Friends are destroying the home I just bought
Friends are destroying the home I just bought
Landlord Tenant Housing

Location: Massachusetts
Hello, new to this sub, in desperate need of help.

I recently just bought a condo outright. My friends were struggling financially, they are a single income couple, he cannot work until he becomes a legal citizen or it will risk his status. So I offered to rent them a room for a very low rate while they figured it out.

We’ve lived together before, though I wasn’t the owner of that home so it’s a slightly different dynamic.

Their cat was fine for about a week, then started peeing/pooping everywhere. I was away and when I came back had to clean up for about 6 hours before the stink was manageable.

I asked them to take responsibility and find a way of containing their cat when unsupervised and managing the problem long term with training/veterinary care/whatever would resolve the issue. I offered to lend her money to get her cat spayed. They both did a 180 personalitywise and won’t even talk to me anymore, meanwhile their cat is still peeing and pooping on the floor/in my belongings/on the couch.

They have started to turn the thermostat up, and today I came home and it was totally off.

We are in the midst of a heat wave and my animals who live on the top floor were all very hot, panting, and uncomfortable.

I took many precautions to ensure they were comfortable here, including letting them put their name on the utilities, and they receive mail here. And now I’m seeing I did nothing to protect myself.

They are being unreasonable and refuse to have a civil conversation. Is there any legal action I can take here? I cannot live like this.

Need ideas for live in girlfriend expecting inheritance when none has been willed to her
Wills Trusts and Estates

Location: Illinois

Hello. I’m the executor for my Dad’s estate in IL. He’s resting in peace. He had a girlfriend for 17 years who lived in his house. (Illinois is not a common law state.)

All of his financial accounts had beneficiaries and many of his accounts are transfer on death to his kids, including me.

His will specifically designates all the estate goes to the kids and none goes to anyone else. It states that no one can claim to be married to him.

Edit: The will is from four years after she started living there, and basically only applies to his house and car due to beneficiaries on all bank accounts.

His girlfriend is living in his house and she looked at all his statements after death. She thinks that she will be inheriting a major stake in his estate.

The kids all feel we want to help her as she is retirement age, but we don’t know how to tell her that she isn’t directly inheriting anything.

Edit: She has been retired the entire time while living there. My dad covered all bills and expenses for her (to my knowledge).

Edit: There is no mortgage.

Edit: She has no children. They had no children. She has family.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to legally protect ourselves when dealing with her? We are now supporting her letting her stay in the house, paying the bills there (maybe temporarily)…?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Location: Nevada. fire alarm was broken and was going off for multiple hours at place of employement. Management told us to 'power through it' and continue the work day. Most employees needed to seek medical attention after.

Hello. Location: Nevada.

Pretty much what the title says.

We open for the day, fire alarm is going off. Fire dept came during the night to address the issue and cleared the building. They went to turn the alarm off but property management had changed the keys to access the area that they needed to get to to do so.

This fire alarm is fucking LOUD. Like physically painful in the ears loud in the moment. So we wait outside until property management comes to turn it off. About an hour wait.

2pm rolls around and it goes off again. Fire dept checks that its a false alarm. Over the next hour, management was saying we COULD NOT leave the building nor could we close the doors to save the hearing of our clients. We were specifically told in writing to 'power through it'. No ear protection, we were stuck from 2pm to 2:50pm before someone agreed to let us close and get out of the store. Two employees were required to stay in the store and one of them is experiencing more extreme symptoms than the rest of us as she was exposed to it for over two hours.

We all have ear pain, headaches, ringing in the ears, and some have experienced nausea and other symptoms.

Is there anything we can do? Im concerned that we have a malfunctioning fire alarm and that management actively told us to stay in an environment that lead to most of the staff seeking medical attention.

Any help is appreciated.

Personal vehicle for work
Personal vehicle for work

Location: California

I live in California and work for a non-profit in the conservation field. They don’t provide a work vehicle so they rely on us employees to use our personal cars to travel to different restoration sites in the area and transport any equipment we might need with us. The main boss of our org told us that we are not allowed to be reimbursed for any travel to our restoration sites because it’s considered part of our daily commute; however, while our sites aren’t very far from the office we work out of, the mileage adds up having to drive to different sites and sometimes to multiple sites a day. I’ve done some googling and everything I’m reading is that it is 100% illegal for my employer to not reimburse us for any travel to our sites and that my daily commute ends once I show up to the office. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

I’m also new to the job and from talking with other employees, they would rather not deal with such things in fear of getting in trouble or being treated badly.

Found my own obituary online - with my full name, DOB, hometown, date of death, method of death (suicide), picture of my face, and a remembrance blurb. What are my options here? USA

Location: Oregon, USA

Actions I have taken: I reached out to the website owners and asked them to remove the obituary. I also asked for information about when it was submitted, by whom, for any info they could provide.

Response from website admins: They were very kind, shocked, cooperative and removed the obituary. They also sent me the original submission form information, which stated that it was sent in and published many years ago. The submitter provided their full name and email address and relation to me - this person is a family member of mine. This is a family member who has been consistently cruel and hurtful in my life. I have not confronted them about this yet because I expect them to lie and deny it. My discovery of this obituary was less than a year ago.

What are my options? Can I seek more information (ie an IP address?) or pursue defamation or libel?

Can my estranged father take my house if his name was never on the deed?
Can my estranged father take my house if his name was never on the deed?
Real Estate law

Location: Pennsylvania

I have a complex property situation based in Pennsylvania. My aunt bought a house in her name in the 70s, my parents got married in the 80s and moved into the house, my aunt added my mother to the deed in the 90s, and my aunt’s name was taken off the deed in the 00s. Leaving my mother as the sole owner. 5 years ago, she added my name to the deed. 1 year ago we took her name off the deed. Currently, my name is the only name on the deed.

Does my estranged father have any claim on my house now or in the future when my mother dies? His name was never on the deed, utility bills were never in his name, even the cars tied to this address were never in his name.

Business Law

Location: Texas

A little background: I was laid off in January as part of a large workforce reduction. I worked as an Accounts Receivable clerk, and my responsibilities were transferred to another employee after my termination. I have since found employment elsewhere.
While I worked there, we used Square to process customer payments. My boss originally had her phone number set up for the two-factor authentication (2FA). Because she often wasn’t available to provide the verification code when needed, she and our IT department decided to change the 2FA phone number to mine. I didn’t make that decision myself. I was told they were making the change so payment processing could continue without delays.
Apparently, after laying me off, they never updated the account to remove my phone number. They are now unable to access the account.
Over the past several days they’ve repeatedly called me while I’m at work. They also asked a former coworker’s daughter, who I’m close with, to reach out to me. This isn’t as simple as texting them a verification code. From what I understand, it would require me to contact Square, verify information, and authorize the removal of my phone number from their account.
I don’t have the time during my workweek to handle this, and I also don’t feel comfortable getting involved. Before my layoff, they made accusations against me that I found both hurtful and completely unfounded. Because of that experience, I don’t wish to have further contact with anyone from that office.
After I blocked their phone numbers (which I did shortly after my layoff), they emailed me. The email states that if I don’t respond by July 8, they will document my lack of cooperation and consult with legal counsel.
My question is: Am I under any legal obligation to assist my former employer with regaining access to their Square account when they were the ones who chose to associate my phone number with it and failed to update it after terminating my employment? Can they realistically pursue legal action against me for refusing to help?

Fiance Suddenly Died
Fiance Suddenly Died
Credit Debt Bankruptcy

Location: Atlanta GA

3 months ago I gave my fiance Chris a credit card that was in my name to use in his business. He put approximately three purchases on it. One being his auto insurance; the other being 2 months of phone bills. And a few more for a restaurant and a liquor store. So at any rate the bill is approximately $980. Chris was going to pay it off, but before so suffered a massive stroke and after 3 weeks in ICU passed away.

His 87-year-old father and a 58-year-old brother have been dickheads to me about this whole situation since there was 3 weeks of us all being together in the hospital room and no love was lost between us. The father being the true definition of a cranky old man who wanted everything his way, and the brother going along with anything he says to keep the peace. So now they have sold off all of Chris's possessions. Chris didn't have anything in the bank or any investments, but he did have a lot of tools and several trucks. I sent the brother a text last night asking him since he had sold off all of Chris's assets to please pay the credit card bill. He responded that he was not responsible for Chris's debts.

