I haven't used Xfce in a long time, but from what I remember each panel icon is a separate widget there instead of it having a unified system tray.

Are you on Fedora? I had this issue and couldn't uninstall because it was marked as a dependency. When I looked into it the bug of the settings menu not respecting you disabling the virtual keyboard altogether has reports going back to Fedora 41. So it seems. I saw that there was a merged bug fix related to this issue 2 weeks ago. Not sure if that will actually fix our issue but should presumably come with the next frameworks update.

I don't remember when they added the new virtual keyboard, but it started becoming problematic for me with the update that added the hold down a key "feature".

It came with a bug that changed how highlighting text and then pressing brackets\/parenthesis in Kwrite worked, normally it would just add it around the text but the bug caused it to replace the text instead. This was later fixed though.

The addition of the holding down a key feature was super annoying and I don't think you can disable it so I disabled the entire virtual keyboard to get rid of it. Can vouch for Linux Mint. I've installed it on my old relatives' computers and they have no problems with it (One of them in their 70s), and they only knew windows previously. Any of the versions are fine but I try to use Linux Mint Cinnamon first if the laptop\/pc can handle it. The other ones are more lightweight if you have a really old\/slow system. I haven't tried the debian edition yet but the other ones are ubuntu derivatives and come with some extra QoL features out of the box from what I understand, so I just use those. All the other Linux Mint versions (besides the debian edition) are basically the same, just with a different desktop environment. Linux Mint Cinnamon is like their main flagship version.

I went with Nobara, a fedora gaming fork. Note that you will have problems if you use nvidia, all AMD systems have less problems. The biggest problem with this meme distro is the tendency of the maintainers to keep reinventing the box in regards to system updates. xfs doesn't engage CoW unless an extent is actually reflinked. Being able to do zero cost cp -a backups is actually pretty great for game patches, and xfs_fsr actually works unlike btrfs defrag. It also has several GB less format overhead than btrfs.
