Description

Hold a box-shaped device using openGrid and Underware 2.0 to keep your cable management in check! For any given dimensions from your trusty caliper, this holder automatically figures out how many grid tiles it will need to span. There might be other options out there for mounting devices to the bottom of your desk, but this holder gives you a fast-printing, low-profile, and aesthetic option that can be used repeatedly. Not to mention the fact that you do not need to figure out connectors and such; just align these bad boys on your device and press into your appropriately-sized openGrid board. Feel free to upload designs that have worked for your devices so that other people can benefit without even having to measure!

Print recommendations (PLA): 3 walls, 15% infill, higher extrusion temp to promote layer adhesion (at least 220C), skirt, and supports at or above 60% overhang. If desired, split and rearrange the separate objects in your slicer, such as using the Mesh Tools plugin for Cura. Take caution when removing supports; carefully wiggling a screwdriver or a knife in the tree lattice works for me, but your results may vary.

Make sure you are pushing into the base rather than the top of the bracket, otherwise you risk breaking it off. As you can see in the pictures, I managed to do this on my first couple of iterations (although, that was before I increased the default thickness, and even two brackets are holding my router just fine).

Check my GitHub for the latest OpenSCAD file, which includes drawing unused grid tiles and the box in preview mode.

Inspired by gabitim's TP-Link TL-SG108 holder for openGrid

File originally based on mitufy's Parametric openGrid Snap with removal of any non-standard-snap code.

This is amazing! I'm surprised not more people are using this. I was able to get a holder for a usb hub and 2 power supplies for laptops. Especially super happy with the one for my USB hub since it has 12 different ports and I would need them all so I had no idea how I would find something that works for me. Made a holder with this and it fits perfectly, only covers the vga port that I don't need. If I want them to sit a bit tighter, should I increase snap body width a bit? Because one of the powerbricks is pretty heavy and I think it could do with some extra strength.

This has only been up for a week so that could be why it's not more popular quite yet, but thank you! I'm glad it's been working out. My router sounds similar to your hub, where regular clamshells and such wouldn't work well with all the things on the sides. "Tight" depends on what dimension you're looking for. If you want the brackets to sit tighter in the grid, that "snap body width" determines each side of the main square-ish portion, and the "basic nub depth" affects how much the nubs stick out (although it doesn't have much room for adjustment). I haven't played with the openGrid-specific settings as the defaults (from mitufy, linked in the description) have worked just fine for me, in fact have required a good amount of force. If you printed this before this time yesterday, it might have been before I revised the parameters and defaults to increase strength and overall roundness, so customizing again might work better for securing your power bricks.

Oh I didn't even notice it's not been up for long, good thing I didn't start this project a month ago because I would have been frustrated haha. I've added a picture. One of the main things that would be a problem with a lot of other options I found was the jack that sits all the way right on the front face but with this model it wasn't a problem. They definitely sit snug. I'm also using the Opengrid lite which is offcourse a bit less then the normal ones. Maybe a suggestion for the future, it would be awesome if in the customizer we could also add a support bracket on each side in the middle. So you would have the 4 corners and then down the lenght in the middle another support on each side. Which could help with some bigger/heavier items. Again, thank you so much for this model and the work you put in! This community truely is amazing.

That's a great suggestion to add optional support brackets. If this continues to get more attention, then I will definitely look into adding them!

I wish I could boost you again, because I find this generator so useful. There's a few things I was hoping could be improved. I know there's a setting for Max Cap Length, but this only affects the Length part, it would be great if we could control the width side as well, which may prevent issues like the one shown in the screenshot. It would be great if it could go further than 75. We have the setting 'Wall Width' which I wish went further than 12– but ultimately having the ability to alter the X and Y widths (A wall length field?) separately would be amazing. The reason being, some sides of the item might need more 'clearance' than others. Think USB ports that are close to corners on one side, but fine on the other side of the corner. The last one might be a stretch but perhaps allowing corners to span multiple tiles would give a lot of flexibility and strength. But I understand if that's too complex. Love the ability to adjust the snap settings! I found the defaults a bit weak 🙏

Just to add to my previous comment (sorry) I feel like having separate fields for 'Inside Corner Rounding' would be super useful as well 🙏 So we can affect the XY Fillet and the Z fillet (similar to the lateral rounding, but for the inside corner) Again, I wish I could boost you more, you deserve it 🙏

This is a fantastic modeler and exactly what I was looking for. However, my box holder is only barely retained by the grid and cannot support the weight of my USB dock. Is there a setting I can adjust to increase the clip retention or to ensure the clips are sized appropriately so the holder stays securely seated in the grid? It also seems to be seated quite high from the top of the grid.