Do I have any legal rights to getting the brother to pay this bill? Chris had no debt to pay off, and I was the only person that he owed money to (besides his father). I'm sure between the sale of his work trucks and tools there was at least $7000 made. Can I file something in court to make my debt be acknowledged and paid from the sale of his things?

Previous homeowner keeps having packages delivered here and now says I have to hold onto them.

Location: North Carolina, US

About eight months ago, my family purchased our home near , and ever since we moved in, we have been receiving shipments for the prior owner. It wasn't a big deal at first. If something arrived via USPS, I would write "Not at this address" on it or get in touch with UPS or FedEx so they could handle it.

The former owner eventually made an appearance and expressed regret. They urged me to keep onto anything that appeared until they could come get it, saying they were still in the process of updating their address with a number of locations. I agreed because it made sense.

That still occurs, even if it occurred months ago. By now, we've most likely received twenty or more shipments. Sometimes the boxes are left on my porch for almost a week before they are picked up, and other times they will visit the next day.

While I was at work last week, another delivery arrived. USPS returned it to the sender because my wife tagged it "Not at this address," assuming it was just another one that had been sent in error.

The previous owner came by a few days later looking for it, and when I explained what happened, they got pretty upset. They said we had no right to send it back and that we should have held onto it for them like we had before.

At this point I'm getting tired of being their unofficial mailroom. We've reminded them several times to update their address, but the packages just keep coming.

Friend charged with felony child abuse during postpartum mental health crisis. What should we expect?
Friend charged with felony child abuse during postpartum mental health crisis. What should we expect?
Criminal Law

Location: Florida

One of my closest friends, who is in her early 20s, is going through an incredibly difficult situation, and I’m hoping someone familiar with Florida law or DCF cases can offer some insight.

A few months after giving birth, she began struggling with what appears to be severe postpartum depression. She had admitted to having suicidal thoughts and intrusive thoughts about harming her baby. She knew something wasn’t right and had been trying to get help.

Recently, during a mental health crisis, she became overwhelmed while the baby was crying and admitted to her therapist that she had recently covered the baby’s nose and mouth briefly to make him stop crying. Thankfully, the baby was not physically injured, but she was reported by her therapist and then arrested/ charged with felony child abuse and no contact order with the victim.

She has no criminal history, no history of substance abuse, and before this, there had never been concerns about neglect. The baby’s father is involved, both families are supportive, and the baby has always had a safe home and plenty of support. Right now the baby is under the care of his grandparents. This seems to be an isolated incident that happened during a severe mental health episode.

After her arrest, the judge ordered that she be transferred to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation and treatment. She’s been there for about a week, and at the most recent hearing the judge decided to wait for the hospital’s psychiatric evaluation before making any decisions about release or the next steps in the criminal case.

Her family cannot afford a private attorney, so she’s represented by a public defender.

I’m not asking whether what she did was wrong. Everyone understands the seriousness of what happened. I’m trying to understand what the legal process typically looks like in Florida when postpartum mental illness is a significant factor.

My questions are:

What should we expect from here?

Does postpartum depression or psychosis change how Florida courts handle cases like this?

How long do no contact orders stay in place for in situations like these?

Is there anything her family should be doing right now?

How can I best support her when I visit?

Thank you.

Hello! Im asking for a friend i know texas is an at will state but it seems ridiculous that they could fire my friend bc she walks to work? She is always on time and had no issues with them before can anything be done? At this point it feels like discrimination against low income individuals (if that even is a thing) because how do they expect people to get better lives here in Texas if they fire them just because they are walking to work.

My 3 year old son made some comments today that I’m not sure what to do with.

Location: Fargo ND

Background: my child’s mom lives in Idaho while I live in ND we have a 50/50 custody agreement. One month on one month off. I’ll blur names since there are step parents involved. Greg will be the step dad not his real name.

I asked my kid today if he was excited to go back to moms. His reply was “no, Greg gets really mad and makes me and mommy cry. When mommy cries grandma comes and gets me.” Then he proceeded to mimic a sobbing motion. Shoulders shaking and hands over his eyes. Now I’m not quite sure how to deal with this. I don’t want to say he’s lying but he’s 3 and he makes up stories about me and him going to the park and stuff but this doesn’t seem made up. I know I need to have a convo with mom but not quite sure what steps to take and whether to involve police or cps.

*UPDATE*

We just had our swap yesterday on Sunday. I talked directly to mom about it and she she wasn’t overly defensive. Just about as defensive as anybody be with that situation. I did let her know that if that was happening and she needed to remove our son from that situation then she was welcome to call me and I would come get him or meet her somewhere. I also made sure that I wasn’t just looking out for our child but for as well and that if she needs help then she can always ask and that nobody would be opposed to helping her.

Warrant for my arrest - two years later?!
Warrant for my arrest - two years later?!

Location: Minnesota

Hi - I (26F) was pulled over today on a very basic speed warning. I was very lucky that the cop that pulled me over was just giving me a warning, and was beyond kind. He asked me to provide my license so I could be on my way and I complied.

After running my ID, he came back to the side of my car and my partner was in the passenger seat. He said simply “I promise nothing bad happened, you are not being arrested, I just need to talk to you real quick.” Seriously, he was beyond kind and patient with me. What he told me took me by surprise.

He said I had a warrant out for my arrest. I actually asked him if he was joking. He mentioned a county had a warrant out for my arrest - the same one I had a car accident in in October 2024.

Short summary: I worked for a university as an admissions counselor, so I was constantly on the road in a university car with university insurance. I didn’t sit long enough at a stop sign and I went into an intersection and got tboned at 55mph in my passenger side. I complied with police and my university as well as the insurance on both sides. It was my first ever accident - I was pretty shaken up. It ultimately was deemed my fault by insurance and I was told by my university that I couldn’t drive their cars anymore. Fine, makes sense.

I thought that was the end of that until today. I received 0 communication or mail regarding that I had a ticket for a failure to yield at a stop sign, and now apparently I have a warrant for my arrest.

Here’s the other mind boggling thing: I have been hired at two school districts in between the time of the accident to today. Not once did they bring up seeing this on my record.

I called the county police office and they told me to call the judicial system tomorrow to explain my situation. I have a squeaky clean record besides this - and had I received any of the communication it wouldn’t have gotten to this point!!! I am 100% freaking out.

I just don’t want to make any wrong steps. Do I need to bring a lawyer? Do I just pay off my bond? Is there a script I should follow when discussing this with anybody?

ETA: I move to central Wisconsin on Thursday. So great timing 🫠 additionally, the accident happened about 2 hours from where I live/work. Completely different counties and cities.

Arrested for having a migraine
Arrested for having a migraine

Location: New York State

Looking for some insight. Unfamiliar with rights and protections as a civilian.

A few weeks ago, I was driving home late at night on unfamiliar, very dark back roads. The intense headlight glare from oncoming traffic triggered a severe, sudden migraine. Recognizing that I was no longer safe to drive, I pulled over into a well lit area off the side of the road so my passenger and I could switch places.
The physical pain of the migraine caused me to vomit. While this was happening, a police officer walked up to my car. After I composed myself, I explained that I was having a severe migraine and that we had pulled over to switch drivers.

I was asked to step out of the car, blew a 0.00% on a breathalyzer and was put through field sobriety tests. I was then detained and taken to a holding station for a Drug Recognition Expert. I was read my Miranda rights, blew 0.00% a second time, and was subjected to hours of testing including light tests in a dark room that severely worsened my migraine and caused me to vomit multiple times.
Ultimately, they determined I was sober. I was released with no charges or tickets early that morning just before 4

I have now received a notice of sanction from the DMV stating my license is being suspended pending a physician's evaluation. The notice states the reason is a "motor vehicle crash where I lost consciousness" but none of that never occurred. There was no crash, no damage, no injuries, and I never lost consciousness.

I received a copy of the police report and there are many inaccuracies involving events that occurred and didn’t occur, the timeline of when things happened, things left out completely etc

I am curious about past experiences and options I have moving forward? Not having my license while I wait for a neuro review (more than 6 months) will be absolutely devastating to me financially. I have never had a migraine occur while driving and pulled over as soon as it became unsafe for me to drive to be responsible and then all this happened.

Do I have any options available to slow the suspension timeline?

Was this legal for the officer to do when I had a medical emergency happening and a safe, sober person to drive me home?

