So now we have yet another stupid and pointless "Doom the Way id Did" wannabe project. Do we really need that? Maybe, but only if this nobody is up for the challenge, no to mention all the other newbies, who are likely to join this project and fail to create a proper homage. I'm saying "newbies" because i doubt any prominent mapper will look at this thing and take it seriously. When it comes to the original DTWID offerings, i don't think they did a very good job either... they're kinda of a hit-and-miss in my opinion. I liked the first episode of DTWID, but by the second episode they completely lost me with their nonsensical, confusing progressions (typical for egocentric narcissists like Xaser and co.), which was unlike anything id did. The visuals were there, the gameplay wasn't. Which is why i wonder, what is the fucking point? Just create a normal vanilla CP and aim for a respectable 10-15 map goal, because there's no chance in hell you'll get 32 maps from this, considering the lead has registered only a few months ago and has barely done jack shit since then.

This may very well be another case of a depressed reject, who starts a community project because he's desperate for human interaction, considering this other thread by him, posted just a few days prior:

What a fucking mess! How come the biggest losers always end up on Troonworld spilling their guts, like anyone would give a crap? For anyone who sees this and still thinks this guy is trustworthy enough to bring this project to completion, better think again. This guy needs to go outside and meet people, instead of rotting away on Troonworld, trying to run shitty projects.

Let's see what the justification behind his brilliant idea is:

IDmitation is a comproj where it's goal is to make maps based off how the Authors of Doom 2 did so. You may notice that this is similar to "Doom 2, The way ID Did" released (as of 2026) 13 years ago, rest assured yes it is, but there are differences, How Doom was released about 19 years ago when DTWID2 was made, and it was led and created by a small team of mappers such as Xaser and Co.

By the way, i'm not editing the contents of these quotes, so if you're wondering what "comproj" is, apparently, it stands for "comprehensive project", but i guess he was too lazy to type these two words.

Small team of mappers? The second one had a smaller team indeed, but still probably way more than you're about to get for your project. The first DTWID had a huge pool of mappers, with over 80 submitted maps in total. Also, what does time have to do with anything?

It's been 30 years Since Doom 2 was released and many fans have studied the original games maps, and gotten more insight about Old ID. Since DTWID2 was released before Romero released never before seen at the time assets and insight in Doom, And it's been 13 years after DTWID2, I think the community should have another crack at trying to imitate the mappers that laid the foundation of this game we play all the time.

So what? You say many fans have further studied the original IWAD designs since 2012? And how many of those mappers who have studied it you're expecting to attract here? Because in 2026 it is more likely to get mappers who have barely played the original IWADs and are more familiar with Eviternity 2 and Sunlust than anything from the 90s. Looking at the state of modern mapping and the current trends, the disrespect towards the classic Doom design has never been as obvious as it is now.

"Oh, but you see, John Romero has since released a ton of unused assets and insights", so that makes worth it, right? Complete nonsense once again. What does unreleased assets have to do with the classic maps, when they were never part of them? His "logic" here literally hurts my brain. And about Romero's insights, they were hardly a secret before 2016, and are mostly about his own levels, so what about all the other designers from id that you have no new insights on? And what about the Sigils? You're not going to mention them in your little sales pitch there? Are people allowed to take inspiration from them, or do they go against your understanding of a classic Romero map?

I admit, i am a bit too harsh towards the kid, because i'd be happy to see more classic oriented mapping projects, but not from confused losers who have no idea what they're talking about. He's out of his lane, big time.

Here's another example of his stupidity:

Compatibility is Boom, but don't do any nifty pseudo scripting tricks, like VooDoo dolls. Boom is just here for convenience such as UMAPINFO, as far as you know, map like it's Vanilla.

There you go, you already failed. If you want to do it right, then do it right and go for vanilla compatibility. If you're looking for convenience, you're not really doing it the way id did. And you really don't need UMAPINFO, though you can still use it in -cl2, to set up level and authors names, midis, skies, intermission screens etc... What else would you need it for, anyway, dummy? Going Boom is a guarantee that someone will pull some voodoo nonsense, or go overboard with the detailing, or create an oversized, overcrowded turd, despite you telling them not to. Bottom lines is, if you're going to map like the id guys, fucking do it like them and commit to the vanilla limits, don't tell the newbies who are joining this turd, and are just as clueless as you, to "map like it's vanilla", because they won't.

