gemini chatbot.  So no, ai/llms won't do "advanced healthcare", nor lower the cost of healthcare or anything else. You know what will Ursula? Get the fuck out of the way and REGULATE pharmaceutical companies and their price gouging. Regulate universities so that more doctors and nurses can be trained for cheaper. Stop with the neocon bullshit. We're tired of it.

What actually happens when I ask LLMs a question so silly that 1000% wasn't in their training data? by LateToTheParty013 in BetterOffline

[–]gorb314 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Models "hallucinate" all the time. That is, there is no difference between that one time the model spat nonsense at you, and the other time when it gave you a correct answer. The words it produces are generated randomly from statistically linked tokens, where the statistics were generated during the model training phase. Sometimes the dice to goes bad, where bad is defined as not producing a fact. And right is defined as producing a fact. They call it hallucinating because it anthropomorphises the model, to help trick you into thinking there is some form of thinking behind the curtain. There is not. Just dice rolling and lookup tables.