I appreciate any help and advice available! Thanks in advance!

Update: Thank you everyone for the incredible advice. I am taking the warnings on here very seriously and trying to move fast. I have limited knowledge on these things so all advice is appreciated!

I have taken detailed walk around videos and photos of my car to prove there is absolutely zero impact damage or paint transfer regarding the crash claims.

Legal and Medical Next Steps: I am currently looking into my legal representation options to handle the DMV side of this, which is proving to be a bit of a challenge as no charges were filed and I don’t have a court date. Many lawyers are saying they don’t handle my type of case. I did call the DMV and they said my only option would be to submit a completed medical form, which would need to be completed by a neurologist. As I don’t have one and need an intake those appointments are booking six months or more out at clinics up to two hours away. My primary doctor has told me they require a neurology review and cannot fill out the paperwork despite me saying I never lost consciousness and having a documented history with me never having any neurological issues where a migraine has caused these problems.

I would absolutely be willing to get bodycam footage as it will completely contradict the written report if I can get representation willing to do so.

My passenger passed a breathalyzer and confirmed my migraine and why we parked as well. I didn’t know this until after I was released.

Not Driving: I am a very cautious driver and will not be driving until I am sure this is resolved completely. It’s going to be incredibly stressful financially but I’d rather err on the side of caution in this case.

Daughters Grandparents won’t allow me to see her.

Ever since my daughter(8) was born she’s lived with her mother and her parents. I’ve always gotten her 3 days a week and paid for everything 50/50. We never had a custody agreement in writing since our schedule always worked. My ex and I were both addicts before our daughter was born but got clean after. This year my ex has relapsed and now her parents have taken over at their house. We have started to notice that my daughter has started to have issues being corrected and always wants us to take her back to her grandparents house when she doesn’t get her way. Now these last few weeks my daughter’s grandmother has texted me that first she had a uti so she couldn’t come to my house. Then she had an ear infection and couldn’t come over. Then she was sick. Then she said my daughter didn’t want to come up because she doesn’t have anything to do and gets bored. I’m honestly sick of the excuses. Obviously as a dad I don’t want to take her out of the house that she’s grown up in and I don’t want to be difficult but I want to see my daughter. Location: Maryland

Location: Texas, US
Long post, but I'm genuinely lost here and really need advice.

The rental: Rented a 2025 Mazda3 from Enterprise, April 16–20, 2026. Returned it on time, no issues flagged at the counter, car ran perfectly fine the entire time and there was not even a single scratch.
Two days later, I get a call saying the car was "flood inspected" and they found water in the spare tire compartment. Their proof? Small blue test cards they stuck around the trunk, spare tire well and floor mats some partially wet, some not. It had been raining the day I returned the car, so obviously there's going to be some wetness around door sills and trunk edges. I never drove through a flooded road, no warning lights ever came on, nothing.

The bill: They sent an "invoice" for $15,195.40 (Actual Cash Value $22,827.40, minus a $7,925 salvage credit, plus fees). Their paperwork lists the "Date of Loss" as 04/19 — a day before I even returned the car. Their own photos have handwritten notes on the windshield dated 4/23 and 4/27, and their official damage valuation report wasn't even generated until 06/09/2026 almost 7 weeks after I returned the vehicle. So there's this huge unexplained gap between when I dropped it off and when they actually did whatever inspection led to this claim.

The other wrinkle: I booked using a company discount code (a university code, I'm not an employee there, I used my friend's code) that includes a damage waiver. When Enterprise first called about the flood thing, they told me they were fine covering it under that damage waiver. Now they've flipped and are asking me to file through my own insurance (Geico) or pay out of pocket, presumably because they realized I wasn't actually eligible for that coupon code or associated with the university.

Where I'm at:
I have Geico but I'm worried filing a claim tanks my premium for something I genuinely didn't do.
I have literally have not drove the car in the water and any flood. I don't think a partially wet paper towel and a week-plus-long gap in their timeline is solid proof of anything.
Has anyone successfully disputed one of these "flood damage" claims? Does the timeline gap actually matter, or am I reading too much into it?
Any advice, similar experiences, or things I should be doing right now would help a lot.

Custody Divorce and Family

After being married for over 20 years, my husband had an affair and left our family ( children are home, but over 18) to be with his affair partner. Our divorce was finalized last August in Florida.

I earn about 4 times what he does. During the divorce, he agreed not to seek alimony and not to pursue any portion of my 401(k). He said he felt guilty because he was the one who had the affair and left the family, and he didn’t think it was right to ask me for alimony or half of my retirement. He doesn’t have a 401(k) of his own.

Recently, I learned through my ex’s sister that he changed his mind. Apparently, his affair partner is upset that he walked away without getting alimony or part of my 401(k), and now she’s pushing him to go after both.

From the outside, we had what looked like a great life. nice house, nice cars, and great vacations. His affair partner shared that( his words) she wants that life style and didn’t realize that I was the one funding most of that lifestyle because I earned significantly more than he did.

My question is: Since our divorce has already been finalized in Florida, can he come back now and try to get alimony or part of my 401(k) after agreeing not to pursue either during the divorce? Has anyone dealt with something similar?

Accidentally Sold Cigarettes to a Minor. I have a Court Date Now. What Do I Do?

Location: Northern Ohio, United States
I was working the register of my job at the beginning of the month. It was extremely busy and I was suffering with what I would later learn was a severely torn shoulder muscle and in extreme pain as a result.
The customer in question was a woman who looked to be in her thirties, and our store has a general “If they look thirty or older, you dont have to card them” policy. Given how busy it was, and that I was desperate to get some ice for my shoulder, u proceeded as normal and gave her the cigarettes she asked for. She paid and left, then about a half hour later two officers cornered me while I was cleaning the countertops. Unfortunately, the woman in question was actually a seventeen year old girl working with the police to perform a sting operation.
I was cornered by the police, given a ticket to sign, and a court date. In the process, the officer writing the ticket strictly instructed me that it was in my best interest to plead guilty, or else things “might not turn out so good.”
It’s a little embarrassing, but I’ve never been in trouble with the law in my life and ended up having an anxiety attack over the shock of the situation. To clarify, I did not swear at or attack the officers, nor did I try to run or argue with them. I merely cried and hyperventilated. The officer writing the ticket warned me to stop or else they would have reason to cuff and apprehend me.
My court date is soon and I’m terrified of what will happen. I’m facing a fourth degree misdemeanor and I’m terrified of the fine and anything that could potentially happen to my record.
Is pleading guilty the only option? Is there anything I can do besides plead guilty?

Seller lied to us about the roof. Now it needs replacing.
Seller lied to us about the roof. Now it needs replacing.
Real Estate law

Location: West Virginia

Hey everyone- sad to be here, but hoping to get some advice.

My husband and I just bought our first home. We bought it as is, with contingencies and right to terminate after inspection. Now, throughout this process, we asked the sellers how old the roof is. We have two small kids and buying our first home has been expensive, so we wanted to be sure no major repairs would be needed immediately upon move in. When asked the age of the roof, they told our realtor who told us it was replaced in the last 12 years.

Now, a few days ago we had a rainstorm and noticed wet spots on our ceiling... Including some that had previously been painted over. None of this was mentioned to us by the seller, and it's not anywhere in the property documents where they're supposed to disclose previously known issues in the home. We contacted a roofer who came to look, and he told us it's an original roof, so it's actually about 20 years old, and has never been replaced. But needs replacing. Despite what the seller said. (our inspector didn't find any of this either)

Our realtor is telling us there is nothing he can do, and that we need to contact an attorney. We were hoping he could at least help us work something out with the seller, but he is being pretty dodgy and seems to want to be done with us now that the sale has finished. Money is tight, so we're just lost on the best course of action.

What should we do?

Edit: Thanks everyone for all the tips and advice, we sincerely appreciate it! We're reading and talking through everything. I'm on kid duty today so I won't be able to respond much more, but thank you again! This has really been helpful.

