At some point we do need to confront the elephant in the room that what’s driving Japanese immigration policy is not economic calculus or concern for social cohesion, but rather a eugenic desire to maintain ethnic purity.
Japanese conservatives are obsessed with this idea of the Japanese nation as a pure mono ethnic culture untouched by the foreign barbarians. This is of course a lie built upon the suppression of Ainu, Ryukyuans, Zainichi Koreans,and the various ethnic groups that have been…migrating to Japan for its entire existence. It’s both incompatible with the real history of Japan, and with its inevitable future. There are valid concerns to be had about new cultures coming to Japan and their compatibility with what is already here. But these people aren’t…really concerned about social cohesion. They are concerned about the idea of a multiethnic society. The idea of a Chinese, Indonesian, Korean, or any foreign blooded person coming to Japan, and actually integrating, disappearing into the culture, is itself anathema to them.I love the legends of the Nihon Shoki as much as anyone but at some point we need to start living in reality. The imperial family migrated from Korea. There is no ethnically pure Japanese people and nor should there be.Sakoku failed and it’s not coming back
