[4chan] The Philmarilion
Ah, 4chan. You either loved or hated it, but there was no doubt that the site had a lot of colorful characters. It had a lot of different boards too, each with their own "culture"; although they could occasionally come together for glorious unity. This is a story from one such board, /sp/.
What are tripcode users/What is 4chan? A primer.
Back in the good old 4chan days, there were many people who participated in 4chan. Most posted as an anonymous user; a feature of the site, which was based off of Japanese imageboards like 2ch. However, some chose to use keep themselves identified with a username and tripcode, which functioned much like Discord's hashtag identifier. The randomized garble of letters, symbols and numbers soon becoming as familiar to 4chan users as the username itself. People could make a username at any point on the site, but most chose not to as a part of the "board culture" which glorified anonymity and distanced social interaction. To be fair, there was also an element of social anxiety, autism and general mental disorder to go along with it. If you got into an argument with one user on one thread, you could come together as brief friends on another thread in another day. People could not normally track your posts as an anon (unless they were creeps who studied your typing style), which dissuaded a lot of post stalkers. Similarly, your triumphs were brief flashes in the pan.
Trip users gave up this anonymity and fleetingness in order to build up their own reputations, for good or for bad. This commonly was met with anger or sullenness by the other anonymous users, who often would refer to tripcode users as "tripf*gs". Still, one could not deny that tripcode users were useful as they had much more weight behind their words and a strong ability to command a thread if they were old enough and had done enough things. Many tripcode users were, in essence, "mini-celebrities" of their board. This brought more scrutiny upon them, and as one tripcode user would find out, creepers.
The story.
/sp/ was the 4chan board for sports. It discussed games of any kind, although they often warred over certain, somewhat insignificant topics in comparison to the wider world. (This Team Sucks! Wrestling doesn't belong in /sp/! American football is boring and stupid!) One of the tripcode users, a mini-celebrity like I talked about earlier, was a European who went by the trip UTV. As described by the Daily Dot, UTV was a british man who followed the Premier League, liked the Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, and enjoyed..."racial humor". He was known to be very, very active, and very very caustic and aggressive to other users on the board, very up his own ass. Not many people liked him. Aside from one.
Apparently, around July 1, 2013, an anon calling themself "The Archiver" began recording each and every post that UTV made, commenting in each thread and stalking his every move. As quoted in the Philmarilion,
[S]ometimes it is impossible to resist speaking to him, he is a naked woman and I must have a peek,” the archiver explained. “As you can see, his responses to me are generally good natured ‘banter’ with humorous intention that show the sweet, tender relationship that we share together.
This while UTV had somewhat noticed someone was stalking him and was attacking them with insults and hatred.
This continued for about 3 months. About 1,472 logs were tallied, Archiver recording and finding every single post this very active user made daily. It spiraled past that. Soon, Archiver was composing poems and songs based off UTV. He was creating his own Rorschach ink blots out of UTV's posts. He was planning for their life together. Their (or UTV's) funeral (with other tripcode users, remember what I said about tripcode users being mini celebs?). He was creating little to-do lists to complete and labeling certain food items as belonging to UTV. He made a welcome mat out of the posts of many of UTV's haters, and a belt of UTV's posts to guard himself.
When I have to go out and miss UTV I always want to read some of his posts,” the archiver wrote. “This idea is a belt with UTV posts attached that allows me to quickly pull off a UTV post at any time for my reading. They are all responses to me and seem more personal and make me miss him less.
Probably among the creepiest of posts had him considering kidnapping UTV and leaving a ransom note for his family, or posting 3 very creepy, short videos that some anon users would later speculate came from inside UTV's flat. There was definitely a sexual or at least romantic component to this obsession, although according to the Archiver he didn't feel that way. At least...he never physically harassed or came near UTV in person?
The fallout.
Around October 6th, the Archiver made his last known posts to /sp/. For months he had been "secretly" collecting information on UTV. Although many 4channers were by this point probably aware of what he was doing, nobody was quite aware of the extent of his madness.
In his final post, he detailed that his family had found out about his obsession and were forcing him to remove everything, to never do something like it ever again. They were also apparently monitoring his activities to ensure this would stay the case. In order to protect his work (97 pages by this point), he had to release it. And release it he did. Right into a random thread.
His last words were" "I am sorry to UTV and hope he sees this and understands".
Holy *shit* everyone freaked out. 97 pages of pure madness focused around one trip user? The story spread like wildfire, UTV himself only responding once with
?
before vanishing off of 4chan, never to be seen by /sp/ again. It became a tale covered by the Daily Dot as an example of how nutty 4chan users could be, and a cautionary tale by 4chan users of the protections that anonymity granted you. It also made /sp/ the focus of much mockery by the other boards, who often engaged in mostly lighthearted rivalry with each other. The document itself is still archived on many harddrives and stored in many places, but its main home is still up.
Consequences were the vanishing of UTV from the site, many tripcode users no longer using trips to avoid a similar scenario and much entertainment for years to come.