Location: Oklahoma

Update from the original post. The company is family owned, ran by the dad but the son does most of the labor. The son sent us an updated invoice now totaling $2400. Said they did us a favor earlier by not charging the full amount. Only when we questioned the amount they sent us the new invoice. When speaking with the dad, we were told the son said we were not going to pay. We told them we never said we intended to not pay, but we didn’t believe the total was correct since they never informed us of the price increase before completing work.
After a 40 minute conversation after being interrupted and talked over multiple times, they asked what we thought a fair amount would be. We said we would pay the original $600 + chemical cost. They told us they would talk it over and get back with us.
After hanging up, they texted they would accept $1200 even thought they were losing money($1000= the $600 + $400 for chemicals) we again said we would pay the $1000. THEN they said they would accept the $1000 if we left them a 5 STAR review! We told them that is unethical practice and we would not. They then sent us an apology, said no review was necessary, and they will accept the $1000 equaling the previous quote of $600 plus the $400 for chemicals.
We’re waiting on the updated invoice now. I’m super eager to put this behind us. Wanted to update in case anyone was super interested, thanks for all the responses and helpful advice.

Parents say I’m legally supposed to live at home even though i’m 18
Juvenile and Youth Law

I live in Texas and just recently turned 18 this May. I moved out of my parents home with no warning because of their very strict and religious household to a friends house who is 21. My parents are now telling me that they called a family lawyer and that the lawyer told them that legally, I must remain living at home until I turn 19 because I’m under their medicaid and have gotten therapy in the past for PTSD from a car accident and if I don’t return, the friend I moved in with could get into legal trouble. Is this true? I have never heard of such thing. I’ve only gone to therapy once and don’t struggle with any PTSD symptoms anymore. I’m afraid my friend will get into legal trouble. My parents also mentioned they’d get into trouble because we would hang out when I was still 17 as well. Is this true?

Landlord Tenant Housing

Location: Virginia. My landlord gave my router password to my two neighbors, one in February one in May, and included internet in their leases. She also has connected two cameras and a floodlight. I hadn't noticed since I don't go into my router setting often. A few weeks ago when the internet was lagging so I reset it and noticed a bunch of devices I didn't recognize. I paused all of the devices which prompted my downstairs neighbor to reach out to be asking if I was also experiencing an internet outage. She showed me a screenshot of the error that was on her TV and it had my network at the top. I then reach out to my other neighbor and he told me he was given my network information as well.

She had my password due to me being nice and allowing her to connect her work computer last year to take a meeting. I never gave her permission to give my network to a third parties.

I sent her an email 10 days ago requesting reimbursement for the 5 moths of internet, but as expected, she didn't respond.

I've never sued anyone before and I want to take legal action here out of principle. I'm not sure where to go from here or if it's worth the time. Thoughts?

My coworker is falsifying patient records and my floor supervisor told me to "let it go." What are my legal obligations?

Location: Ohio

I'm an RN at a mid-sized hospital. About six weeks ago I noticed something off in a patient's chart. A collegue I've worked with for years had documented administering a specific medication at a time when I know with certainty she wasn't on shift. I initially assumed it was a clerical mistake.

Over the next few weeks I saw the same pattern multiple times. Same person, same type of entries, always involving controlled substances.

I brought this to my floor supervisor two weeks ago. She listened, said the matter was being "looked into internally," and then yesterday pulled me aside and told me it probably wasn't worth pursuing. That documentation errors happen. That making formal complaints could "complicate things for the unit."

I don't belive these are errors. The pattern is too deliberate.

My questions: if I report this directly to the Ohio Board of Nursing or another external agency without going through internal channels first, can the hospital legally retaliate against me? Is there any whistleblower protection that applies here? And at what point does knowing about this and not reporting it externally create legal exposure for me personally?

I'm not trying to get anyone fired. I just want to understand what I'm actually obligated to do here.

My employer requires us to clock out before a 20-minute security screening and says the waiting time is not compensable. California

location: California

I work at a distribution warehouse with around 150 employees. Last month, managment introduced mandatory security screenings at the end of every shift. We must clock out first, join a line, empty our pockets, open our bags, and sometimes wait while security checks several people more thoroughly.

The screening itself takes only a minute or two, but the line usually adds 15 to 20 minutes. On busy evenings I have waited almost half an hour. We are not allowed to leave through another exit or skip the inspection.

Several employees asked whether we could stay clocked in until after the screening. HR said the checks happen after our work is finished, so the time is personal and unpaid. A supervisor also warned us not to delay clocking out.

Does California law require the company to pay us for this waiting and screening time? Can they legally discipline employees who remain clocked in until the inspection is complete?

Georgia neighbor wants to connect to our fence over three feet into our property line
Georgia neighbor wants to connect to our fence over three feet into our property line

Location: Georgia

Question: Should I allow my neighbor to attach to our fence which is inside our property line?

When the previous owner had our property fenced, they put the fence approximately 38” inside our property line at the front and over 9 feet in the back. There is a culvert coming from the street (taking water from the street and diverting it into a ditch and then into wastewater I assume) that is buried and opens up into a ditch about halfway down the back of our property. This area is sloped and rocky and not really usable. This was never an issue as the previous next door neighbor didn’t care about fencing in his property. He has since passed away and that property has sold to someone with a dog and they are interested in fencing in their property. They want to attach a permanent fence to our fence. When the new owner (Brady) mentioned that he wanted to attach to our fence, I didn’t say yes or no, I said I would need to talk to my husband. Next thing I knew, he had created a temporary fence and attached it to a stake he inserted into the ground next to our corner post well within our property line.

A few days later, I was out walking my dog with his daughter (who lives in the neighborhood) and he joined us with his dog and I overheard him tell his daughter that he was going to have a fence guy here the next morning. Luckily I heard this and mentioned to him that our property line extends past our fence post and if he fences that in, he would essentially be fencing in a portion of our property and it could be an issue. He asked if he could sign something stipulating an agreement. I am uncomfortable with that for a number of reasons.

  1. Liability. If someone is injured on that property, we could be liable.

  2. Taxes. We would be paying taxes on property we don’t have access to.

  3. Maintenance. Who would be responsible for maintaining the property?

  4. Most importantly: Future problems when one of us goes to sell. If he sells, he probably won’t want to take down or move his permanent fence and we may not want to grant the new owner the same access we have given to Brady and his wife. If we sell, potential new owners may not be comfortable with the agreement with Brady and his wife.

Are there other issues I should consider that I haven't mentioned above?

Brady’s daughter lives in the neighborhood and I am good friends with her. I like her parents and have even had Thanksgiving with them. I don’t want to be difficult, but I also don’t want to create a problem for us down the road when one of us sells.

With regard to the culvert-the county comes by periodically to inspect the culvert to ensure it remains clear to prevent flooding. So one question is, can that easement be fenced in?

My husband doesn’t think it would be any big deal to let them fence in the property. I am trying to be proactive in preventing a future problem(s) and expense(s) down the road. Husbands thought: You are creating a problem now to prevent a problem in twenty years that isn’t going to happen. Its ridiculous!

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

New building's exhaust vents into my roof deck: What can I do? (Chicago)
New building's exhaust vents into my roof deck: What can I do? (Chicago)

Location: Chicago, IL

I own a condo in a 10 unit condo building.

A new condo building is being constructed next door to me, and all 10 of their exhaust vents point straight into our outdoor roof deck. They could have pointed the exhaust in any other direction along the perimeter of their building; my roof deck is the only roof deck next to their building.

I don't want compensation for the vents; I want these vents rerouted so I can enjoy my outdoor space. I'm concerned about the safety of the exhaust as well as the aesthetic impact - they are a huge eyesore.

I have already contacted the construction company (no response), my alderman, and filed a 311 complaint about the exhaust vents.

In addition to the roof deck vent, ongoing illegal activity related to this construction includes:

  1. Unmitigated silica dust (modern day asbestos) which I have reported to 311 and the alderman. I have a video of workers cutting of bricks & cinder blocks with no capture or ventilation; including plumes of dust coming onto my balcony. My toddler was exposed to this.

  2. Permanent damage to our structures, including permanent rust-like substance on our aluminum balcony, mud-like substance on the side of our building that we can see out of our bedroom windows, and outdoor furniture destroyed with dust and mud like substances

  3. Storage of dangerous materials on our balcony without our consent, which our toddler has access to

  4. Documented trespassing on our private roof deck and balcony without our permission

We have not used our balcony or roof deck since April due to the dangerous conditions resulting from this construction.

A repossession company took the utility trailer I legally bought because the previous owner still owed money
A repossession company took the utility trailer I legally bought because the previous owner still owed money

Location: Ohio

I bought a used enclosed utility trailer from a private seller about four months ago. I paid in full, got a signed bill of sale, and transferred the title into my name at a title office. I used some money I had saved to convert the inside for my small woodworking setup.

