About

HRjak refers to a Soyjak drawing of a human resources (HR) manager poking fun at a number of stereotypes linked to the profession, primarily at HR managers ghosting candidates and wasting their time. The Soyjak drawing is based on the Anne Hathaway Zoom Call meme and features elements from other memes, such as Soyjak Awards and the I Would Never Ever Ever shirt slogan. First posted in January 2025, the image has gone viral on social media multiple times since, inspiring discourse about HR professionals and job applications.

Origin

The HRjak Soyjak drawing is based on an image of actress Anne Hathaway looking at the camera and smiling during a video conference call that was part of a 2021 episode of RuPaul's Drag Race (video[1] shown below). The meme is also known as Anne Hathaway Zoom Call.

The exact origin of the image is currently unknown. On January 28th, 2025, the Facebook[2] page Important JPEGs made the earliest discovered repost of the image. The post (shown below) garnered over 1,000 reactions and 960 shares in three months. Notably, the image features two popular Soyjak-adjascent memes, the Soyjak Award and the I Love X, But I Would Never Ever Ever Y meme.

Spread

The image went viral and spread on social media in the following weeks as multiple reposts were made on Facebook,[3] Instagram[4] X[5] and iFunny[6] in early 2025.

For example, a January 30th repost by X[5] user @380kmh garnered over 1.4 million views, 4,600 reposts and 48,000 likes in three months.

Also on January 30th, 2025, Soybooru[7] user Dino archived an alternative version of the meme used on Soyjak.party (shown below).

The Anne Hathaway version of the meme continued to spread online in February, March and April 2025. Notably, on March 28th, 2025, X[8] user @ebeggin1 made a repost that garnered over 1.8 million views, 6,400 reposts and 62,000 likes in two weeks.

The post was followed by multiple posts engaging in discourse on whether HR workers are responsible for company hiring practices and whether their reputation online is deserved.

For instance, on March 29th, 2025, X[9] user @MarxistRealism made a post defending HR professionals that received over 900 reposts and 10,000 likes in two weeks (shown below).

MarxistRealism @MarxistRealism One neat trick stupid people have pulled off in the last couple years is convincing others that women in HR are keeping you from getting hired during this recession and not the male-dominated executives who actually dictate corporate policy/strategy. I think we have a society become way too elitistic. We are obsessed with having the ""best of the best"" you are expected by companies to have 15 years of experience on a computer program that is only 5 years old and other ridiculous irrational shit cause nobosy is willing to even ETERTAIN the idea "hmm…maybe I should lower my ridiculous high standards" you can see this in the dating scene, academia and internet community moderation as well.

We are a generation that is dystopianly unwilling to temper our expectations and its making the world pretty late-stage caputalistic.

I've worked with and in my company's HR department and there are many things I could say(such as HR and TA being distinct entities, but tbh so much overlap) but one I found interesting is about why they set such high "requirements" for job ads: It helps deter those who aren't remotely qualified. 90% of the time the requirements are flexible and the hiring manager can hire you regardless if they like you enough. If you can give yourself a crash course and are confident you can BS an interview if needed, go for it.

Another reason is that apparently women are more likely than men to ignore requirements so it leads to a higher skew of female applicants. This was brought up second-hand from a conference or consultant, and was portrayed more as a feature than a bug.

its not just in elitism either you can see it in people going to a fanbase or community and expecting to never see anything even remotely "problematic" to a ridiculously fantastical degree and expect that to be a realistic expectation for example

Wojak memes and the slight undercurrent of misogyny of this suck mad ass, but going to bat for HR, a thing meant to defend companies from their employees, is certainly a choice (a bad one).
