On Sokka, non-benders and Katara not being out of water.
Disclaimer: This is an angry rant. You are allowed to disagree or rant back at me in the comments, just don't be a dick about it. I apologize in advance because you will see excessive punctuation, profanity and me getting more and more unhinged. Spoilers ahead.
I have to begin by saying that this movie is an absolute visual delight (props to all the artists!) and it was a lot of fun to meet the characters again, this time as adults. I was laughing and crying and yelling by myself at home almost the entire time, so I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy myself.
However, one of the reasons for my yelling was also frustration LOL
I watched it twice, and once the excitement of having new video content after decades cooled off, the problems became much louder in my perception and no amount of nostalgia can make me unsee them.
It felt like seeing old friends for the first time in years, but then also being upset at what these friends have been doing with their lives. Not to sound like a disappointed parent, but… where did all the potential go?
Several points upset me, but in this post I want to talk about a few that are interconnected.
Characters weren't explored properly.
This movie is about Aang dealing with the loss of his people. That focus isn't a problem in itself, but it became one, because unfortunately the screenplay didn't manage to deal well with the rest of the characters in the short time it had.
As a consequence, we ended up with characters that felt quite flat. I'd say Zuko feels the most similar to the OG, but he had such few lines that it might just be my mind filling in the gap. Suki was removed completely without even a mention, which was a pity.
But the worst effect of that was seen in Sokka, in my opinion, because:
2. Sokka-who?
Who was that caricature of Sokka on my screen?? This movie did my guy so dirty.
Sokka is introduced working alone in a messy workshop. The only people interested in him are a handful of kids who don't know who he is or why the Avatar would consider him a valuable ally.
Are you freaking kidding me?
Sokka was arguably the smartest member of the Gaang. He was the guy with the plan, the pragmatist, the person who kept things on schedule, who planned WHOLE INVASIONS at sixteen! He was brave, strategic, and skilled!
And you want to convince me that this guy spends his days tinkering away with weird prototypes that only half-work? That he works alone instead of with a team? You are telling me that no one invited him to work on anything with any prestige or importance even though he was on the hotspot of the group of rebels who ended the war and set the stage for how the new world would be rebuilt?
You really want to convince me that Sokka was so sidelined that a group of random kids has easy access to pester him during the day, and he has to paint exaggerated pictures of his very real and very heroic actions during the war just to make himself feel better?
Oh, and this is, apparently, also someone who, despite being the Tech Guy, has never learned how to pilot an airship even though one of his best friends is the literal Fire Lord and owns a whole fleet.
Worse, you want me to believe that the guy who was a leader on two separate invasions, saved his friends’ lives multiple times, and made fun of Fire Lord Ozai to his face, now can only go into panic mode when a crisis presents? This guy has been through a literal war!
And since we're talking consistency in characterization: Sokka likes to shop and has great sense of style and YOU PUT HIM IN ILL FITTING CLOTHES /screams/
He's supposed to be 29 and they tried to keep him an awkward teenager that, I'd argue, he never even was in the first place. Everything was meant to reduce him to comic relief and it is such.a.waste. Sokka is plenty funny originally, with all of his other characteristics in place.
He isn't allowed a single heroic moment in the movie without it being undermined in some way. The one moment he is treated the same as the other heroes is when they are beaten by Tagah, that's it.
The crisis in the ship? “He steered with his feet” – Why? Why do all the others get their big moments of contribution to solve the crisis and Sokka's has to be something that gets him laughed at?
I kid you not, during the ship crisis, here is how the rest of the gang is shown:
Focused, strong, putting their strength and skill to impressive use. Katara goes biblical and pulls a Moses.
Meanwhile, this is Sokka in that same situation:
…
Oh, for crying out loud!
And if anyone says this is because Sokka is The Funny One, I will remind you that a character can be funny without being made the butt of the joke every time.
Because it gets worse. Later on, there's the fight in Republic City, when he disappears early on, having fallen into a storehouse, just to show up later on an absolutely OUTRAGEOUS scene where lobotomized Katara says:
Water is everywhere YOU LEARNED THIS AT FOURTEEN!!! it was a major plot point and everything Where is Master Katara???? Has the hair-straightening treatment she's been using caused her brain damage? Who is this impostor?
The water you just used is still in the air. You're in the middle of a city where people 100% have water around. And are you gonna tell me NONE OF THESE PEOPLE ARE SWEATING? there are two sweaty shirtless hunks right beside you, are you pretending not to see so you won't be tempted?
What the hell was this scene, honestly?