I came home and the trailer was gone from my driveway. My camera shows a tow truck taking it. I called the company and they said it was repossessed because the previous owner used it as collateral for a loan he stopped paying. I sent them a picture of the title showing my name, but they said their lien existed before I bought it and they will not return it unless the lender authorizes them.

The police looked at my paperwork but said it was probably a civil issue. I cannot reach the seller now. Can a lender legally repossess it from me even though the state transferred the title without showing any lien, and what kind of attorney would handle getting it and my equipment back?

Location: Ohio. my neighbor and i have had an ongoing property line dispute for at least 10+ years. his claim is “damages” and “destruction of his ability to have peace within his property.” his claim is that for at least 2 years up till present day i have deliberately dumped “raw sewage, human, and dog feces along the property line” also stating that i have “deliberately dumped and created water runoffs to cause it it to go in his yard”. to counter the claim of “human and dog feces”, its absolutely none of the above. its been classified as “organic compost” by the county health agent twice now. i have placed it around small trees that i placed at least 2 ft from the property line. his over exaggeration of it being “raw sewage” is absurd. it is horse manure that has dried and has not been “dumped” or “intentionally ran off with water” onto his property. he is claiming it is “damaging his property in excess of $5000” there has to be some underlying context here. there is a water runoff that starts across the street, goes under the road. that flowed into his property all the way through diagonally from north east to southwest. he deliberately raised this property 4 ft and contained this water flow. stopped the flow, and left a 4ft culvert along the property line to use this water to over flow my entire yard and flood it. to add context of the culvert. it is next to the road across the street at the neighbors house, their house is the lowest point of that side of the road. the county code says the water has to go somewhere. he stopped this flow of water to cause this flow to pour onto my yard. he also claims the small 3 ft high dog fence i put up with T posts is “damaging his property.” which the surveyors came and marked the lines. told him it is not on his property. i’m curious of the likely hood of him winning his civil suit against me. there are so many police reports of him calling against me and he just degrades the officers verbally also straight up talking shit to them because i’m not breaking any laws for them to charge me with. over 20 reports may i mention. he’s ran out of options and now he wants to claim a civil suit against me.

Location: Virginia, I may be getting let go from my job within the next day or week. What are my rights as I discuss any compensation or severance or non-disclosure agreements?

Location: Virginia
As mentioned in the title, there’s a chance I could be let go from my creative industry job over the next week. I’ve signed paperwork and agreements a while back but nothing was a nondisclosure or non-compete type of agreement. And honestly, I have no idea what to expect in the potential meeting. But I want to make sure I know my rights before I sit down with anyone.
I have access to a lot of company information and am responsible for a lot of proprietary processes. I am not expecting to be completely cut out of things, because of how much I’ve been responsible for, but I’m not dismissing it outright.

The company is smaller, so it’s not completely corporate, but I’ve signed the typical company paperwork that I’ll review this evening. What I want to know is if they try to make me sign anything, that I know my rights. I’m sure I could ask for a lawyer present if it came to that, but I’m looking for anything I might need to know as I deal with my first potential experience of being laid off.

As I mentioned before, I work in the creative industry and want to make sure I can still do creative work after I leave.
Thanks in advance for any advice you might have. I’m also wrestling with debt that will surely be exacerbated if this happens.

They mentioned setting up the potential dismissals with the tools to succeed, and if I have any knowledge I can bring to the bargaining table, I want to be well equipped. I have a family to take care of and no savings, so I definitely need to cover my tail here. In whatever way I can…

Thanks.

It sounds more dramatic than it is. I made a simple looking caricature design for someone online, I often enjoy doing them for free to hone my skill and make people happy (though I do ask them if they want to donate or tip me for the work that goes to a project I'm doing on my free time). Anyway, I made the design and sent him the pdf in good faith (he said he would tip but didnt). 3 days later he came back to me asking if a local band he likes can use my work for their merchandise because he apparently talked to the lead singer. I was elated because not only could I profit, but I could also help a band, I love punk. When I told him I would need legal documents, he said he would write one up and was confused since I had my signature on the design already...despite not knowing how copyright works...and when I told him they would need my permission on a legal document, he threw a fit and said he would just do it anyway, saying he had the og pdf. Do I have grounds to sue if the band actually does use it for merch? I just contacted them but didn't get a response yet. I doubt they will, but you never know. Hope this was an entertaining melodrama, but I'm genuinely confused.

Son died with $6000 of Digital Assets on Steam storefront - how to access?
Son died with $6000 of Digital Assets on Steam storefront - how to access?

Location: North Carolina, USA

So my 26yr son passed away. He was an avid gamer and bought and sold "skins" on the CSFloat/Steam marketplace.

I am now the executor of the estate and when going through his emails, it looks like he had about $6,000USD of "skins" for sale on the digital marketplace

Steam refuses to grant us access to the account, despite us sending the executorship documents from the court.

Questions:

  1. Are digital assets treated legally as real assets by US courts?

  2. Can we sue? If so - worth the effort?

  3. Any other way to get access to the account or transfer the "skins"?

Any advice most appreciated

Maintenance seemingly dodging our requests to fix our A/C
Maintenance seemingly dodging our requests to fix our A/C
Landlord Tenant Housing

Location: Florida

For context, our A/C has always had troubles and for the past 2 weeks I have had to put in 4 different requests to have them come out because whatever they end up doing doesn't ultimately solve the problem and the A/C ends up freezing and having the same issues.

Two days ago I put in another request and per protocol I called the office to let them know that our A/C is out as they describe this as an emergency issue. They said they would send someone down that day and no one came. The next day I called again and they seemed to be shocked no one came, and said someone would be there. What would you know, no one came again.

Today they finally came and after looking at it for a minute they left and didn't come back and didn't say they were going to have to order a part or go check something, they just left. I called the office hours later to get an update on the situation and they seemed to not be aware and said someone would come back, and in typical fashion no one has come back.

In our lease they state that, "RESPONSIBILITIES OF OWNER. We'll act with customary diligence to:
(2) maintain fixtures, furniture, hot water, heating and A/C equipment"
and that, "If we violate any of the above or other material provisions of the lease, you may terminate this Lease Contract and exercise other remedies under state statute only as follows: (a) you must make a written request for repair, maintenance, or remedy of the condition to us, specifying how we have failed to comply with Florida law or with the material provisions of this lease and indicating your intention to terminate the lease if the violation is not corrected within seven (7) days after delivery of the notice; (b) after receiving the request, we have a reasonable time to repair or remedy the condition, considering the nature of the problem and the reasonable availability of materials, labor, and utilities; (c) if our failure to comply with Florida law or material provisions of the rental agreement is due to causes beyond our control and we have made and continue to make every reasonable effort to correct the failure to comply, you may also exercise other statutory remedies."

I'm curious what the next step should be and if it is providing a written notice how would I go about that and what does that entail? And is there anything I can do in the meantime to remedy the situation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I was scolded today for “only” arriving 10 minutes early to my work shift- My manager says that I should be arriving 15-20 minutes early each day instead, unpaid. Is this legal?
Employment Law

Location: NY (Not NYC)

Context: I am an hourly wage worker who has been working for this company for a little over 2 years now, but have just recently moved to a new sector under a different, regional operation team, as well as a different reporting manager.
I am scheduled, according to my new contract, to report for work during my scheduled time for 40 hours a week at base pay, with any additional time being paid at an appropriate time-and-a-half rate.

At all of my previous locations, I have been allowed and encouraged to use our ADP app to clock into work the moment we have parked in the building lot, as well as clocking out the moment we exit the building; as up until those points we are expected to preform our opening/closing procedures that include surveying the building and surrounding area before and after entering the premises for security reasons.

I have always done my best to arrive 5-10 minutes earlier than scheduled simply as a courtesy to my team, and I have always been thanked and properly compensated for doing so in the past.

However, this morning, I was scolded by my new manger for not arriving 15-20 minutes earlier than scheduled, and for clocking-in using our app when I first arrived on site as I had always done before; as he said there was quote “no justification“ for me doing that and even claiming that he could get in trouble with upper management for allowing me to collect on “unapproved overtime.”