Is it just me, or do the holders not sit in the lite opengrid very well? They don't sit as tight in the grid as anything else I've printed. Could very well just be a setting I'm missing or something.

You're saying that they're snapped all the way into the grid, and it feels loose? The standard snaps are very tight for me and take a bit of force to be seated all the way.

Yeah, that's what's weird to me. All I did was adjust device parameters for my devices to fit and set the Opengrid snap thickness to lite.

If you didn't split the part in your slicer and rearrange, you might have ran into some geometry weirdness where the body didn't line up with your nozzle size, assuming you have a standard 0.4mm nozzle. Otherwise, trying to slightly increase the "snap body width" or "basic nub depth" parameters might work to tighten things up for you.

YES! 🎉 🙌 It looks so good, I just have one minor teensy addition, I think it would be good to add that same fillet that you did on the bottom, to the top as well, for strength! :) It might also be a good idea to have a separate field for the fillets/rounding on the edges, versus the inner/outer corners. In the case someone wants to have big inner radius, but top/bottom of their item isn't as rounded— think like an Apple TV or an Mac Mini, top edges are flat, but corners are super rounded. Or some people might have a powerbrick with rounded top/bottoms as well as rounded corners.

I tried to separate the parameters for the inner radius and the top/bottom corners, but it did not turn out. This would be better geared toward someone more skilled with OpenSCAD than myself. At any rate, I was able to at least separate all of the rounding into three different parameters while adding that top fillet.

Can you handle longer items for the input? I have an LED light that is 410mm long. I know this won't fit on the plate, the current limit of 280mm doesn't fit either.

Do you have a preference on how much coverage the "cap" of the model would provide in that case? Currently, the code for these makes the caps 1/4 of that dimension, so 410mm would give 102.5mm-long caps. I can add a maximum cap length parameter if this default doesn't work for you.

Thank you. Cap length is an interesting question. I think a updatable field would be great. There's probably some engineering that would tell us when the length doesn't add any support, but I'm not an engineer. Since I accidently printed at the max size of 280, those caps already look quite long.

Ha! I had the same thought originally that there is probably some ideal calculation for this, but my brain was hurting enough. I will add this maximum-value parameter and increase the existing maximums for device dimensions.

I love the design and want to make a holder for a laptop, because I can't find a good one. But looking at the design, I think it's too weak. Is there a way to edit the number of snaps per corner? I'm new to the parametric editing etc

It's certainly possible, but I don't think this model is an overall good fit to hold a laptop, assuming that you might want to remove and replace it repeatedly. I've seen non-openGrid models for under-desk laptop storage, but if openGrid compatibility is what you're looking for, I could work on something like that. Thank you for checking this out for your project, at the very least!

Hello, thank you for sharing! Would it be possible to update the model so that the different parts don't move/don't go out of the build plate when the device size is larger? It's not important for the print that they are actually at their correct distance, only when computing how to align them on the grid.

It's certainly possible, but I prefer the model as it currently is so that there is more assurance in how it is generated in a way that will fit the device on the grid. The model currently generates the base separately from the bracket, so substantial rework would be needed. Most if not all slicers should support being able to split a model into individual parts and rearrange so that they fit your build plate.

This looks so cool. Can it be adjusted to work with opengrid-light as well? In principle instead of the snap base it would only need to have the screw of the expanding snap: https://makerworld.com/en/models/1412027-opengrid-self-expanding-snap#profileId-1780060

I used it with opengrid lite, the snaps that are being used in the model work really well. I have 2 power bricks and 1 usb hub under my desk and I'm not worried at all about them coming loose.
