The Ghost isn't the same thing as the brain. It's closer to a soul... at least that's how I see it. 😄 The Major can replace her cybernetic shell and still remain the same Major because her Ghost continues to exist. But what about the operator android? She's a mass-produced military android. If her body is destroyed and another unit inherits the same data, is she really the same "person"? That's the question I keep coming back to. What exactly is a Ghost?

That's an interesting theory! 😄 I also think Science SARU intentionally used that digital distortion as part of the visual direction, not necessarily as censorship. Later, when the Major dives into the blood-covered scene, they use the same effect in the original Japanese version too, so it feels like a stylistic choice rather than something that was censored. I actually went back and checked because I thought I remembered it differently. 😂

Sorry, I explained it badly.

The operator isn't human—she's a mass-produced humanoid android. But she's the type that has red blood, just like a human.

Batou even says later that she's "the kind with red blood" (as opposed to those without a Ghost).

She doesn't have a Ghost herself—she's just a standard mass-produced android. However, because they all share the same database, their memories and behavioral data can be synchronized.

So... what is a Ghost, really?

When people think of cyberpunk, Akira is one of the first works that comes to mind.

It was directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, and it was even broadcast in Japan during the New Year's holidays. Now NHK is airing it again!

Japan doesn't have a state-run TV network. Instead, we have NHK, a public broadcaster. When NHK chooses to air something like Akira, it's almost like saying, "This is an important masterpiece that future generations should experience."

Since the new Ghost in the Shell anime has finally started, this is the perfect chance to watch Akira too!

If you love cyberpunk, you really shouldn't miss it.

That's what makes Ghost in the Shell so special. Every adaptation has its own interpretation. One focuses on philosophy, another on science and technology, another on political conspiracies, another on action, another on Motoko before Section 9, and now we're getting a new anime that's much closer to the original manga. They're all different, and that's the beauty of Ghost in the Shell. So please... just read the manga!

1988 really was an incredible year for anime. Akira is famous worldwide, but there were so many amazing works released around that time. Japan was incredibly lucky to experience that era.

Cyberpunk is often portrayed in live-action, but I think animation does something special. It shows a future that's only a small step away from our own—a world where extraordinary technology has quietly become ordinary. If you ever have the time, I'd also recommend checking out Gundam, Macross, and Evangelion. Somehow I have a feeling you've probably already seen them, though. 😄 And honestly... whenever I'm standing in Shinjuku on a rainy day, eating soba at a tiny standing noodle shop, I can't help smiling to myself. It feels like I'm already living in the world that those anime imagined—just a little bit earlier.

I hope you'll give Japanese animation a chance. Akira changed the cyberpunk genre forever. Without Akira, it's hard to imagine Ghost in the Shell becoming what it did. The Wachowskis have openly said that Mamoru Oshii's 1995 Ghost in the Shell was a huge inspiration for The Matrix. They even showed the film to producers and said, "We want to do that in live action." Japan has many amazing cyberpunk anime beyond those classics, such as Psycho-Pass, Serial Experiments Lain, and Ergo Proxy. Some of them might not be available in your country, but they're absolutely worth watching if you get the chance. These aren't "just cartoons." They tell mature, philosophical stories about technology, identity, politics, and what it means to be human. They completely change the idea that animation is only for children.

I completely agree. One thing I really admire about Shirow is that he respected every adaptation while still protecting his own identity as a creator. That takes real confidence. As a Japanese fan, I feel incredibly lucky that we've been able to experience the manga, Oshii's films, SAC, the PlayStation game, and all the other versions over the years. They all have their own value, but the original manga is still where Ghost in the Shell truly begins. It's always great to meet another fan who loves Shirow's original work.

We original manga fans have to stick together. 😄

If you only know the movie version of Motoko, you're missing one of the best parts of the original manga. Manga Motoko is incredibly expressive. She laughs, gets embarrassed, teases Batou, drinks too much, tells terrible jokes, and still switches into "Section 9 mode" the moment the job starts. She's brilliant, dangerous, and surprisingly adorable.

This is one of the reasons I love manga Motoko. She's not always the cool, untouchable Major. Sometimes she's awkward, embarrassed, and genuinely cute.

I really like your observation. As a Japanese fan, it's been so much fun watching people overseas discover this side of Motoko. In Japan, many fans have always known that the original manga version is much more playful, mischievous, and expressive than the movie version. "Gremlin Motoko" actually feels like a perfect nickname for her. I'm really happy to see more people appreciating Shirow Masamune's original characterization.