I leave you all with a link to the document itself, in all of its 97 page glory. I hope you read it, it only goes downhill from here. If you don't want to read, there are other articles that give summaries of the situation a bit further below.

A part of me wonders if the archiver was doing all this to makeutv uncomfortable and to drive him off the board... I mean, from what I understand about early 4chan (and today's 4chan too, I guess), they're really into trolling, and honestly, if no one really liked the dude, I wouldn't be surprised if the archiver decided to troll utv off the board. I hope that made sense, lol. Anyway, super interesting write-up. 4chan's culture is pretty interesting, and if you know of any other stories like this, I'd love to see another post
4chan culture is really cool, and the spinoffs that exist years later (I'm talking lolcow.farm, 8chan, etc) maintain a lot of the same "cultural traits" as their parent board. There's a heavy disdain for new users and "posting wrongly" or with poor grammar, using reaction images, use of saging, willingly clumping up into a kind of weird, disparate "hivemind" (again, most anon don't like to make themselves stand out too much and refuse to use usernames or trips on principle! Even if they fight for ages on a thread!) and referring to themselves as a single group or by their board identity. IMO it's got more of a cohesive, general site identity than Reddit does. Although to be quite fair on Reddit you can make a near-infinite number of subreddits instead of being stuck on one board like on 4chan.
I used to be a 4channer myself and I saw both a lot of ugliness and a lot of beauty in that anonymous freedom. The freedom everyone had to speak their mind and not get permanently chased after for it or offer kindness for no reward, etc definitely formed a lot of my present-day opinions.
Many people felt "safe" enough to talk about horrible things that happened to them, and many channers held a lot of empathy for random strangers on the internet.
Jesus. I remember hearing about this but I never actually sat down and read any of the Philmarilion.
Can you even imagine being UTV, reading that, and realized that some stranger out there was absolutely obsessed with you to that degree? I don’t think I’d ever be able to sleep again.
A very bad part was that it was very likely that stalker lived in the same area as him too...and that he knew my real name and other things. I would not be happy knowing that if I was him.
To be completely honest, there are a bunch of 4chan events you could put on here, just because things go crazy every single time.Moot selling the site and then it being split into 4channel, anything Internet Historian has covered, the rock doc, the whole nine yards.
The 4chan vs Tumblr war is a prime contender for this. That stuff was amazing to watch when it happened.
I could probably write something up on that myself. From hate to attraction, it was pretty funny.
That pdf is a work of art, a creepy horrible weird ass stalker work of art. Ya boi compiled some random dudes racist posts... not only by country they're aimed at but shaped them in the outline of the country... he even put in the boarder for northern island properly... I'm in awe at this idek what to do with this information wtf
4chan is a weird place, that's all I can say.
This is pure unbridled insanity.
Christ, I remember watching this unfold in real time. It was insane. I kept thinking that it couldn't possibly be real and that it must be some sort of really intricate practical joke, but having read through the pure unfiltered insanity that was theUTV info dump , I can honestly say there is no way anyone would go this far for the purposes of comedy. Only a truly unhinged mind would create something as cursed as this, and for reasons we will never truly comprehend.
I remember being in /x/ when this went down and I kinda just logged out of my trip code and never came back to it because I was a minor and this weirded me out
wait i always thought the philmarilion was a joke. you’re telling me the anon who made it was being SERIOUS?!
It still reads like an extremely dedicated troll to me, it's just so ridiculous
I get what you mean but like... this is a lot... this is beyond shit like my immortal people really do have far too much time on their hands the internet was gods mistake
Wow. There's a lot to say about the virtues of anonymity vs being known on the internet on various platforms but all I can say right now is... wow.
I just. . . wow.
I can’t believe I just sat here and read all 97 pages. I’m convinced it’s a joke tho. It seems like an unpopular opinion, but when I was younger this was exactly the sort of thing I would think was super funny to do. But who knows really. Definitely crazy
Up until the videos and the kidnapping ideas, it sounded like pure, crazy invention. But that took a creepy turn quite fast.
This is some 4chan shit altight. "racism maps", what a lovely tribute, lmao.
Those videos look like the stuff people would post on /x/ as "proof" and for some reason that made them really funny to me. I hope it was all just trolling and them filming their own place.
Was The Archiver calling it the Philmarilion a reference to the Silmarillion? Because that was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title.
This post is a month old, but I'm been glad to have found it. 😂😂😂😂 Thanks for the write up.

Atrocity Guide did a really good video on this on YouTube, too
4chan doxxed my nudes.
Anonposting is the best kind of posting.
Honestly, the entirety of the Philmarilion was freaky
There used to be time to time posts on /int/ about "/int/ users you recognized" and it's absolutely hilarious. "Oh that greek guy who always quote this line" "That balkan guy who always curses crimea" etc.
It's charming how anons are warmed up to eavh other by recognizing such things.
People take this so serious when it is clearly a legendary troll. I laughed a lot reading it.
