Casting a suburban dad as Odysseus or some bebopping swaggering NYC type as Menelaus is more jarring to me.

The only thing I really don't get is why Nolan is getting into arguments about authenticity. 'Well they actually had black bronze' 'They wouldn't have a symphonic orchestra back then ' He should just lean into his artistic expression and leave it at that. It's an epic fantasy story and he can interpret that however he wants. He just can't claim that it's authentic to anything but his own vision.
My favorite cinematographic portrayal of Greek myth is Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Medea”, in which Maria Callas (a literal Greek, non-literal Goddess) portrayed the titular character. He picked an all Mediterranean and Northern African cast (mostly non-professional and unknown), which was the opposite to Hollywood’s approach to “Sword & Sandals” epics of the time. VERY good movie, I encourage everyone to watch it.
I don't understand why everyone seems to think elliot page is playing achilles. They are playing sinon. Achilles was already dead before the odyssey and was only a major character in the Iliad.
In the odyssey achilles only appears briefly in the underworld.
I've heard that in the film sinon too enters the underworld but that's likely because in virgins inferno sinon is there. So I think Nolan is using multiple sources ranging from Homer to Virgil and beyond to make a sort of Mish mash.
Regardless...sinon is the one who snuck the Trojan horse in after pretending to defect which allowed the soldiers inside the horse to open the gates for the rest of their army in one of virgil's works and appeared in the underworld in a later virgil work.
Elliot page is sinon. Sinon is neither achilles nor is he a stand in for achilles.
