About

CalArts is the better-known name for the California Institute of the Arts, an arts school in Valencia, California. The school has produced animators of many popular television shows. In the late 2010s, it became somewhat-notorious for teaching a signature animation style which can be found in popular television shows including Adventure Time, Steven Universe, and Gravity Falls. This has led to backlash from animation fans, as some have criticized the style for being lazy and saturating popular culture.

History

The California Institute of the Arts was founded in 1961[1] by a number of benefactors including Nelbert Murphy Chouinard, Walt Disney, Lulu Von Hagen, Thornton Ladd, and others. As of Fall 2016, the school has roughly 1,447 students and an acceptance rate of roughly 28%.

Notable Alumni

CalArts alumni include many popular actors and musicians including Dustin Hoffman, Alison Brie, David Hasselhoff, and many more.[2] Famous animators and directors to have graduated CalArts include Butch Hartman (Fairly Oddparents, Danny Phantom), Stephen Hillenburg (Spongebob Squarepants), and Kevin Lima (A Goofy Movie, Tarzan). Several Pixar animators have graduated from CalArts including Pete Docter, lead animator Monsters Inc, Up, and Inside Out. The "Pixar University" run at Pixar is said to be based on the methods taught at CalArts.

Backlash

Backlash to CalArts began spreading after the success of Adventure Time, when many popular television shows like Steven Universe, The Amazing World of Gumball, Gravity Falls, and more featured characters with similar faces featuring a bean-like and an ovular mouth (comparison image shown below). It has also been called the "Thin-line style."[3]

On social media, artists have animation fans have had polarizing opinions regarding the so-called "CalArts Style." A popular Tumblr post showing CalArts characters (and Sans from Undertale, though he is not a CalArts character) spread in 2016, gaining over 12,000 notes (shown below, left). User Ceeberoni showed silhouettes of CalArts characters (and Sans again), saying that because one could identify the characters from their silhouettes, it was good design (shown below, right).

CALARTS Unh, there are taking kids And they do things kids normaly dont do. And they al make this face Bntiant ceeberoni to anyone who buys into the "calarts style" b------- i have a game 4 u out of the characters mentioned in this image

The "Cal Arts Style" was coined in 2010 by blogger John K discussing various animation similarities between Disney films in different eras as it related to The Iron Giant.[6]

RCDart

RCDart is the artist name of Rory Cummings-Dise, an agender fan artist that had been posting on social media since at least July 2012 (example from November 2014 shown below, left). In March of 2016, they announced that they had been accepted into art school Cal Arts, which is notable as many found that their art grew significantly worse after attending the art school. Additionally, Cummings-Dise drew the ire of Tumblr users for their depictions of fictional characters twice, in March 2016 and January 2018, through respectively their depictions of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, and Finn from the 2010s Star Wars (shown below, middle and right). The former was seen as trans-fetishistic, while the latter was accused of being racist.

#CalArts Style

After the release of the trailer for Thundercats Roar in May 2018, a reboot of the Thundercats cartoon, social media users heavily of criticized it for employing the "CalArts Style." Twitter and other social media users mocked the reboot by imagining other shows being rebooted with the art style. For example, Twitter user @flipskip1 parodied the recently popular Captain America Detention meme by drawing Captain America in the style, gaining over 8,700 retweets and 35,000 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @speedosausage tweeted a parody of The Simpsons drawn in the style, gaining over 1,700 retweets and 9,000 likes (shown below, right).

Campus Closing

On June 3, 2018, the now-deleted Twitter account @ScrumpAdmin posted an image of a shooting target with a CalArts-style face drawn on it with a caption referencing the Some Of You Guys Are Alright meme. In response to this, on June 4, CalArts announced that the campus would be closed to protect students.[4] A tweet by Twitter user @isawiitchtalk about the situation gained over 800 retweets and over 2,800 likes.[5]

I think in the last year or two, there's been a "backlash to the backlash" situation where animation fans get fed up with other animation fans complaining about the "Calarts" style, telling them that a show's animation is only one piece of the puzzle, since writing and voice acting is equally important, and that people should not be so quick to write off a show because it uses an animation style many other shows use.