He has since adjusted all of my time cards from this past week up until today to reflect the time that I was exclusively scheduled for, despite me, and many of my fellow colleagues, arriving and beginning our work earlier than that, as asked.

When I inquired about why he had done this, and argued for my right to be compensated for my time worked just as I had been without issue at all previous locations, especially if I was to be expected to arrive earlier than scheduled and work an additional 1 1/2 hours each week, his only rebuttal was “That’s not how we do things around here. You should be thinking of the team, not yourself. If everyone decided to show up exactly at the time they were scheduled for we would never finish opening operations on time.“

I am very upset about this situation and unsure about what I can do about it, as I fear possible retaliation if I were to reach out to HR or if I do not comply with my manger’s request.

What can I do?

Found out that the woman who told me she'd aborted her pregnancy months ago lied and may be seeking child support when the baby arrives.

Location: Maryland

Back in January, I slept with a woman who informed me she was pregnant two weeks later. We communicated and eventually agreed she would abort the pregnancy, which I sent her money for. Later on, she told me she'd actually had a miscarriage rather than gotten the abortion, but that it was done regardless. Two days ago, I found out that she'd been lying and was actually still pregnant the entire time. She's flipped between telling me she's seeking child support and then telling me she doesn't want anything from me. I'm in a state of shock, having seen her a couple weeks ago and she didn't look pregnant, along with witnessing her consuming alcohol, as well as telling me she was drunk or going to do drunks on another occasion, which I took as further confirmation she definitely wasn't pregnant.

I recognize that if my paternity is confirmed I'll be required to pay support, I'm just wondering what my next steps should be and if the facts of this case might alter circumstances in any capacity. Thank you.

My deceased dad's wife is trying to claim his life insurance even though he changed the beneficiary to me 6 months before he died. She's threatening to sue.

Location: Florida

This has been going on for 2 months and im just exhausted at this point. My dad passed in January, he had a $200k life insurance policy through MetLife. Back in July of last year he updated the beneficiary from his wife (they were married 4 years, not my mom) to me. I have the confirmation letter, MetLife confirmed the change was processed, everything looks legitimate.

My dad and his wife had been having serious problems, she knew it too. He never filed for divorce but they were basically separated under the same roof. He told me directly he was changing it and why.

MetLife already approved the claim and I received the payout last month. I used part of it to cover funeral costs which she refused to split, and put the rest in savings alongside with the Ѕtake money for now because this whole thing felt off from the start.

Now she has an attorney sending letters saying she intends to sue me claiming my dad "lacked mental capacity" when he made the change and that I "unduly influenced" him. He was 61, had Type 2 diabetes, no dementia, no psychiatric history, was still working full time when he made the change.

The undue influence claim is insane to me because I live in a different state, I saw him maybe 4 times that year. We were close but it wasnt like I was his caretaker or had any control over his life.

Do these claims have any actual legal merit or is this just a scare tactic from a grieving woman with a lawyer? Should I get an attorney now before this goes further or wait to see if she actually files anything?

UPS totaled my truck while it was parked in my home!

Location: Texas

The UPS driver was apparently blinded by the sun; he overshot the turn and rammed his truck into mine. My truck has all types of damage in the frame, differential, parking lights are out. UPS declared it a total loss, however, it can definitely get fixed. My dad has been a diesel mechanic for decades and it's going to cost a little over $4,000 to fix everything based on his estimates. They're offering a stupid low amount of $2,500 for the "actual cash value" of my truck that they completely wrecked in the first place. Now, I understand my 07 Ford is old, but my god I put a lot of money and work into that truck. I took such good care of it and for them to offer 2.5k feels like a joke.

I'm still in college and broke. This amount of money just doesn't seem fair. My truck was parked at my own home, i had no fault. I may sound like a scumbag for not wanting to accept their amount, but what am i supposed to do with 2.5k and no vehicle.

Contractor quite because I asked for measurements to submit to insurance
Contractor quite because I asked for measurements to submit to insurance
Contracts

Location: St. Louis, MO

Scope: Stage materials, hang and finish drywall, and paint

Issues: I had a drywall contractor come out and quote the above scope. When he was onsite for his quote, I was only a quarter of the way through installing insulation. While I was installing insulation, his guys cut and delivered drywall and were scheduled to hang and finish later that week.

While working through the insulation, I found severely damaged cloth wire, so I notified him I had to pause work and have an electrician re-wire our entire second floor. I also asked for an additional quote to demo a half bath and closet on the same floor.

Fast forward to yesterday, I received a notice from my insurance company they wouldn't approve the additional scope without measurements. He had a meltdown over email and stated the material hard costs were around $900, he proceeded to shit on my insurance company (fair), and then said there were too many emails and he was walking away from the job and that I owe him $2,000 for labor hours to cut and stage drywall / materials, project management hours, site visits, and gas (this includes the $900 materials fee).

His guys did not cut all of the sheets to his specs to fit up our narrow stairs, so they damaged corners on quite a bit of the drywall sheets, ripped chunks out of the mineral insulation I installed, and chipped some paint off the trim. He is aware this happened, but I did not make a fuss out of it at the time, because I get that our stairs are tight.

Question: Does that seem reasonable? When I authorized the work, there were no line items or details, just a total. The total project was going to cost $5,000 and I am not sure if $1,100 in labor, gas, and PM hours is reasonable. Do you just pay in a situation like this? I don't want to overpay because he had an emotional meltdown over measurements, but now I have to find a drywall contractor willing to work with the material he staged and cut and hope they accept this.

Worth noting, in Missouri, a contractor can put a mechanics lien on your house for unpaid work. Really just frustrated since this guy put me in a tough spot.

Can someone sell land I own out from underneath me?
Can someone sell land I own out from underneath me?

Location: Ohio, USA

A realtor called me and left a message saying that someone recently called her and asked her to list some land I own. She said that something felt off about the conversation, so she looked up the property on the tax assessor's website, found my name as the owner, and then found my phone number online. Is it possible for someone to scam a buyer into believing they are buying this land and for that to somehow cause me issues or the possible loss of the property? I emailed the realtor but haven't heard back yet duev to the holiday weekend. I also contacted the sheriff, and he instructed me to get in touch with the recorders office so they can set up an alert in case someone tries to list it. Is there anything else I need to do in this situation? I'm going to try and get the contract information off the person who contacted the realtor of I can. The sheriff also said that I can get a police (sherrif's?) report on the matter so that it is documented.

I'm 20 and my mother is trying to confiscate property I purchased. What are my legal rights?
I'm 20 and my mother is trying to confiscate property I purchased. What are my legal rights?
Canada

Location: Ontario, Cnada

I live with my parents, and I'm turning 20 in a few months

Since I was 13, my mom has enforced an 8:00M curfew on all of my electronic devices by taking them away every night. This has continued into adulthood.

About a year ago, I started paying my own phone bill, although my parents originally opened the account and purchased the phone I currently use.

Some time ago, I bought a second phone with my own money so I could use it after 8 PM. When my mom found it, she threw it, shattering it, and became physically aggressive with me. I did not report the incident to police.

Recently, my laptop stopped working, so I purchased a new one myself with my own money because I need it for university.

Tonight, my mom attempted to take my laptop at 8:00PM as usual. I told her no because I own it and paid for it myself. She responded that she wasn't asking, she was telling me. I refused again.

She repeatedly got in my face, threatened me, and told me I would regret refusing her. She ultimately walked away without taking it.

I'm trying to understand my legal rights in Ontario.

My questions are:

  • Since I'm an adult and paid for the laptop myself, does she have any legal right to confiscate it because I live in her house?

  • If she takes it anyway or damages it, what legal options would I have?

  • If she becomes physically aggressive again, what should I do to protect myself legally?

  • Aside from moving out, is there anything else I should be doing to protect myself and my property?

I'm aware that moving out is likely the long-term solution, but I'm not currently in a financial position to do so and have been staying to help my family after my mom recently lost her job.

Ex partner is filing chapter 7, leaving me with $24k in debt
Ex partner is filing chapter 7, leaving me with $24k in debt
Credit Debt Bankruptcy

I'll try to make this simple:

  1. I cosigned a car loan of $24k and a debt consolidation loan of $10k for my partner of 10 years in early 2025. We were not married.

  2. He decided to leave me the very next month after I co-signed.

  3. For the last year and a half he has paid his payments but has recently fallen behind and ive had to pick up some slack.