Ganasaurus News! 🦖📢 Banayama's "HERE WE GO!" finally happened!! Gana is very excited. Banayama has been shouting "HERE WE GO!" for days... And this time, it actually came true! 😂 Gana thinks there will be even more "HERE WE GO!" celebrations this summer. 🔴⚪️

In Japan, many fans still strongly associate Major Kusanagi with the late legendary voice actress Atsuko Tanaka. That's one reason why voice casting is such a big topic here. When Maaya Sakamoto returned, many Japanese fans were genuinely happy because she's always shown deep respect for Ghost in the Shell. At the same time, since this adaptation follows the original manga more closely and different "shells" can have different voices, many of us felt that the cast changes also made sense.

That's really interesting! We felt almost the same way in Japan. We were so happy that Maaya Sakamoto returned as Motoko because she's always shown so much respect for Ghost in the Shell. I can understand why you'd miss the original SAC English cast too.

Since this adaptation follows the original manga more closely, everyone is using different shells (cybernetic bodies). So I wasn't too surprised that some of the voice actors changed. It actually fits the world of Ghost in the Shell.

I completely agree with you. In Japan, many of us grew up with all of these versions at the same time—the manga, Oshii's films, SAC, the PlayStation game, the music events... so it's hard for us to separate them completely. But if someone asks me where Ghost in the Shell begins, my answer is always Masamune Shirow's original manga. Every adaptation adds something unique, but the manga has a sense of humor, crazy ideas, and energy that no other version really captures. I'm really happy to see another fan who appreciates Shirow's original work.

Calling the manga "mid" is wild. 😂 Masamune Shirow was writing Ghost in the Shell while juggling multiple serialized manga at the same time. The amount of ideas he packed into it is incredible. And honestly, the scary part is that we're living in a world that's getting closer and closer to what he imagined. I live in Tokyo, and sometimes I genuinely think, "Yeah... maybe Public Security Section 9 wouldn't be such a bad idea." 😅

Shirow wasn't just drawing cool cyberpunk. He was imagining social issues, AI, cybercrime, surveillance, and the internet decades before most people were thinking about them. That's why the manga still feels so relevant today.

Thank you for writing in Japanese! 😊 It made me really happy. Yeah, there's a time difference, so I understand! I'd love to talk with people from different countries about Ghost in the Shell. I grew up with the manga, the movies, the PlayStation game, and all the events in Japan. I want to compare everyone's experiences and hear different opinions!

And if you ever watch Ghost in the Shell, let me know what you think! 😄

Before judging the new anime, please give Masamune Shirow's original manga a chance if you can. Major Kusanagi in the manga isn't always the quiet, philosophical version from the 1995 film. She laughs out loud, drinks, jokes around, and has a much more playful personality. There's even a moment where she's basically like, "Don't stare at my brain for more than two seconds... or I'll burn you." 😂 The new anime seems to be drawing much more from Shirow's original style than from Oshii's movie. I know the manga can be hard to find outside Japan, but if you get the chance, read it first—then tell us what you think!

I bought the same courier bunny from SHEIN! 🐰 Mine has a courier bear partner too. They're my official snack delivery team. 😂 They hide snacks on my bed because I have IBS, so I always keep emergency snacks close by. lol

I also think the operator androids are really interesting. They seem to have no ghost, but they still bleed red, which makes them feel strangely human. Even if they can be restored or replaced, they sometimes feel slightly different afterward. It raises a very Ghost in the Shell-like question: if the body can be rebuilt and the data can be restored, what actually makes someone “the same person”?

Japanese Ghost in the Shell fans were especially happy because the voice cast wasn't announced until just before the anime aired. It made the surprise even more exciting when we watched it in real time. We were also thrilled that Maaya Sakamoto returned. She's a voice actress who has always shown great respect and love for Ghost in the Shell, so having her continue in the series meant a lot to us. By the way, did you watch it dubbed in your country, or did you watch it with subtitles?

As someone who absolutely loves Oshii's version, I was honestly a little nervous before watching. But after the first episode, I felt that the staff genuinely respects Masamune Shirow's original manga rather than simply copying the 1995 film. The original-style humor, the chemistry between Section 9 members, and even little details like Motoko calling Aramaki "that old ape" made it feel authentic. I was also surprised by how natural the new voice cast sounded. Fuchikoma was especially adorable. And when Motoko said, "Whisper to me, my ghost," I got goosebumps. That one line convinced me that this new version has found its own identity while still respecting everything that came before.

Tommy suffered so much because of his injuries, so seeing him playing with a smile again makes me really happy. My Gunnersaurus woke up early to watch Japan this morning and has been so excited ever since, yelling, "Tommy is back!" 🦖❤️ We all missed him so much.