You must pick a map author's design philosophies from the list below, if you're curious on how these authors made their maps, go through their levels, to find the levels they made, use the Doom wiki (not fandom wiki)

Authors:
Sandy Petersen
American McGee
Tom Hall
John Romero

So let me get this straight... We went from, "this project exists because 14 years have passed since the original DTWID, and we have studied these maps during this time and have new insights on them" (heavily implying that the project exists to do a better job than the original DTWID), to "if you don't understand the original design, just go and play these maps right now". Which one is it, dummy? Do you want mappers who have studied id's design philosophy, or you're inviting every newbie under the sun, who's never played these maps before? What was the point of the whole introduction again? What was the point of this project... again?!

Wild Card Guests: These mappers aren't typically more prolific than the ones above, but they have technically worked for ID for Doom related level design at some point or another, and as a result, anyone who maps for this project may pick one of these wild cards to base their level design on for shits and giggles. One per customer, get 'em while they're hot!

Shawn Green open
Tim Willits open
Tom Mustaine open
Milo/Dario Casali (Taken)

The second list of level designers is stupid. First of all, the Casali brothers, "not as prolific"? Together they made more maps than Romero before the Sigils, so they are very much as prolific as any id Software alumni. A total of 36 official maps in Plutonia and TNT is not enough, i guess. But should they and the other three designers be considered a part of the classic id software design philosophy? TNT Evilution was made independently of id, and later bought by the company. It is a mid 90s community project as anything else from that time. The Casali's were hired to make Plutonia, but they were given complete freedom to do what they want, so they didn't quite follow id's design philosophy either.

So far, so bad, but... believe it or not, there are some big positives here and i have to give credit where credit is due.

A huge positive is the presence of demo maps, made by the lead. I was shocked to find out that he made not one, not two, but four maps, so a big bravo to him. Even better, the maps are good for what they're trying to accomplish. The only thing i don't like here is how he chose to "re-made" the first four maps, which are the shortest and easiest to make. Once again, we have someone who takes the easiest route, and expects others to do the more interesting, challenging and time-consuming portion of the set. What you get is a very generic Entryway/Underhalls run and gun action. If i was in his place i would have taken one early, one mid and one late game map. But hey, maybe he'll make more later? We'll have to wait and see. The music choices are also retarded and completely break the illusion of the maps being id Software inspired, despite looking like something Sandy Petersen could have made. He probably should have gone with the original music, just shuffle it around to different slots. Map03 for example uses a horrible midi rendition of Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady". I can't think of a worst midi to put in a Doom map. It destroys any immersion. The other music choices weren't much better.

Another positive worth mentioning, is the deadline. Yes, we have a deadline for December 10th, which should be sufficient. The question is, will he keep the deadline if he doesn't get the full 32 maps? That remains to be seen, so we'll have to do a follow-up on this project at the end of the year. All things considered, i don't think he'll last that long, because of that depression-fueled post of his above. I wouldn't trust this guy to get the job done. I predict a silent exit or project cancellation within a month or two, but i hope he proves me wrong.

Just poked around a bunch of maps and looks like some good old fashioned Doom. Even as a fan of short maps I will say e1m3 is way too short though.

You said you made most maps in Boom format. If you used any Boom actions you should change 'limit-removing" to "Boom" in the title to avoid confusion.

Also welcome to the site. Always glad to see maps being shared.

Checked out the first Episode, it's a solid and nicely played E1 homage but with actual original maps instead of the usual part-mixing. "Limit-Removing" is actually used well since some platforming and crouching is to be done. It features quite the new and well-used texture work along with other Doom beta assets. Unlike other slopmages these add a personality and don't interefere with Doom's near perfect gameplay loop. It's not too difficult (for me at least) even on UV so at least E1 won't be much of a challenge after getting a feel for it. I recommend!