People have been murdered over a goddamn chicken nugget in Florida.
Your country is fucked halfway to Sunday.

ANY threat has to be taken seriously in this day and age, lest something actually happen and the school be liable for not protecting it's students.

And this "scrump" sounds like an edgy cunt with an audience still in diapers. You want a real shitposter, go to Dolan, or kmlkmljkl, or Dril.

Welp, there you fucking have it. Now I'm concerned that 4chan or some other group will continue to spam these dry threats until calarts starts teaching people how to fucking draw properly. Can't say it'll make the situation better, but somethings gotta get them to teach people armatures and other basic fundamentals of art.

I guess i'm hoping the thundercats fiasco is signalling the end of this trashy era of cartoons. Maybe then people will start studying from the classics again.

You can re-use assets, you don't have to retrain a bunch of Korean animators, you don't have to worry about retraining any American animators. Especially at CN, writers, directors, animators, story boarders are thrown from project to project. Keeping things consistent and familiar saves time and saves money. Most of these shows with this style are on very limited budgets.
As much as I would really love to see anything different, if CN is still given the budget it is given, this style might become their standard. Money rules the animation world, not art.

Although on reflection, Thundercats itself was a trend-chaser. He-Man was the flavor of the month still and it was still totally in fashion when Thundercats caught on. So if anything, Thundercats Roar chasing after Gravity Falls only makes it more faithful to the original

                                                                                                  (I'm getting downvoted, aren't I?)

Yeah, I have a feeling that, at least in the specific case of Thundercats, "Calarts style" can be summed up as "I am unwilling to admit that my consumer taste is no longer the driving source of profit in the market and am willing to blame neopotism and chasing after market trends for things I don't like becoming popular".

Although on reflection, Thundercats itself was a trend-chaser. He-Man was the flavor of the month still and it was still totally in fashion when Thundercats caught on. So if anything, Thundercats Roar chasing after Gravity Falls only makes it more faithful to the original

Like others have said, the final product so rudimentary artist consistency isn't needed because a 9-year old could accurately draw the collection of amorphous blobs that is much of CN's lineup since Adventure Time in 2010. I'm glad the CalArts style is finally getting criticism. I was quite annoyed during the Adventure Time craze of 2010 because, as a former artist, I immediately notice things like animation tricks when a studio tries to save money, and I visibly roll my eyes when low-effort work gets unconditional praise by those who can't help but be entertained by it because they can't recognize laziness because they've never drawn themselves (which I understand). Some examples of good art that have earned my respect because I can see the effort and talent put into them can be found in my comment below, to avoid the 1500 character limit.

This green-haired female is comprised of many complex lines, curves, and shapes that overlap each other. Her hair and facial features have specific proportions that, if drawn poorly, will result in something ghastly. For example, the tip of her chin here is way to the left of the center of her body from the viewer's POV, because she is facing away from the viewer. If some kid tried to draw this, they would likely screw it up badly. And her bangs deserve nothing but high levels of respect.

I've always respected Stephen Hillenburg because drawing Spongebob not easy. While his torso and legs are easy enough to draw, what I'm talking about is his head. To mimic a real-life sponge, Spongebob's head is a "square-like" shape with very specific dips and crests that are difficult to get right if you don't want your picture to end up looking BAD. The real problem is using it for something like a Thundercats spinoff, since it's a complete 180 from the serious tone and art style established by both the original series and its 2011 reboot.

Go watch a Bob Clampett cartoon, or Tex Avery, or a Classic Disney cartoon like The Art of Skiing, or Mickey Mouse and the Mad Doctor. If you prefer stuff with more dialogue and less slapstick, watch a Chuck Jones cartoon. Even the low-budget cartoons were better, like Popeye. They had no Koreans drawing inbetweens for them. They were masters of momentum and form. And above all, they were very funny. Everything they did was miles ahead of the stuff today. They had no giants with shoulders to stand on. These were the same men that invented the art form, and mastered it. They have not been surpassed.

