I remember using Darkplaces to play Quake in general. Tried playing Quake Enhanced since it was given to me for free as well.

Traditional Quake maps like this are a treat.

A general thread to link and/or discuss Quake projects.

This one popped into my timeline and looks interesting. 32 winquake compatible maps, so they should have a more 'traditional' size and scope than a lot of other modern Quake stuff. Poked around a few and it looks like it could be worth a play for anyone who digs oldschool Quake. Link

This is the type of shit RAM prices increase with and with that any other parts essential for AI. I mean it, nigger, this was absolutetly not worth it. Also the videos worked directly out of the box so I'm not sure what the problem could've been there.
Sorry I won't use AI anymore

I had fun with Rekkr way back, but it had a few shitty layouts, like this one with a cave that loops back somewhere else and the other one with the dining halls. Also found E2M1 of it way too hard, with a weird difficulty spike from the previous maps. Think it was E2M!, at least. All I remember is it started at a dock area with some ships and soon takes you to some burning buildings.

I remember Rekkr having a really good Map01, good resource pack, but for the rest of the episode - I didn't finish the rest and it had had a similar impression to me.

I didn't really give the rest a fair shot, but made sure to idclev/noclip through really quick, same vibe. Felt like a worse version of "Sandy's Spaghetti Layouts" to me, a la the more numb, spread-out and uniconic aspects of Episode 2 and 3 of Ultimate Doom.

There's ways to make good Vanilla maps, even ones with a degree of visual complexity, even ones that are open or structured however you want, or even ones that are somewhat of both if you try hard enough. Though, it was fundamentally just an open community project. The leader was aiming for a Doom I episode structure, and you get whatever maps you get if they trickle in (I started a submission too, but given my usual walnut-capacity attention span, I didn't see it through).

Just finished playing Heretic episodes 1 to 5 for the first time and it was pretty fucking good.
I did it so I could play this new vanilla Heretic episode by Mycomedes, which is amazing so far, highly recommended.
www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/159116-anathema-a-vanilla-compatible-episode-for-heretic/

I also started playing through Rekkr, and it's been kind of shit to be honest, will need to go through more levels before I make my final judgement.

I may look like the usual forum user for some but once they see and read what I actually spout their image will quickly shout.

Lol that's so me. Imagine people' shock when they learn what a person I am today and through what shit I've been in my live, and how that caused my vocabulary be as harsh and off-filter as it can be, while walking around the retarded rules of engagement.

My line was specifically shitposting about the apocalypse angle, ie 'would the decisionmakers of the time really have let us have an apocalypse?'

That aside, probably hitting ToS limits. Don't give the retards ammo and maybe try and be a bit craftier.

Again, good reasons. They matter! I'm waiting. (Not really.)
Since you don't seem to care anyway and directly called me retarded I have no incentive to talk with such an drama-addicted nigger of the "Heretic Sucks" crowd beyond this last reply of mine. Take it on Troonworld with such stinking mouth instead of wanting to get your rocks off of a proveable statement. May Goyrisa rape you clear and show you such sights to believe!

lazrojas.com/wolfendoom/index2.html

I've decided to take a stab at Laz Rojas' "Second Encounter" project which basically ports all the levels from the Mac version of Wolf3D plus additional two levels (a full 32 megawad!) by the man himself and its all surprisingly quite the fun set! It has its tough moments but even on UV (I Am Death Incarnate!) it's rather an easy romp for an Laz Rojas set! In a contrast of his usual affairs Laz gives enough ammo and health to recover from any tough battles fought. This would've seriously helped his other sets where the lack of resources undermined any sort of strategy since you had no tools to work with. Imagine a general with only a squad of five in open terrain surrounded by skilled enemy snipers and minefields. It's a guaranteed loss, only winnable by pure luck! And mind you, no backup, lacking resources of your own. Good luck, kiddo.