Why would anyone announce any weakness out loud when cornered by enemies? And, I'm sorry, why did the others stop fighting? Was Toph out of earth to bend? Was Zuko out of fire? Were they waiting for mommy's permission?
It's obvious that this atrocity of a scene was just the set-up to give room for Sokka to come “save the day” with the water bombs and I can't even begin to express how mad that makes me.
His workshop is implied to be in the South Pole. Are you telling me he built this in a few minutes in the middle of a fight while the city was on fire and people needed help evacuating? Someone please give this man his sword and his personality back.
Balloon water bombs are things kids play with. They might have thrown The Denied off balance, but they didn't do any real damage:
They only became a real threat once the water got in the hands of a bender:
Also you cannot convince all that water came from those balloons. Did Katara look at Toph and remember that time they were in prison and that she can pull water from the air? Did that come from all the women looking at Zuko shirtless?
“But he's not a bender, what did you want him to do?”
Things like these:
Which still gave us funny moments like these:
The OG series managed to give Sokka plenty of truly heroic moments without the need for this kind of cheap device that does nothing but nerf a genuinely strong character.
Which is why I say that this treatment of Sokka was absolutely a decision. One they didn't have to make.
4. The non-bender situation
How ironic is it that in a movie where the “bad guys” are non-benders, who believe the only way to get power is by getting bending, the writers give such an infantilizing treatment to the only non-bender of the Gaang?
None of the other character is treated like that. Even Aang who's still disapointingly immature is not infantilized like this.
There was no resolution to that plot point either. Once again the writers are not quite able to resolve this problem, and I don't even mean give a solution in universe, I mean that in the narrative, there's no direction given to this problem, not even a decision or policy that is wrong in the long run but at least moves the narrative along on that front.
We have a scene in the credits where some of the Denied seem to be doing community service? It is unclear. And we have that girl becoming an Air Acolyte, but that's it.
And then there's Tagah, who Avatar Sonam had to trap in an ice sphere, creating a huge mountain, but conveniently disappears in mist and sparkles as our boy Aang recites poetry :)
It's no wonder the inequality of non-benders is a sore that festered for years and years until it exploded in Korra's days for her to deal with.
Anyway, I'm done for today. Justice for my man Sokka, he deserved better.

Dinner that evening was quieter than usual.
The sea breeze drifted through the marui as everyone gathered around the meal Neytiri had prepared. The children were exhausted from training, and for a while the only sounds were the waves outside and the occasional clink of wooden bowls.
Jake watched Lo'ak rub his sore shoulders.
"Hurts?"
Lo'ak sighed dramatically. "Everything hurts."
Neteyam smirked. "You complained the entire walk home, and you're still complaining."
"I almost drowned."
"You swallowed water."
"I swallowed a lot of water."
Jake chuckled. "You'll survive."
Lo'ak pointed across the circle.
"She swallowed more than I did."
Everyone looked at you.
You were quietly eating, still looking tired.
Jake smiled. "How's the future reef warrior doing?"
You looked up.
"...I think my ilu hated me."
Tuk giggled immediately.
"No! Yours was funny!"
"It kept throwing me off."
"It threw Lo'ak too!"
"It liked him more."
"It definitely didn't," Lo'ak muttered.
The conversation drifted naturally toward the day's training.
Jake listened with a smile while his children talked over each other, correcting details and laughing at Lo'ak's exaggerated version of events.
Neytiri watched quietly.
Then she remembered something Jake had told her the night before.
"If you want a relationship with her... stop waiting for her to come to you."
So...
She tried.
She looked toward Neteyam first.
"You learned to breathe beneath the water today?"
Neteyam nodded.
"A little."
"It is harder than I expected."
Neytiri smiled faintly.
"You will learn."
Then she turned toward Tuk.
"And you?"
"I stayed on my ilu!"
"You did?"
"For almost a whole minute!"
Neytiri laughed softly.
"I am proud of you."
Tuk beamed.
For a brief moment, Neytiri's eyes found yours.
"And you..."
You looked up politely.
"...Did you enjoy training?"
You hesitated.
"It was alright."
"Jake said you were thrown from your ilu many times."
"...Yeah."
"Why?"
You shrugged.
"I don't know."
"Were you afraid?"
"A little."
"You must trust the animal."
"...Okay."
The conversation died.
Neytiri tried again.
"Did Tsireya explain tsaheylu well?"
"Yeah."
"What did you think of her teaching?"
"It was good."
"And Aonung?"
You blinked once.
"...He's annoying."