E1 - 8/10

Other E's following soon...

Yeah, you're probably right. Part of the reason for the simplicity thus far topside is so I can take a sledgehammer to the experiments that don't pan out, and I'm rethinking bits now. I've been planning to include a second sizable cave portion, and will probably shift emphasis more to that and ditch the wall drop. Started to realize it wasn't going to work when I previewed it with the now former western area exposed to the open.

Implying the present is fucked up. Is this guy trying to get banned from DW? Maybe
he wanted in on CCP but missed the boat.
1. A Daikatana-styled Time Travel community project would actually be such a great idea, going through each era chornologically, fighting appropiate enemies with respective weapons of that point in time. Too bad no one ever thought to get creative or even absurdly pulpy from the Troonworld side of things. Copying what's there is easy instead of building on it, now isn't it? Anyhow I would have many ideas already, especially after having played Chasm The Rift with the same concept albeit smaller with only four episodes with three themes. I think the most interesting would be Ancient Rome/Greece, the Qing Dynasty, and the Dark Age of Medieval Times, at least personally speaking. The Ice Age wouldn't also be bad with how insane you could get with all the mammals.

2. I think "Fucked Up Present" is meant to go with the project title where Doomguy altered history so horrifyingly terrible that the Present is a jumbled mess of all of it (aka projects with custom textures allowed for any map). Since you start out in the Present it could even be just copy-pasted maps expanded with this idea. Quite terrible since Dystopian Future with the looks of Chasm or Avenging Angel would've had a better fit as the ending period. Instead it's just a lazy way to repeat prior stuff to filler out the end. How original.

And why i wasn't banned yet Is because i am acting more carefully after i was banned for posting Hexen warez cluelessy 19 years ago (!!!) with my old monicker daimonreloaded. And, huh, i am not getting triggered easily for all the things you guys are easily triggered.
Careful or not Guilt by Association is at play here so better get a limousine with a bullet-proof roof. Also getting "triggered" over wanting to normalize the community and bring it back to its gloriness akin to here? Is caring about upholding a good or even best place for a fan group of something? The countless troonies endangering every child brave enough to open Troonworld? The countless fags spilling their rainbow guts with depression ballads and suicidal cries? The basement dweller control freaks controlling every typed key of yours? Shouldn't this all raise concern? This is NOT the future, NOT the way to go forward. And yet like a foreigner you simply couldn't care about your surroundings as long as yourself are in safe, warm waters? I like you and your passion for proper community projects is needed but think about the whole situation. Even if we may appear as "crybabies" to some its quite the opposite. Voicing your opinion over something despicable is not "crying", it's excersising your basic rights as a human. And the concerns from here are more than valid since they come out of a place of pure passion. We love Doom and we hate it being destroyed by those who do not belong to it.

They're eventually going to sniff you out and ban you akin to Medieval Times where your execution meant as an example, Guilty or Not Guilty. There's a reason why they were already trigger-happy back then with your Hexen warez. Wouldn't they simply suspend you? Teach you on why that is so? No, they shat their pants instead and perma-banned you right away. Not a great start to things. If that so happens don't wine like I started out and get on with it. Here's a good place to celebrate the true side of Doom, even with a handful of retards still hanging around (sperglord for example LMFAO). Would You Download D'Sparil's Heart?

This “project” has all the hallmarks of many delusional newbies, who think they're ready to organize and lead CPs, before even releasing a single solo map of their own. What can possibly go wrong?

destituteamn431 immediately caught my attention the other day, even before starting this development thread. He made a different thread, asking if people are willing to work with him on a project, after supposedly deleting his entire map catalog by accident, a grand total of 20 maps, that he supposedly worked for a long time. This is where i take issue with this guy. His thread has a “deception” written all over it. Okay, so he deleted his maps, and instead of panicking, and posting questions for ways to recover them, the first thing he does is to start a recruitment thread for a CP? I don't think so. I bet he never made a single map. You can tell by his shady replies, when people started giving him options to recover his data, he shows immediate disinterest to even try. Put yourself in that scenario. 20 maps take a lot of work, no one will simply turn their back on it, not if there's a chance for recovery. Well, guess, what? He eventually gets asked this exact question, and now he claims he actually had only 2 maps, instead of 20. He implies that his wad was meant to have 20 maps, but he only finished 2. Okay, then why would you frame it like "I deleted the 20 map wad i was working on"?