  4. He is now filing for chapter 7.

Based on my understanding, im now pretty much screwed, but I wanted to see what options, if any, I might have to fight it.

Scratch-off ticket is a winner, but state lottery won't accept it.
Scratch-off ticket is a winner, but state lottery won't accept it.

Location: OR, US.

Essentially, I bought a scratch-off lottery ticket from a retailer. It was in a machine that I think is maintained directly by the lottery people, not the store.

The ticket is a winner, and enough so that I can't redeem at a store, but only in person at the lottery commission.

However, they are refusing to accept it because they claim it has been "already redeemed." This is blatantly untrue, as well as physically impossible. I got it straight from the machine, and it had no scratching on it, so it couldn't have been redeemed because the barcode had never been exposed before.

If this were a small amount, $5 or $10, I wouldn't care enough to fight with the state about it.

But this is 5 figures and I'm not leaving without the money they owe me.

What are my legal next steps? How can I get the state to pay the money that they owe me, preferably without having to waste it all on expensive legal fees?

Someone took my car after I let them borrow it. Cops stated I cannot report a stolen vehicle
Someone took my car after I let them borrow it. Cops stated I cannot report a stolen vehicle

Location: Texas

Hello all!

I let an acquaintance who was doing some work on my house borrow my car for an unspecified period of time as they said their car was in the shop. Since then, they have racked up toll bills incredibly high, and on repeatedly asking for them to give me my car back, they have stopped responding to me.

I called the non-emergency line, and a cop came to talk to me. They stated that they could not file for a stolen vehicle since there was no formal agreement or contract stating when he would need to return the car back to me, and that I would have to go through the justice of the peace and start a civil case in order to get my car back.

This does not sound right to me- he will not give me my property back for the weeks that I have asked for it. Is it true that I cannot file a report for it being stolen? Also, I have an extra key and might know where he lives. Would there be any ramifications if I were to go to his place and get my car back?

Thank you guys in advance, I’m kind of at a loss for what to do next.

25F New landlords now say our driveway is shared and we can only have one car???

Landlord Tenant Housing

Location: Cohoes NY USA

My boyfriend just walked in with a letter that was posted to our door which read:

“Date: July 15, 2026

Dear Tenant,

This letter serves as a final notice regarding the unauthorized vehicles currently parked in the shared driveway.

You have been previously notified multiple times that, according to your lease agreement, you are permitted to park one (1) vehicle only in the shared driveway. At this time, you have three additional vehicles parked in violation of the lease terms and these vehicles are limiting access and parking availability for other residents.

You are required to remove the unauthorized vehicles from the shared driveway no later than Friday, July 17, 2026.

If the vehicles have not been removed by this deadline, management will arrange for the unauthorized vehicles to be towed at the vehicle owner's expense. Any costs, fees, or charges associated with the towing and removal of these vehicles will be the responsibility of the vehicle owner.

We appreciate your immediate attention to this matter and your cooperation in maintaining fair and reasonable use of the shared parking area for all residents.”

My boyfriend & his brother have been living in this apartment for years. They have never had to share the driveway, nor were they ever told that the driveway was shared, or that they can only park one car in it. The downstairs neighbors have always had street parking and upstairs neighbors had the driveway.

To my knowledge, my boyfriend & his brother haven’t been previously notified by this change in the lease, or that they had to get rid of 2 out of 3 cars. The unfortunate part is I’m now moving in, which means it’ll be my car, my boyfriend’s car, his brother’s car, and their late mother’s car. Yes there is parking on the street but parking FOUR CARS ON THE STREET…..??

Notified or not… is there a way to fight this?? Is this allowed? Can the new landlords tow cars that are parked in their own driveway?? I just need any advice you guys can give me.

My mother in law is being threatened to get fired when she's out of work from work injury
My mother in law is being threatened to get fired when she's out of work from work injury

We live in Minnesota and My MIL works at a factory and has been there for 15ish years. She recently suffered a rotator cuff tear in her shoulder. She immediately filed work comp claim and has been going to the doctor and doing everything they tell her. She needs surgery which could take months and recovery time would put her out of work at least the next 6 months. She is at home and cant do any job they find her due to the doctors orders and her job is highly labor intensive.

They have been calling and emailing her anyway to try to come back to work, they even gave her a letter to ask the doctor to sign and lift his orders and allow her to work, which we told her not to do or sign anything.

She was also prescribed antidepressants because she feels guilty and is upset about the whole situation but we're telling her to listen to us because the company has a bad reputation for treating their employees poorly. She only speaks Spanish and was ignorant of the employee rights she is given.

Now she is being told unless she comes back soon she'll be fired. Do you think this could be a case for wrongful termination?

Thank you

12 Year old being charged
12 Year old being charged

Location: Wisconsin

So just before the end if the school year my 12 year old was in library.and the teacher said.

"After you are done with your reading you can do whatever you want."

And my kid joked. "Like what, make explosives?"

Look, I know it was a dumb thing to say. You don't say that in school, EVER. And trust me, we have had talks before and LECTURES since this incedent.

But istead of making this a teaching moment to a 12 year old wise ass, the school:

Pulled him out of class

Searched his locker

Had the school resource officer question him, (without me present, so there's another layer of wrong.)

Suspended him for four days

Charged him with disorderly conduct

THEN called me.

The principle, superintendent, and cop all said they knew it was a joke and not a threat.

Still took those actions.

I'll deal with the school board later.

Today is his intake at the County Courthouse.

What can I do to show them that this child is not a threat to national security?

He has a support system, we go to church, (not that it matters,) he's a sweet kid.

I can't afford to pay my laywer now, I just got full custody, which is another kick in the pants, because now he's finally just mine and I can't afford to protect him, because I spent all my money trying to protect him.

My baby climbed into bed with me last night and cried himself to sleep.

He's terrified. I'm scared and angry.

What can we do/say to mitigate this?

Thanks for your help.

Neighbor ruined a land deal.
Neighbor ruined a land deal.

We have 15 acres for sale with a creek and pond.

We do not live on it we just occasionally fish/hunt. We’ve spent a lot of time and money improving the land and drainage since purchasing this land. We’ve cleared some acreage, cut trees, cleaned and stocked the pond, etc.

Months ago there were 3 beaver dams and a wire fence that went across the creek that had caught years of debris. This caused a decent flood.

We did a lot ourselves but also spent a few thousand dollars to have some people come out and clear it out and fix some other drainage issues. Since then we have had record rain fall and no flooding.

Fast forward, we got an offer and accepted it. Had signed contracts. Ready to get this thing sold. The buyers went out to the land again to just look around and enjoy the land. The neighbor of this land comes out and shows them old flooding pictures from before all the work we had done and they back out.

This is the second time he’s done this. What are our options? He is misrepresenting our land and screwing our business deals

Location: North Alabama

Edited to add:
we did disclose past flooding and how we fixed it to realtor to explain to buyers.

Septic problems purchased house
Septic problems purchased house

Location: Central NY

We purchased a house, used lawyer provided by our realestate agent. We did not have an inspection done, which in hindsight would have killed the deal for us. Stupid I know. We did ask for an inspection of the septic, which we had put into the contract. The seller gave us the paperwork and receipt and our lawyer was satisfied, our realtor said ok also. We closed the deal and signed everything. The same week we moved in I noticed water in the yard. Hoping it was a well I dug and hit concrete. We called the company that was on the receipts and they stated that it was never inspected and the seller did not ask for it to be. They stated that they only drained it. Along with this was a dye test which the septic company stated could not have been completed because they are usually done at the same time and with a full septic. We contacted another septic company and they inspected and stated it has been a long time that the septic was not working. The leach field was full of sand and it was back flowing into tank. And the tank was full of sand. They would not be able to repair and would need to build a raised leach field. We contacted the seller and they stated it was a done deal. We paid $40000 for the new septic. We contacted our buying lawyer and they stated they couldnt help. We contacted other lawyers and none have been willing to help because it is difficult to prove that the seller knowingly deceived. With the new septic we dont have a lot of $ to go to court. The seller has $ to fight. Do we have any recourse? Was our lawyer at fault for the contract to not be fulfilled and approving it?