Everyone on the Internet has entrenched themselves into a bunker, unwilling to ever budge, doing nothing but flinging shit at all the other bunkers. They think they're in the right, and everyone else is in the wrong – they never consider that they might not know everything themselves. They never consider what the other one is really saying, other than that he disagrees and therefore is a retard. Therefore, nothing ever changes. No lessons are ever learned. There's no point to any of it.

Why do they even bother? Do they really think they can make some really sweet and clever argument to penetrate the immovable concrete walls of the other guy's mind? Would it not be better to just go outside, or whatever else they find fun, than to carry on this mindless, senseless charade of a "debate"?

So long as you keep up those impenetrable barriers of yours, so long as you tell me I'm not going to change your opinion, you might as well just vacate the comments section. The shit you fling is no more clever than the shit anyone else here flings.

You should always be ready to change your opinion if someone throws in a particularly great and well-thought argument. But no one is ever ready to do that.

                                                                                                                                  • Pyroniusburn - 8 years ago

Those where released in theaters with month's in between the previous, modern cartoons have to put out episodes weekly (or whatever inane schedule CN decides). Cartoons need to be efficient, and that means some cut corners. This is true for shows today and in the past. As for these never being surpassed, while subjective, I would argue films like Paprika, Loving Vincent, and The Secret of Nimh have surpassed previous animation.

Loving Vincent, while an impressive undertaking, is unfortunately still just rotoscoped. So yes, it is an impressive collection of paintings, but not good animation.

You're right, they have been surpassed in regards to technical mastery of animation. I was thinking of a somewhat more specific sort of cartoon, but I didn't specify. When it comes to short comedy cartoons, they have not been surpassed. And I would indeed say that comparing Adventure Time to Tom and Jerry is fair. They are paid for by the producer, a contract is signed ordering a number of cartoons, there is a deadline, a bunch of cartoons are produced, and they are broadcast. You can't excuse them by saying "It makes sense that they're crappy, because they have to make more in a shorter amount of time." Yes, when you rush things, they are not as good. That's what I'm saying. We are in agreement.

No one else. Just the main character. Don't know why. And that's probably why you'll never see my series see the light of day.

how about we just call it "Cartoon Comic Sans" or just "Cartoon Sans" like the font "Comic Sans".
It kinda makes sense, they both have the same goal of seeming "safe" and"friendly", it shares the aesthetic of roundish shapes (except for the thin lines maybe).

that way, some people who studied at CalArts are spared from the internet's ire. Then again, I don't have much control on what term people come up with to describe an aesthetic, it seems Tv tropes already called it "Thin Line Animation"

John K coined the term back in the 90's and he was using it to describe the faux Disney style used by action cartoons in the 80's and 90's. Original Thundercats is Cal Arts style, the new one may look like shit but don't blame Cal Arts for that. The current trend in cartoon art styles has everything to do with the fact that people keep eating up the shows that use them, not because the art school people attend is forcing them to adopt it.

In addition, many of the creators of these cartoons have directly worked with one another in previous projects before. Absolutely their styles would be similar. Is it over saturated? Probably, but that seems to me more of a particular business model of today. Adult Swim especially is notorious for pushing cheap-to-make animations, given the slew of cartoons that borrowed directly from Space Ghost Coast to Coast: Sealab, The Brak Show (arguably from Cartoon Planet), Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, etc… Money is what drives it, that's why Korgoth of Barbaria, despite getting overwhelming praise (in my opinion, probably could have easily been of the greatest animation series for decades) never got picked up by AS: it cost too much to make. People forge the cookie-cutter styles of the 80s cartoons designed to sell toys, or the near total similarity between Hanna Barbera cartoons, or Chuck Jones cartoons. Honestly, the most innovative time in animation, in terms of pushing style and limits, was probably in the 90s, but that's when there was a lot of demand for alternative and experimentational animation, which was fostered by MTV…when MTV was still cool.

