In Red Sparrow, Jennifer Lawrence plays a Russian ballerina who becomes an undercover spy. However, the most unrealistic scene is actually about hair color — and it's sparked quite a bit of controversy online. In one scene, Jennifer's character, Dominika, tries to go blonde. She attempts to achieve flaxen status by purchasing a box of drugstore hair dye, applying it to her thick brunette hair (without gloves, might we add), and then proceeds to go swimming shortly after. Needless to say, we've got more than a few questions here.
If you've ever tried to go blonde from a naturally darker shade, then you already know that the first rule is do not do it at home; going dramatically lighter is a long, complicated process, best trusted to a trained professional. Not to mention, it can take anywhere from several hours to accomplish. If you've got brunette like Dominika's in Red Sparrow, you'll need up to four appointments to achieve platinum, all of which should ideally be spaced out with eight to ten weeks to maintain the integrity of the hair.
Naturally, the beauty experts on Twitter were quick to call out Red Sparrow's red flag. "Not that I was expecting Red Sparrow to be an accurate representation of what it’s like to be a Russian spy but I draw the line at dyeing your hair brunette to blonde with BOX DYE & WITHOUT GLOVES," wrote Allure editor Sable Yong. "Consider my disbelief the opposite of suspended!!"

Let that be a lesson to any future filmmakers (and aspiring blondes) out there: always do your research, or the result will not be pretty.
