How it feels to outlive your depression, just to realize you never learned any life skills while you were trying to rescue yourself

Avatar

Does this trope also apply if the character DOES die but comes back? Genuinly curious hhshshsh

Avatar

I did that In a story once ecept they actually died and had magic just kinda holding their body together, only falling apart after they’ve emotionally healed and moved on and started a new life

Avatar

heartbreakingly good idea

Avatar

This is like all of Witch King by Martha Wells. Just continuing to live through ones attempts at self-sacrifice

Avatar

oh that's why ash ketchum is so fucked up, he's had to experience like a dozen of these

Avatar

I beg your pardon?????

@followmykpopsideblog Mewtwo, lugia, unown, 4ever, lucario, manaphy, sinnoh trilogy, victini + bw dragons, diancie hoopa and volcanion, that's just the movies i can think of now

Avatar

Guess I'm a character now

Avatar

two things;

Avatar

I accidentally sent without saying any of the things, zero things I guess

Avatar

@spooniepumpkin ok if this really was an accident i think you dont realize just how wonderfully perfect it turned out. i mean, come on. "two things;" a semicolon is two things, ° and ,. and a semicolon is used in places a sentence could have ended, but the author continued writing, and because of that it's a common symbol in mental health awareness, for example as a tattoo motiv for people who struggle or used to struggle with things like depression, suicidal ideation, or addiction. its a symbol for when things could have ended, but continued anyway. "ok two things;" summed all that up in a beautifully concise and funny way.

"Trope where a character survives an event they thought they'd die from and now just has to keep living."

In my household we refer to this as "not eaten by the eels at this time" a la The Princess Bride.

Who's that?

Avatar

@katiajewelbox Main character in Peaky Blinders! He unexpectedly survived WWI and decided to become a gangster ✨

Avatar

@riafunnel I'm not familiar with that show, but I can see the comparison.

Avatar

Been a long time since I watched it, but I might say Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Avatar

Going to be Ralsei, I'm confident

Avatar

And when the character realizes they are living Past The Event, and they are suddenly hit with the fact that theyre disappointed because they actually were starting to count on dying, and even maybe look forward to it. Ita the being forced to confront passive suicidal acceptance of death when you dont actually die. Its the relearning how to be a person again. (This is a good trope no matter what, but Buffy Summers was doing it like no one else when she had to keep living and fighting after dying TWICE before she turned 21.)