Also that the creators, instead of making something new or using another franchise that would have been better suited, choose Thundercats to potentially be a vessel for this crap.

Art students shouldn't copy-paste everything teachers do. They should experiment with what they are given and eventually create their own style. Otherwise everything will look the same.

Many, make small references to other shows, such as Rick and Morty having a reference to Gravity Falls.

At first it kinda just ticked me off that the main characters looked so much younger than they were supposed to be. I soon got over it, though, and Gravity Falls remains one of my favorite shows of all time.

Hopefully, that means that the animation art style of the 2020's will have a ton of variety. But, I wouldn't be surprised if the pendulum swings to a different art style that has more hard edges, similar to the 2000s art style, but likely more simplified to cut costs and produce more content quicker to appeal to our faster-paced society.

Hopefully, that means that the animation art style of the 2020's will have a ton of variety. The real problem with thundercats is that its particular version is done in a kinda odd way.

Which is fine, but with the muscle lines and the way the arm gets thinner and thinner from beefy shoulders to tiny hands, it looks unnatural. You can avoid this by making arms like rubber hoses (detail-less, same circumference throughout) like old cartoons or adventure time, but it seems this show opted out of that, which means it should try to keep the proportions straight.

Which clashes hard with his deeper voice.

You can see what I mean in the trailer.

It isn't even that bad. I actually find it pretty appealing and, I must admit, even kind of adorable. It's good to have an art style that represents its decade and our generation. It's like a symbol. It's something we and our children are gonna grow up with and I'm okay with that. Sure, there are much better styles out there, I can admit, but this one can suffice in my opinion, for what it is.

Take SU for example: completely flat pastel backgrounds, inconsistent, bad animation, terrible voice acting, terrible characters with the main character being a hyper-emotional, loud Gary Stu, all made by far left fetishists. Adventure Time and Over the Garden Wall both use this style of animation and aren't criticized nearly as much.

The Forces of Evil, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Regular Show, among others. Like, just because you guys randomly decided you don't like this art-style anymore doesn't make these shows any less good.

I still feel like the style itself was always a low point for a lot of these shows. (Gumball handles it best by having a mix of many styles and aesthetics)

With that being said, I agree with the argument that shows such as TMNT, Teen Titans, Samurai Jack ect. showed that in the early 2000's when given time you can really create a unique design to stand out. A design which truly makes the show memorable. But what if we were to go a design that is even lazier than #CalArt? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you:

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      South Park

Now yes, I know the first three season were essentially stop-motion animation and that is fair play. Trey and Matt worked with what they had and made something truly unique. But from Season 4 onward, when they had a proper video editor the characters still hopped around, use the same recycled four mouth orientations and four eyeball orientations. That may be the charm of the show (and please understand I love South Park) but up until Season 8 with "Good Times with Weapons" rarely did we see any kind of super ambitions animation, outside of the cinematic movie.

You may now commence your down-voting. And besides, the only things in that episode that had real effort put into it were the construction paper backgrounds/models.

They just improved their camera quality as the season went on.

Are you saying that if a show is in CalArts its automatically crap regardless of the show's content or story?

Memory’s hazy for that) Though I also have to admit Voltron’s not my cup of tea, and at least there’s the new Young Justice season for that void.

Steven Universe and Gravity Falls were at least able to keep a story going, but now we're just getting comedy after comedy. It's like, remember Hey Pikmin and Chibi Robo Zip Lash? The random 2d platformer games from non-platformer franchises? Imagine if Nintendo didn't stop doing that. 2d platformer Star Fox. A 2d Metroid with levels and goal points. A Fire Emblem platformer even. It'd be dumb! And yet here we are riding the stagnation train to gray land.