Of course, no one showed interest in working with a newbie, who was being misleading on purpose, so what does he do? He starts his shitty CP dev thread on the same day, of course. And it's a total disaster as you may expect.

Hey, destituteamn431 here. I was working on a 20 map pack based around time travel and then... I delete all of my stuff so I could set up a way to dualboot linux mint with XP (which I didn't even do) So now I'm doing this because I feel like. Anyhow, to time for the rules

Yeah, we know who you are, we can see who's posting the thread. This is actually the second time he introduces himself, after he added his nickname in the subtitle of the thread as well. I'm already getting the "I'm thinking too highly of myself, despite never releasing anything" vibes from this dude... this is Doomguy999 level of delusion here.

But what is this? Now he's saying that he deleted his maps on purpose, not accidentally, to do some Linux/XP shit? It never occurred to him to make an external backup, eh? Yeah, he's lying, 100%. It's also a bad idea to be saying shit like "I'm starting this project, just because i feel like it". It's a sign that you don't take the project seriously.

The WAD is going to be separated into 8 dissident episodes with 3 regular levels and a secret level. Each episode can only have ONE contributor, and he must stick to the episode's theme and the genre of metal associated with that theme (You can use preexisting songs in midi form or create an original midi based of the genre) Custom Textures are OK but no Custom Weapons or Enemies. This wad is going to be in UZDoom with the IWAD of Doom 2 and a compleval of 21, so go nuts on the levels.

Where do i begin with this...

Eight episodes? First thing you've ever attempted, and you're going for 8 episodes? Bad idea. Another example of when clueless inexperience nobodies, decide to shoot for the stars from the get go, because maybe they've played a few maps from Eviternity and now want to outdo it. I don't think i've ever heard of a 32 map megawad with 8 episodes. Maybe because it's kinda dumb to do so many? It means each episode will only have 4 maps, which is not enough to really establish them. But he also wants a secret map in each episode, so that's even worse. That's 25 percent of the megawad locked behind secrets, while the regular episodes will consist of only 3 maps each.

He reassures that no one will join this project, by requesting only one mapper per episode. That's right, if you want to join this project, you need to build 4 maps for this guy. We've seen people join questionable projects, working their asses off to make their maps, and then getting their time wasted when the projects get abandoned. Well, multiply that by 4. No one is joining this farce, guaranteed, not even the most naive mappers out there.

The more i read, the more this thing reminds of those Idea Guy Projects, where “the leads” don't do anything and just demand others to follow their ideas for their personal dream wads. Now he's going to tell you to stick to specific music themes, on top of the visual ones.

MBF21 for UZDoom? Come on... He clearly doesn't know even the basics of mapping formats and the ports they cover. Goes for UZDoom, because that one is supposed to run everything, so he basically is covering his ass, instead of admitting that he doesn't know which ports are compatible with MBF21.

And of course, he repeats the same mistake others did before him. He opens the door for anyone to bring custom textures, so they can build his requested themes. He clearly doesn't have the ability to create a texture pack for his ambitious idea, but he doesn't know that he'd still have to compile all textures and maps at the end. That right there is a guaranteed fail, because from what we've seen so far from him, i bet he doesn't have the necessary Slade knowledge to do so. Lucky for him, he'll never get any maps submitted, so he won't have to come up with some "personal life drama" excuse for the inevitable cancellation of the project.

Let's see the moronic episode themes now:

Episode 1: Theme:Present Genre:Thrash Contributor: destituteamn431

Is anyone surprised that this idiot is taking the most generic and easy to make theme for himself? Hey buddy, why dodn't you take the 1920's, the Renaissance, Rome, or the fucking Stone Age? This is exactly what that moron EPICALLL did, as he took the generic tech base theme for himself and came up with the most convoluted and nonsensical themes for others to bang their heads over. This should be mandatory rule: If you come up with a complex theme, you, as the project lead, should be the first to make a map for it.

