Barrels of Fun today revealed their fourth title following Labyrinth, Dune and Winchester Mystery House with Bon Jovi, the company’s first music-themed game.
Based on the famed band from Sayreville, New Jersey and fronted by Jon Bon Jovi, Barrels of Fun’s is designed by the company’s ‘Chief Mischief Maker’, David Van Es with artwork by Jonathan Bergeron (a.k.a. Johnny Crap) and software by Luke Underwood.
Only a single model is being produced and it is limited to a maximum of 700 units, though this could increase if those 700 sell out within the first week of going on sale. Then, any members of the company’s Barrels Reserve loyalty scheme would be able to purchase an additional single unit.
The cost is $12,000 with an initial $2,000 deposit. Shipping is expected to begin in mid-August with production ending in May 2027 if all 700 units are built.
Let’s take a look at the cabinet and backbox.
Now let’s move on to the playfield.
Starting at the bottom apron, there is a backlit faux tape deck along a VU meter and motorised fader controls synchronised with the music.
The two main flippers are the shorter ‘lightning flippers’, so called because they have a lightning bolt pattern on the top surface. They are 1/8th-inch shorter than the regular 3-inch flippers found on almost all pinballs these days and typically are used to make it harder to control and save the ball.
There is a ‘Crowd Surf’ mini-flipper in the left outlane which can shoot a draining ball up a short jump ramp and back into play.
The biggest mechanism in the game is the Heart & Dagger sculpt which had a shot through the centre, contains a grab magnet, and can also move up and down to one of three vertical positions.
It can grab the ball, raise the mechanism to one of the two upper positions, and fling the ball backwards onto one of two wireforms.
The Heart & Dagger is one of three magnets in the game. There is another in the Backstage area which drops the ball into one of two three-ball locks, and a third magnet at the top of the orbit lane to grab the ball and drop it into a scoop which feeds the second three-ball lock.
In addition, there is a novel captive ball mechanism which sends the ball on a 360-degree wireform loop which also contains one of the game’s two spinners. Mounted above this is the Jon Bon Jovi guitar sculpt.