While we can maybe argue that art style =/= show quality with enough evidence for it, there is still something to be said in regards of the reason for animators to choose this style, or a very similar one, and how it relates to people's problem with the style choice.

We know it is because of time and budget limits, right..? This is understandable: animation is VERY hard even at its most basic expression, and even this simple style can take several hours of work just for a few minutes of animation. We are lying to ourselves if we think that old animators back then did not have to suffer because of this. Hell, even modern anime artists get this so much that they legitimately often get overworked trying to meet schedules while keeping quality the same. This reality by itself also explains why YouTube animators cannot prosper as much as other types of channels: they do not meet the strict upload requirements for YouTube to care about them enough. Working on the animation world is a punishing reality, and I can see why animators would do everything posible to make it less punishing.

A cartoon studio can not wait 10 years to get something out to market, they need to make it and profit off it. In an ideal world, sure, that would happen, but realistically it's just not how the system works.

They are not much harder than CalArts, really. And still, they are all unique and recognizable on their own way, with the PPG style even being praised and defended to death by fans.

So yes, we can effectively say that reducing animation costs to focus on production and/or storytelling does not have to come at the price of losing an original, appealing art style. If even South Park could do it with literal paper figurines made by 2 dudes in some improvised studio, then anyone can, while still meeting strict network-imposed requirements. The problem being with the latter, who obviously do not care about any of this and just greenlight the first thing they think they can milk at the very lowest effort possible. So, I blame networks more than artists and animators. This is all their doing and only now are they getting backlash for it.

Your screenshot makes the shows look more different than they are, because the Girls themselves happen to be very different from Dexter. Compare some other characters, like Unonium, Dee Dee, and Robin, and the similarities will be more visible.

I know I probably shouldn't, but I can't help it, especially since I've never had much confidence in my drawing to begin with.

So basically what you do and what's going on right now are separate entities and you should feel good that you have something you're good at as well as something you like.

When stuff like this happens, it's usually people trying to paint their obsessive hatred of something as "criticism" and/or tactic to hide what can be pretty much summed up as bullying. It honestly seems partly a result of what we call "cringe culture":

My suggestion is to simply work on your craft and improve where you feel you need to. I highly suggest maybe finding some digital art tutorials on Tumblr (unless you prefer traditional art) and/or books on how to draw. The latter has some examples done by professionals who have worked in the industry. ;)

I fear that people are going to get too wrapped up in blaming the school and not put enough fault on the TV channels that demand this style because it's cheaper and easier to animate. TV is always looking to cut corners as long as it looks passable.

It's a very prestigious school but the vast majority of their graduates are not famous. Virtually every major American animation house has people who went to CalArts. Many of their graduates will have gone on to work in Disney/Pixar or other animation film studios too. A good way of knowing whether CalArts students worked on something is the A113 Easter egg, which references a classroom in the animation department (you can look up lists of movies and TV shows that reference this, it's pretty diverse).

Call out Calarts for the lazy uninspired shit it is. Used to be hugely into cartoons and animation and this style literately killed any and all interest I had. Not to mention no one wants to make something that doesnt flat out pander to children or mental children or whatever the fat 27 year old on tumblr identifies as because how will a show ever get renewed unless it appeals to the lowest common denominator.

It's one of the reasons why I don't touch most modern cartoons.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                But about animation instead.

Our parents: "All music that kids hear today sounds like the same crap, old music was so much better."

Our generation: "All animations that kids watch today look like the same crap, old animation was so much better."

And a quick 10-minute browse on images and comments here immediately disprove both claims, as you can say the same about absolutely every generation of animation AND music if you cherry-pick carefully enough.

Man, to think that 20 to 30-something year old people already found a reason to sound like their parents… I am actually a bit scared about that, since I am on that bracket. Homer's dad truly was right: it WILL happen to us. It already has, if anything. How long until I pester someone online about their shit taste on videogames, then..? 10 years..? 5..? 1..? Time and nostalgia can be such cruel things.
