Honestly I have been slacking a little the last few weeks due to burnout after getting rejected for a role that I was quite further in. I don’t know whether I’ll even get a job

You can do it, Gatta be a lot more aggressive with the job applications and be open minded. From what I gather, getting low pay is better than no pay.

CS Major here, I only got one offer after ~100 applications but I ended up rejecting it as it was >$1k below median. Slowly regretting it though because I'm still unemployed now 😂

Might be the biggest mistake, when your next offer is $500 lesser than the one you rejected....

This is like Deal or No Deal gameshow, but the probability of he offers getting bad to worse is higher

I totally understand though, when I realized how I compared to reported peers, I’m (subjectively) far from the median and it affected my self esteem a lil. If anything, I lost the early match but I hope to win the long game

Depending on your school, but NUS’s CS is well above Singapore’s median

Also DSA with CS 2nd major if that even matters LOL. I’m also foreigner so naturally that restricted my pool. I only can apply to MNC and some bigger companies. I got locked out of mycareerfuture as well.

I think I also shot myself in the foot because my last internship was AIML so my experiences are only AIML and those full time roles related AIML usually prefer foreigners with master IF they even consider foreigners. It also happened that my team also never have headcount for foreigners even though my boss said he would love for me to join back.

Good thing is I did get interviews at least but flunked it cuz I think I’m just not what they were looking for. Currently I’m expanding to Data Analyst and Data Engineer roles as well even though I have no actual internship experience for those. I also have the deadline of 1 year to stay in SG so I’m also doing a research and side project to learn stuff.

A question for you though, what experience did you have that landed you the DE role? I’m working on spark and then cloud next and hopefully that opens up something for me in the DE area.

I only had one internship and it’s data engineering role for healthcare. Although my title is “data engineer”, it was mostly data analyst roles and we manipulated using Spark Dataframes and Spark SQL in DataBricks environment

I see. Just curious, did you guys do optimisation with spark like caching or early filtering or repartitioning or just use it to do manipulation? I’m learning about it and curious how it works it practice. But yea your experience is DE enough since you used all those things which our DSA curriculum didn’t explicitly teach as well

Not necessary but I had a lot of free time so I managed to do the following

  1. Strategic caching (gatta observe the DAG to see when’s a good place to cache given your cluster specs)
  2. Early filtering should always be done in general if not you’re just taking up more memory resources
  3. Be well versed with the differences between narrow and wide operations and their impact on memory management
  4. Minimize usage of UDFs
  5. Reduce unnecessary joins (and find out why this is bad specifically to spark processing)

CDE graduate here, got 1 offer after applying for over 500+ positions and multiple referrals. Started early in Jan, only got it in June. The job market is devastating.

If you are using AI in your applications, communications and even work, you may want to reconsider.

Employers are now experts in discerning AI written replies because they all look similar.

Man its even harder if you are on student pass. Been searching since career fair. Many jobs do not offer work pass for fresh grads.

Ur answer is DSA sia. One of the worst majors for employment since its overly saturated and frankly any tom dick Harry can do DSA with a little effort

Haha I’ve been trying not to say it since some employers look at Reddit too, but I wholly agree. It’s much better to do a major that’s domain specific and take data science as a minor since many of the mods are fluff. Hopefully the new Data Science & AI major does better.