Lo'ak burst into laughter.
"Finally, something we agree on."
Even Jake smiled.
Neytiri waited for you to continue.
You didn't.
You simply returned to eating.
She tried again.
"What did you learn today?"
"How to balance."
"...Anything else?"
"...No."
She frowned slightly.
"There must have been more."
"There was."
"...Will you tell me?"
You lifted your eyes.
"I already did."
Then you quietly continued eating.
The conversation moved on without you.
Neytiri remained silent.
It wasn't that you were rude.
You answered every question.
But only enough to end the conversation.
Short answers.
No stories.
No excitement.
No details.
The exact opposite of how you spoke to Jake.
She watched you laugh quietly a few minutes later when Lo'ak insisted the ilu had targeted him personally.
You had plenty to say.
Just...
Not to her.
The realization stung more than she expected.
---
The next morning, the village was already awake when the Sully children headed toward the shoreline.
Tsireya waved enthusiastically as she spotted you all.
"You came!"
Lo'ak groaned.
"I had no choice."
"You'll thank me later."
"I won't."
You smiled faintly before following your siblings into the water.
Behind you, Neytiri watched until the group disappeared toward the reef.
Only then did she turn in another direction.
Toward Ronal's marui.
---
Ronal was already working when Neytiri arrived.
She was grinding herbs with slow, practiced movements, never looking up as footsteps stopped outside.
"I know you are there."
Neytiri stepped inside.
"So..."
Ronal finally lifted her head.
"...The forest woman."
"Neytiri."
"The Tsahìk."
The two women regarded one another in silence.
Neither smiled.
Neither bowed.
Respect existed.
Warmth did not.
Ronal returned to her work.
"What brings you here?"
Neytiri crossed her arms.
"I have come to speak about my daughter."
Ronal continued crushing herbs.
"I assumed as much."
"You have been spending a great deal of time with her."
"I have."
"Too much."
That made Ronal stop.
She slowly set the stone pestle down.
Only then did she meet Neytiri's eyes.
"Too much?"
"She comes here every day."
"She learns."
"She avoids her family."
Ronal's expression remained calm.
"No."
"She avoids you."
The words landed with uncomfortable accuracy.
Neytiri's jaw tightened.
"You encourage it."
"I do not."
"She speaks of you constantly."
Ronal remained silent.
"She listens to you."
Silence.
"She obeys you."
Still nothing.
Finally, Neytiri spoke the words that had been building inside her for days.
"I want you to stay away from her."
The marui became completely still.
Even the breeze seemed to stop.
Ronal stared at Neytiri for several long moments before asking quietly,
"...Why?"
"Because she is my daughter."
"No."
Ronal's voice was calm.
"That answers who she belongs to."
She took one step closer.
"It does not answer my question."
Neytiri's ears flattened.
"You are replacing her family."
Ronal's eyes hardened.
"I replaced no one."
"You have."
"I taught the child who walked into my marui asking to learn."
"You encouraged her attachment."
Ronal let out a slow breath.
"No."
"I accepted the child who kept arriving."
Neytiri looked away for just a second.
"She barely speaks to me anymore."
Ronal studied her carefully.
"When did she stop?"
Neytiri frowned.
"...What?"
"When."
Silence.
Ronal didn't raise her voice.
She didn't need to.
"Was it after she met me?"
Neytiri couldn't answer.
Because she knew it hadn't been.
Ronal continued quietly.
"Or... did it happen years before you ever reached these shores?"
Neytiri's chest tightened.
Ronal's expression softened only slightly.
"You believe I took something from you."
Another pause.
"I did not."
She looked directly at Neytiri.
"I found something you had already let fall."
The words struck harder than Neytiri expected.
For the first time since entering the marui...
She had no response.
Ronal picked up the pestle once more.
"I will not stay away from her."
Neytiri's eyes flashed.
"You refuse?"
"I refuse to punish a child because her mother arrived too late."
Silence settled heavily between them.
Ronal's voice remained steady.
"If you wish to be closer to your daughter..."
She looked up one final time.
"...Then go to her."
Another pause.
"Do not come to me."
Neytiri stood motionless.
She had come expecting an argument.
Instead...
She had been forced to confront the truth she had spent years avoiding.

Jason Todd—The inside of his knees
Sunday nights have a shape to them, in your apartment: Dimed lights, the subtlety of the particular hush that settles in around 1 a.m, a can of beer that’s too big to not count as a keg being passed between you and your boyfriend like the concept of separate glasses had never been invented, a forgotten movie humming in the background until the soft buzz of Jason’s snoring tears tiny cracks through the sullen air in your apartment.
