One of the devs behind the original The Witcher has looked back at the game’s controversial collectible “sex cards,” saying he isn’t embarrassed by the feature, even though he admits it wasn’t a good solution.
Former lead story designer Artur Ganszyniec explained that the team wanted romance to be part of the game because it’s an important part of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, but CD Projekt Red was still a small studio at the time and didn’t have the budget, technology, or experience to create detailed romance scenes.
Instead, the developers used collectible cards to represent those relationships. Ganszyniec says that while the idea made sense given the team’s limitations, it didn’t age well, and some parts now feel awkward.
The upcoming The Witcher remake is expected to “modernize” many of the game’s older systems, including its approach to romance.
