Xbox Disc to Digital Arrives This Month for Xbox One and Series X

Microsoft's internal roadmap for the Disc to Digital feature has been leaked, revealing that the feature will be generally available this month. According to the roadmap, an insider beta of the Disc to Digital feature has been available since July, with general availability for Xbox One and Series X owners expected in August. For those unfamiliar, Disc to Digital is Microsoft's initiative to promote a digital-only future for Xbox consoles. This feature allows players to insert their game discs into the console to convert them into digital licenses. When the disc is scanned, Microsoft uses the unique key to create a digital license, which prevents the disc from being activated on third-party consoles and stops it from being rented, borrowed, or sold to others.

This marks a significant shift away from physical disc game releases, as both Sony and Microsoft are moving towards ending disc-based games, encouraging gamers to use digital licenses exclusively. According to the roadmap, Xbox One and Series X users will be the first to scan their games and obtain digital licenses, as these consoles have physical disc readers. Game licensing will now be tied to the specific user account, with Xbox managing all engineering, certification, and support efforts if any issues arise. However, publishers retain the right to participate, maintaining full control over rights, pricing, and branding.
Additionally, the leaked roadmap indicates that Microsoft plans to fully release the Xbox Backwards Compatibility program on PC by October this year, allowing gamers to play original Xbox titles on their PC through Game Pass or the Xbox Store. In the coming years, Microsoft intends to transition its Xbox 360 game catalog to next-generation Xbox devices, likely coinciding with the arrival of the next-generation console to ensure full backward compatibility with titles dating back to the Xbox 360 era.

All this "digital-only" stuff is making me sad.
I see no point of converting discs to digital at all, people literally buy discs to have a sense of owning a game and avoid taking up storage space but this has taken both advantages away.
(I am aware that some discs just contain a key but most of them still store complete games/most of the game files)
Also ik this is probably just me and it's stupid to even mention this but there's a ritualistic feeling when you insert the game disc that booting a digital game just can't replicate. To me a console without a disc drive is no different than a SFF or a Mac mini, id rather go buy a steam machine.
Most likely this is just a strategy to promote the sales of Xbox's stupidly expensive storage cards or for Microsoft to have an excuse to take your stuff away from you. Say goodbye to owning your games or playing them offline. Say goodbye to collecting anything since all you'd be able to collect is sadness and dread of having it taken away from you when you buy a new game.

I don't own a console and never will, but my stepson does and has for years, so he's the only direct source I have for an opinion on console news. To say he's furious would be an understatement, especially when I asked his opinion on the recent Sony announcement. People like him like to collect, so I'm wondering why physical disc aficionados would even consider Disc to Digital when it goes against the ethos of trading discs?

to be fair...game discs do tend to scratch up/fail for no apparent reason now or then so if a game disc is really old then I might consider making it digital, but that's about it.
I ain't feeding no discs to Microsoft and if they force me to I shall never connect my series x to internet again

So, the original vision of Xbox One, that tanked it before launch is coming to fruition, I guess?

This whole time you have needed to have an internet connection to play your disc games? Or is this something that they are turning on now with the release of this capability? Disabling your physical copy because you imported the key into your digital store would require an internet connection going forward for everyone.

And they were saying Helix will have a disc drive... lol

It'll probably have a disc-addon to get extra money out of those that NEED it

We really should be pushing for any software license to be transferable. If they have all this infrastructure to enforce a supposedly unique digital license per account, this feature should be easy to implement.

The convenience is too great for many to switch back to physical... Sure there's a market to collect stuff but nowadays even if you buy the physical it hardly works fully from disc, and this is why many are making the change.

Far be it from me to defend MS, but anyone who bought Half-Life 2 at a retail store (all the way back in 2004) has already experienced this. Once you installed Steam and activated the key code, the physical media became effectively worthless, and there was no opt-out. For better or worse, I'm honestly surprised physical media survived as long as it has. The question becomes, how well will they maintain their digital locker? I can still play my copy of HL2 on Steam--will the same be said for these console games 22 years later?

Yup, and they'll still making money off it, because no doubt they'll hit us with a "reselling" fee.

How long before this is automatic and the console “congratulates” you for your new digital license when you insert a disk?