That's what Sunday is supposed to be.
Foolishly Confidently, you had held tightly onto the hope that tonight would be like that as well.

Sun filtered through the curtains; the unbearable heat prickling limbs tangled over limbs beneath silk bedsheets. A pair of arms rested around your waist, face comfortably pulled into the familiar build of your shoulder. Your inner thighs ached incredibly, the skin reddened and littered with vague imprints of teeth marks. A mess of clothes pooled at the edge of the bed, lace and cotton all together in a pile of laundry you’d have to do later.
A ‘good morning’ wasn’t enough for a welcome to the man wrapped around you — hell, an ‘I love you’ even less. The alarm rang on the nightstand in an annoying pitch, a groan exhaled from Jason’s lips as he reached over your body to turn the object off. “Sorry about that,” he whispered, sniffling his morning grogginess away. It prompted a shaky laugh from your lips, silenced by Jason’s mouth on your own in a soft kiss. Both at an awkward angle, he opted for laughing along with you, tracing circles on your side with bare pressure. It was clear his eyes were full of adoration for only you, glimmering surprisingly bright for someone who described himself as anything but a lover (proved to be incorrect by your current state).
“Never thought I’d wake up with someone so pretty on my bed,” he teases, kissing the curve of your shoulder with that toothy smile anyone would easily fall in love with. You turn to face him in bed, bare chest pressed to bare chest, sunlight hitting your cheek perfectly in his sight. “Flattery won’t get you any breakfast, Red.”
“Is it really flattery if it’s true?”
You shrug, head sinking into the pillows. If he’d learnt anything throughout the course of your relationship, it was to be quiet and look for all of the tiny details you’d leave without noticing. Chewing on your lip as you’re doing now, for example, prompted him to reach for the glass of water at the bedside table, bringing it close to your mouth. The glass had remnants of perspiration from the time it’d spent in the bedroom since late hours, having been up doing your other activities and light cleanup.
His fingers drag along the edge of your jaw, tracing letters to the side of your face. You feel the outline of a ‘J’, then an ‘A’, and you knew where it was headed. Just like the singular letter carved into his cheek in scarred artistry, he managed tiny and harmless scratches with his nails to pale your skin with his name.
The bedsheets rustle as he sits up, pressing his back to the wall and exhaling a loud puff, shoulders slumping. “You feeling alright?” You ask, blinking up at him. The way your eyelashes flutter always manages to make his heart beat faster — that look broke him inside, kind and loving beyond explanation, a stare he never believed to be worthy of. Maybe it was the softness of your features, but he could never muster a proper explanation for it. “Never better, sweetheart.”
His digits tangle in your bedhead, ruffling the already messy locks without thinking of it. All the experience in the world never could have prepared him for your affections, yet here he was, accepting it better than the last bullet that lodged into his chest.
“You’re beautiful.”
You swallow. “Again with the flattery.”
“I mean it, baby. I really, really mean it. Couldn’t ask for any better view than you in bed like this.”
“I look like a mess.”
“My mess,” he quips, trying to hide the beautiful pearls of teeth he had.
You clutch the bedsheets and sit up, scoffing softly. “Are you getting sappy with me right now?” It’s a gentle tease that follows up with him rolling his eyes, the playful sarcasm in your voice leading him to glance at your lips, sassiness getting the best of him.
“I know you’re not talking to me like that when there are bite marks on your thighs,” he laughs, placing his hand dangerously close to your unmentionables, pinching some skin much too near to your inner thigh. You squirm, swatting his hand and leaning the complete opposite direction, working your way to getting out of bed.
Jason scrambles to grab your wrist, pulling you down against the mattress you’d sworn suffered last night, pinning you down easily. “I’m not about to play cat and mouse with you at eight in the morning.” “I don’t expect you to,” smiling, you bite your bottom lip and let it slide against your teeth.
“Something tells me you kinda do,” he squints, giving your underwear a quick and harmless tug, pressing kisses down your neck. “Don’t start,” you complain, the contact tickling your skin. His fingers find your ribs, grazing the soft skin with utter devotion, lips eventually finding the vastness of your décolletage. “C’mon, you like it when I start.”
“Do I?” You tap your chin with your index finger, making a pensive gesture.

The subway was always dirty. Not just because of the worn-out cars or the permanent smell of metal, but because of the incessant murmur of other people’s thoughts that mixed with the hum of the air conditioning and the grinding of the tracks. It was a noise that never quite disappeared.