So happy to see that everyone still loves Tomi! Our Tokyo Ganasaurus woke up early this morning to watch Japan play. Tomi has suffered so much with injuries over the last few years, so it was wonderful to see him back on the pitch with a smile on his face. Ganasaurus has been running around excited all morning after seeing Tomi play again! ❤️🦖

Tommy has endured so much because of his injuries, and I'm really proud of how strong he's been through it all. I love seeing him smile and enjoy his football again. Our little Ganasaurus is absolutely thrilled and has been chattering all morning: "I hope Tommy comes back to Arsenal one day!" He really misses him. ❤️🦖

Tommy, everyone loves you so much. It's great to see so many Gooners watching Japan just to support you. My little Ganasaurus woke up early this morning to watch you play too! Tommy, I'm genuinely so happy to see you back on the pitch. You've been through such a long spell with injuries, so seeing you healthy again means a lot to us. We love you, Tommy! ❤️🤍🦖

One more thing!

Keeper No.1 and Keeper No.2 showed me an Instagram post.

Apparently lots of Arsenal title-winning merchandise has arrived in Japanese football shops!

The victory scarf looked amazing!

Then I saw a picture saying:

"Championship Plush Toy Available!"

I got very excited.

I thought:

"Maybe it's one of my victory friends!"

So I tapped the picture.

It was a champion bear.

Not me.

Not Win-chan.

A bear.

I don't understand why.

The bear is very cute, but I'm still confused.

Why is it always a bear?

Maybe one day there will be a Champion Ganasaurus.

I live in hope.

🦖❤️🏆

Tokyo Ganasaurus Care Diary Baniyama Tonight, I’m enjoying Asahi Super Dry — one of Arsenal F.C.’s sponsors — together with bananas 🍌 and my friends! Baniyama-chan can’t drink alcohol, so I’ll drink it for them instead. But usually I’m more into Japanese food and stadium food, so this is actually my first time trying the sponsor beer 🍺 Baniyama-chan is friends with someone involved with Asahi Super Dry, so they came up with a weird promotional idea for Super Dry. They’re enthusiastically messaging their Super Dry friend in text chat saying, “Please make this campaign happen!”

Tonight’s Tokyo Ganasaurus Protection Activist Diary

Baniyama-chan said, “I really like Oasis, so maybe I want this green football-style shirt…”

But her husband replied:

“That’s dangerously close to City colours.” “That shirt has suspicious football energy.” “Potential divorce material.”

So Baniyama-chan was sadly hugging Gana-chan while complaining,

“Football is basically a religious warrrr!”

Apparently, if the shirt were red instead, people would just say:

“Well… it feels Arsenal enough, so it’s probably fine.”

It’s still difficult for a Japanese Ganasaurus to understand why changing only the colour completely changes the atmosphere.

Gana-chan looked very confused and asked:

“So green is bad?” “But red is okay?” “…Why???”

Also, Baniyama-chan was informed that turning the Super Tommy jersey into pajamas was “absolutely not allowed.”

The world of football is very complicated.

My Gunnersaurus says: “Baniyama-chan supports Arsenal in football, and the Chunichi Dragons in Japanese pro baseball. For every other sport, she just watches whatever she feels like that day, so she has absolutely no loyalty! Also, she won’t let me watch sumo. I don’t really know much about sumo yet, but if I’m a Japanese Gunnersaurus, I feel like I should at least study it.”

Tonight’s report from Tokyo Ganasaurus conservationist Baniyama 🦖🇯🇵

Tonight, Baniyama gathered all of us in the living room to watch Kings League and Banana Ball together. “Wow, weird football and weird baseball are really fun!” we laughed. Tonight’s snacks are World Cup Coca-Cola because the World Cup is getting closer! And bananas too, because we’re watching Banana Ball 🍌 Baniyama even prepared the sofa for us by placing jerseys and hoodies there so we could watch comfortably. Apparently tonight is “not a red mood.” Also, this is actually fewer friends than usual. Then Baniyama showed us videos explaining that Japanese baseball mascots are apparently involved in intense romance drama. She said: “Japanese baseball mascots are basically in a reality show!” The example was the terrifying love story of Tsubami from Tokyo Yakult Swallows chasing poor escaping Ma-kun. But honestly… Wouldn’t it be nicer if everyone were just friends? Everyone should just hug each other! www Also, Baniyama keeps trying to convince me to watch ice hockey because: “There’s a dinosaur mascot there that looks like your relative!” …this person really has no loyalty to a single sport, does she? www