The set is not entirely true to the original Mac port itself and still features the same pool of standard Wolf3D & Laz sprites (except for the flamethrower) for the enemies, weapons, and pickups. Not to mention the sound is also a mishmash of Mac and PC sounds from both versions of Wolf3D. While the Guards may call you out in CD audio quality they'll scream in bitcrushed DOS waves. Laz also hasn't tried to replicate the behaviors of your weapons and enemies as well, instead they're just faster and tougher variants of stock Doom code, some even completely unchanged like with the starting pistol and the Guards being simple Zombiemen reskins. It still plays action-packed and has some Wolf3D elements still intact (Mac flamethrower & rocket launcher, general Wolf3D weapon roster, treasure now acting as armor, wall-humping secrets full of health, treasure & ammo, general blocky map terrain) but it's still rather distant from the original. Ever seen Officers as Chaingunner reskins, down to firing and dropping chainguns upon their inevitable death? Not the first time either! That also happened in Laz' Operation: Eisenfaust. The only nitpick I have with this entire set. The usage of Doom Engine features are great as well. The height and floor variation allows for stairs and elevators for nicer area transitions, the advanced lightning allows for better details in otherwise barren corridors and rooms, the movement and minor RNG allows for more flexible and less arcadey gameplay (which tbh wasn't much of a problem for me anyway in the OG), there are even sweet outside areas to add more believability and life outside the map area! Not to mention basic deco like tables are also happening which removes that silliness where food was sitting next to the tables instead of on it. Laz used Doom's advantages well and made some visual wows and smoother flows through every map. A genious modder who sadly is in his worst times. Thanks Troonworld for ragebaiting his complete quit from the scene!

Stopped at Floor 2-4 (MAP08) for the day, will continue on the following days. The MP-40 is a real one-shot wonder lol.

Those games, particuarly Nintendo, were designed in a way to make it possible for retards to still be able to finish it, even in the worst of circumstances. The first switch puzzle is so easy yet people zone out and feel frustrated because they have to [insert slaughter rant here] (...)
That's way off the mark, sir. Verily, you seem to bear the nature of a simple person but no problem. There's always a program dedicated to take care of people with limited conditions such as your present. Just get off the basement and Bezos will sent the nearest drone with your chemo. Aces!

Now, in regards to the game-beating capability of some Nintendo or Nintendoless piece of gaming; that's basically intrinsic. Yet note my deliberate usage of the word 'basically'.. why's that? Simply 'cause on this day and age Minority Report is way more Tom than Cruise and as such we need to take rather sophisticated maneuvers against more than certain retaliative actions from sleeper agents and other detestable tools of the system. Also, it's a nice way to seg into the actual point here, which is: YOU CAN'T FIGHT DESIGN. Period.

We either comply/complain or apply/refrain. No inbetweener. A closed-conduit isn't supposed to bust open but when it does it's now a new object. Its proprieties changed. Likewise, writing a piece about how dumb Soul Reaver's puzzles made you feel or how Earthworm Jim relies too much on one-off gimmicks won't make the world spin differently. If it did, Earth is no longer.

I do think communities profit from growth.
Well, as previously clued, to me that's not the case and for those on the positive camp; the burden is lingering on your AIDS-ridden backs. Shock the monkey harder cos I stand unconvinced.

The game gets more popular and, in return, more support. More maps and community projects, more graphics, more music, so on and so forth.
Ok, but do we need more support, maps and, gosh.. more fuckin' community projects? Seriously? These have never been more abundant yet doesn't our current state feels like the aftermath of a deal with satan? Tightass contract and really poor reading?

You're basically assuming the best on all fronts without giving a sound reasoning to why this would benefit Heretic besides that "more, more and more" nonsense. Like, you say 'profit'. Alright. That implies prior investiment, correct? Good. When we put some time into taking a shit, our profit would be the relief - agreed? But still, weren't we just taking a shit to begin with? I mean.. doing something just cuz we can, by necessity, or vacancy doesn't necessarily mean we're positively aggregating. We could just be cloggin' the whole damn thing. So, yeah. Unless you break some rather pertinent-placed judeochristian taboos in your toilet nothing else will come out of that shiting - and from where I stand, THAT is for the best for our race. For others, well, they might just eat a bowl full of shit and smile happy with brown teeth. Again, good reasons. They matter! I'm waiting. (Not really.)
