I've heard before on a couple occasions that they removed it because the IP counter stopped corresponding to new IPs posting in threads correctly after an April fools event messed it up, and they were too retarded to fix it. I can't be sure how true that is though. But I will say that "4cuck removed the IP counter because it showed there weren't many people" reason never seemed like a perfect explanation to me either because anyone can look at the site's pph on 4stats and clearly see it's been declining for years.

It was removed because people were ban evading and samefagging, and you could spot it easily when it was happening due to the unique IP counter. I distinctly recall holding a conversation with someone who had a new IP nearly every single post they made. I was using 4chanX at the time and it had an indicator next to the post itself showing if it was a new IP. He made like 40 posts responding to me alone over the course of a couple hours. He was a shitposting, spamming faggot ruining the thread by spewing delusional trash and straight up provable lies. His posting style kept coming back up outside of replies to me as well. I think he was in the thread for like 6 hours. On his own he likely inflated the unique IP count by at least 70-100. The thread had about 175 unique IPs by the time it archived at well over 500 replies. This is the most extreme case I personally experienced, but I do know it's common practice to samefag like crazy on 4chan. Don't underestimate the mental illness and total lack of ethics on 4chan, it's absolutely Reddit tier.

So yeah, it was removed because people were figuring out 4chan is nowhere near as populous as Hiro wants you to think. Lower unique users make your website less valuable to potential advertisers. Hiro is a known scammer. He has a long history of being a scumbag. The funny and inevitable part is that it didn't really work and 4chan is still blacklisted on the public side of things despite all of the fraud tactics Hiro attempted. So he just sticks with selling user data and guerilla marketing space (which is illegal). This fraudulent marketing tactic isn't used so much to advertise to the small number of users on 4chan, it's because 4chan still looks legitimate and unbiased to the rest of the clueless internet. Second order advertising.

4chan became Reddit with less focus. It's funny because twitter is still a less bad version of 4chan in smaller discussions because there's some accountability. Unless you're a major corporation or government, you can't just spam and samefag and bot your way to victory. And those entities do that on 4chan on top of random mentally ill users working on their own and dedicated discord raids, both of the latter are successful at ruining what's left of 4chan.

When you realize the true state of 4chan, it will make your head spin. To the point Hiro and at least several mods genuinely deserve prison time starting at half a decade.