Episode 2: Theme: 1920's Genre: Industrial Contributor: Open

Okay, i can understand the present day theme, city levels and shit, but what the fuck is 1920s supposed to be? 1920's where? US, Europe? Africa? Asia? Doom 2 in Rural Only? How about some description, since you can't be bothered in a million years to provide the custom textures, or an example map, as any proper project lead should do!

Episode 3: Theme:Renaissance Genre: Symphonic Metal Contributor: Open
Episode 4: Theme: Dark Ages Genre: Doom Contributor: Open
Episode 5: Theme: Rome Genre: War Metal Contributor: Open
Episode 6: Theme: Stone Age Genre: Proto-Metal Contributor: Open
Episode 7: Theme: Fucked Up Present Genre: Crossover Thrash Contributor: Open
Episode 8: Theme: Hell Genre: Death Thrash Contributor: Open

Renaissance and Rome? I guess you mean Ancient Rome? Same point applies, no description, no examples, no custom textures. Why should anyone bother working on it? The fucking Stone Age? Are you kidding me? How do you envision this?

A Fucked Up Present? What is this? Care to clarify? Wouldn't the “normal present” from Episode 1 already be fucked up, since there are demons from hell running around? Explain your themes, you clueless motherfucker! Or, i don't know, prove you can build a basic map, before you jump to making community projects.

It's strange because this is not the type of newbie that registers today and starts a CP tomorrow. He's been on the forum for over a year, but clearly couldn't be bothered to use that time and learn a little bit about the process of leading CPs... like opening and reading some threads. When I see someone with 400 days on DW asking people to submit maps via email, that makes it clear to me that the guy has not only never opened a proper CP dev thread to see how it's done, but he couldn't be bothered to do anything. He doesn't give a crap, he just wants to fool people to build shit for him.

He's probably not a real Doom fan, has discovered the game through MyHouse, or RAMP in 2025 and now wants to come in and role-play as a “developer”, while skipping the important steps to improvement, starting with a playthrough of the original IWADs. Take for example the fact that he doesn't yet have a single slot taken, let alone a submitted map for this "project", and yet he's already talking with DavidN so he can set up a RAMPART level hub for it. I hope David is smart enough not to waste his time with this moron. Also, i'm almost sure you need GZ/UZDoom for the RAMPART, but i could be wrong...

Shit! I got so distracted by the other crap in this "project", that i skipped over the fact we yet again don't have a submission deadline. Well, that is the final nail in the coffin for this turd.

I uploaded the FDA to Litterbox, since uploading to Catbox is disabled currently (so it will expire in 3 days). I tested it, and it is not an empty ZIP file anymore : litter.catbox.moe/oir2g4x5z99yk37u.zip

I do not think you should be worried about being able to see a future area. You can ensure the monsters do not see the player early, by putting them in untextured pits, and popping them up when the player gets there.
It feels like you have majorly restricted yourself, with the entire temple perimeter becoming one giant arena. Because now you have to make very flat areas, so they all connect neatly at the grand reveal, and these areas are already huge. To have them all connect at the end would make for an enormous arena, that would make the flatness even more apparent, and to make it engaging would require you to make a slaughterfest, to fill all that huge empty space. I do not have anything against slaughterfests, but I do not think you know what you are setting yourself up for, because the map so far has not really struck me as slaughterish.

To me, this looks pretty cursed from the starts.
destituteamn431 Fucks Up The Community Project Concept

Also the Google Mail & Drive usage is somewhat common even for nowadays. impping II! would be an personal example of mine where a Google table was used to track all incoming maps and you had to publish your maps on your fucking Google Drive and send in the link on the thread which was rather strange since with the first one you had to only package the wad with whatever else you had in mind as per usual. Some troonie "quirk-up" I presume.

On a side note how hasn't Troonworld (or Dreadworld, both work flawlessy) banned you yet? I'm guessing those not as vocal as me are spared? I'm not quite sure, be lucky that something is protecting you from the retardth of the trooneration circle jerk.
