Koakuma (小悪魔 Koakuma, lit. "Little Devil") is an unnamed devil that lives in the Scarlet Devil Mansion.[4] She first appears in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil as the Stage 4 midboss.
General Information
Personality
ZUN stated that she has a capricious, mischievous personality and doesn't think of consequences, similar in many ways to Daiyousei.[5]
Occupation
Koakuma lives in the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and has been seen helping out Patchouli Knowledge in the mansion's library on multiple occasions.[3][6]
Species
Koakuma was originally described as a devil - they are stated to be a powerful race on par with vampires and magicians, with Koakuma as one of the weakest among them, hence the name "little devil".[4] However, this would be called into question over two decades later in Whispered Oracle of Hakurei Shrine where ZUN claims she's only referred to as a devil as a nickname, and is instead a being of magic, similar to a magician like Patchouli.

Origin
ZUN has stated that when he was creating the nameless midbosses (Daiyousei and Koakuma) from The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, he considered them too "small fry" by virtue of being midbosses to have names.[7] He thought of them as nothing more than "enemies that drop power-ups and aren't fighter jets", but was surprised at the communities' eagerness to make them full characters, and put more effort into midboss-only characters in future entries, citing Lily White and Tewi Inaba as examples.[8]
Name
Koakuma was not given an official name when Embodiment of Scarlet Devil was released, and ZUN confirmed early on that she does not have one.[9] The commonly used nickname for her in the fanbase is Koakuma (小悪魔), meaning "Little Devil" or "Imp". ZUN used this term in a response to a question from the fans, while again stating at the same time that she was unnamed, though he did have rough sketches for a face sprite as well as plans to give her spell cards.[9] Official works have since referred to her by this nickname, while reiterating that her actual name is unknown.[7][2]
Design
The sprite of Koakuma in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil shows that she wears a black dress with white sleeves. She has a small pair of black, bat-like wings on the sides of her head and red hair. In official works since, she is consistently depicted with a second pair of bigger, black bat-like wings on her back.
ZUN admitted not remembering if she's supposed to have long or short hair on her original sprite, stating that the image coming to his mind when thinking of the character is how she's commonly depicted in fan-art.[10]
Appearances
Koakuma does not have a speaking role in any of her appearances, and lacks any official profiles, spell cards, or in-game art beyond her sprite.
In chapter 2, Koakuma is seen helping around in the library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.

Koakuma's modified sprite
- In one of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil's sprite sheets, Koakuma has an appearance in the Extra Stage sprites. This is because the same image was taken from the stage 4 sprites, with a color overlay on the whole image.
- Koakuma is one of the few Windows-era game characters who don't appear in Hopeless Masquerade as a background character.
- Koakuma, Daiyousei, Kasen's arm, Mizuchi, and Miyoi are currently the only Touhou characters that have titles but no profiles or music themes.
