Dejan Petković - Povratak Review

Alright, so I took a listen to Dejan Petković's Povratak from 1976 and honestly, it's kind of a mixed bag - but in an interesting way. First off, the production feels very much like a product of its time: warm, analog vibes with that classic Yugoslav pop sheen. You can tell it was recorded live with real instruments, which gives it a soulful edge over today's overly polished tracks. The A-side, "Tužena Pesma," really grabbed me. It starts soft and slowly builds up into this emotional crescendo. The arrangement by Zvonimir Skerl is tight, and you can hear subtle jazz influences creeping in through the brass. Dejan's voice? Man, he's got that raw, slightly raspy tone that just cuts through without being harsh. It's melancholic but not depressing - perfect for late-night drives or rainy afternoons. Now, the title track "Povratak" on the B-side - yeah, it's catchy, but not as strong. Feels a bit repetitive after a few listens. The lyrics are pretty standard breakup fare, nothing groundbreaking, but they're delivered with enough sincerity to make you feel something. Still, it lacks the punch of the first track and kind of fades into the background if you're not paying attention. One thing I didn't love? The balance between vocals and instrumentation leans a little too much toward the band at times, making some lines hard to catch. And while the orchestration is lush, it occasionally feels like it's trying too hard to impress rather than support the song. But here's the kicker - even though it's a single, only two tracks, it somehow manages to leave a lasting impression. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's authenticity, or maybe Dejan just had that rare ability to sing straight into people's hearts. Either way, Povratak might be short, but it hits harder than most modern EPs trying way too hard to fill space.