Don’t let a “comprehensive inspection” fool you. On May 6th, 2026 I bought a 2017 Prius (63.5k miles) from a certified Toyota dealer, the vehicle was sold as Toyota Gold Certified. Within days, I found an active mouse nest, a failing 12V battery, and a check engine light.
PSA for buyers: Always pull the actual service history via Toyota's owners portal before buying. I learned this the hard way.
The Hidden History The Carfax only showed a gas cap replacement, and minor collision history but when I pulled the internal Toyota records, I found out why the check engine light came on 250 miles after purchase:
Right before I bought it, another dealership diagnosed an EVAP leak (P1422) and traced it to a fuel pump issue via a smoke test.

It was sold to me with no proof that the actual root cause was repaired. (None of this was disclosed)

Toyotas internal records also showed a prior history of rodent damage. I spent 10 minutes looking under the hood and found a nest still sitting right there.

Somehow, this car passed a 160-point Gold Certified inspection. I already had to fight them tooth and nail to get these initial issues covered (fuel pump and charcoal canister)
The Safety Systems & The 4-Hour Bait-and-Switch Shortly after purchase, Toyota Safety Sense began to fail intermittently(Pre-Collision, Radar Cruise, Lane Assist). I noticed the front Toyota emblem appears to be the standard raised style, not the smooth, radar-transparent emblem required for these systems.
The dealer completely dismissed the emblem. Instead, they claimed it was likely a faulty forward recognition camera. After going back and forth, the service manager told me that if I made the 4-hour drive to their dealership, they would replace the camera under "goodwill."
I made the drive and dropped the car off. They called me with the verdict on Monday; it’s the camera overheating and they’re submitting it under a platinum plan warranty even though I have gold. I didn’t hear anything Tuesday and assumed all was well

WELL… they called me back today turns out
They are reneging on the goodwill repair. They want $2,000 out-of-pocket for the repair.
When I pushed back and reminded them of our explicit agreement to get me in the door, the Service Manager was incredibly rude, condescending, and actually told me, "Let's talk like adults."
Where I Am At Now I have a Gold Certified car with compromised safety systems, a dealer who lied to get me to drive 4 hours, and a $2k ransom bill on a vehicle that never should have passed certification in the first place.
I’ve escalated to Toyota Corporate Brand Engagement, considering BBB paperwork due to the arbitration contact I signed, and I am considering drafting my complaint to the Wisconsin Attorney General.
Questions:
The dealer said the camera was physically hot to hold, to my understanding once that camera is removed from the housing recalibration is REQUIRED.. unfortunately I don’t have enough money for the repair but the system was working intermittently, now the safety features may not work at all if the calibration is off
Has anyone successfully forced a dealer to honor a promised "goodwill" repair after a bait-and-switch like this?

Shouldn't a failed safety camera or an incorrect radar component be fully covered under the Toyota CPO comprehensive warranty anyway?
How did this vehicle even manage to get “gold certification”…
If I would have known about the prior history of rodent damage I would not have bought the car…
When I questioned the sales department about the history of the vehicle they told me they don’t look at the service records for active issues, only fix what can be seen
So my question really is, how does the arbitration process usually go in IL?

She had some mice eat through the firewall and nest in her dash. Repair costs started at $1.2k, her old plan deductible was 2k.

She decided not to pay out of pocket, and also decided not to submit the claim on her old plan. Instead she changed to a $100 deductible plan, and called the insurance company about repairs a few days later.

Today she received an email assuredly from their fraud department requesting a recorded interview.

She asked for my help, but I'm no position to give advice as I know nothing about this stuff. Seems to me that she can cooperate, be transparent, and hope for clemency. Or lawyer up (which we can't afford).

Insurance company sent Affadavit to Elderly Father
Insurance company sent Affadavit to Elderly Father
Personal Injury

Location: In state of Illinois

Hi - a few weeks ago, my elderly father hit a parked trailer that was attached to a parked truck, with a very minor dent to the tailgate/bumper. He was not sure if anyone was in the truck, as his airbag went off and he did not see anyone exit.

He received a ticket, no medical help was called, no one appeared injured, we are waiting on a police report. About a week ago, his insurance adjuster sent him an affidavit from the lawyer of someone (not the owner of the truck) claiming to have been injured in the accident (neck and back). The affadavit is mostly clear, except it requires that my father acknowledge his fault, and that the ”injured” is not willing to accept the insurance policy limits (even though no claims have been made yet).

We have contacted a lawyer, who contacted the insurance company to ask for representation. The insurance company just said that my father does not need to sign if he does not feel comfortable and that they are handling any claims at the moment.

I’m super confused as to why this affidavit was sent so quickly if there are no claims yet, and do we need to take any action.

Thank you for any help!

A random guy dressed like a delivery driver showed up to my uncles house looking for me. He was dressed like a delivery driver but had a badge on his vest. He was driving a regular car. He said he was a delivery driver, and when my uncle asked him can I have your contact info he said he’s just the delivery driver. When my uncle told him I don’t live there, he said I should update my address(I have never lived at that house, and have never claimed that address, my address has been unchanged for years and is correct) then he began asking my uncle if I live in a house or apartment, what town.

Once I found out I was worried and looked up any cases in my county or the 2 adjacent counties, and I found nothing.
Should I be worried? What steps should I take to be prepared for whatever this is?

Florida landlord claims my lease was made under clerical error, and has served me a 3-day notice
Florida landlord claims my lease was made under clerical error, and has served me a 3-day notice
Landlord Tenant Housing

Location: Florida

Hello, I am in Florida, and on June 24th at 11 am, I signed a 7-month lease for an apartment. The leasing portal advertised an amount of $1,120 a month for 7-months. I received a quote in my email on June 21st stating 1,120 a month for 7-months, and the lease that I had signed says 1,120 a month for 7-months. The landlord is now telling me that it was all a mistake, and because it's a short-term lease, there should've been an extra charge of $100 on every month.

The lease also listed a concession for free rent in July and January, which they are also telling me was a mistake and was never intended for anything less than 12 months. About 4 hours after signing my lease on June 24th at 3 pm, I received a Welcome Home Letter. Management is using this as evidence that the lease terms had been a result of a clerical error, as it lists 12 months, but also lists $1,120 for rent, and the July and January concessions.

I moved in on June 25th. On July 7th, management contacted me claiming the lease was a mistake, and has now demanded I sign a new lease to remove the concessions and take the rent increase, or keep the concessions and current rate but take a longer lease for 12 months.

They had also given me a notice to pay on July 7th, before we had conversed about this dispute later that day, which had ended without reaching an agreement, where I said I wouldn't sign a new lease, and they declined my proposal before asking me to leave the office.

I cannot agree to a 12-month lease, and I don't agree that any increased rent is due.

I am not really sure in the direction I should take right now. I've taken screenshots of the application portal showing the rate that I was advertised, I have the lease, welcome home letter, quote, and notice.

From my understanding, the lease I signed is the agreement that controls, but I don't know if the management has a claim to amend it. So I have a couple of questions regarding my situation because this is very overwhelming for me cause I have never had a legal dispute before:

  1. Are Florida landlords able to make retroactive changes to a lease under the claim of a clerical error in this situation?

  2. On July 7th, I was given a 3-day notice to pay $1,355 in backed rent or vacate. How should I handle that while we are under an ongoing dispute? I met the leasing agent who gave it to me, but I guess she wasn't expecting me to be home because she said to meet her later that day, and I could just throw the paper away. I didn't, but I don't know where it stands.

  3. Should I just sit and wait for them to escalate to legal action first, or is there something I could do now to try and prepare for that?

Yesterday, I went in person to demand it back. The owner admitted they accidentaly shipped my laptop to another customer on the other side of the country. They cannot recover it because that customer is not responing.

The owner is refusing to pay for a replacement. He is only offering a very old, used laptop from his backroom. Can I sue in small claims court for the replacement cost?

My company gives BIPOC and admin staff the day off for Juneteenth (WA state)
My company gives BIPOC and admin staff the day off for Juneteenth (WA state)
Employment Law

Location: Washington state, working for a nonprofit, been in my role for 3 years.

I want to start by saying this is not a complaint about Juneteenth, or however people choose to celebrate, or anything else. Obviously Juneteenth is not about me as a white person and that's not the point of this post. Hopefully that's an unnecessary disclaimer.

So here we go.

I work for a homeless services nonprofit in WA. On Juneteenth, all BIPOC staff get the day off if they choose. They have the option to work for holiday pay rates (time and a half) but are not required. White people have to work. We do get holiday pay for the day. Except...

My company has 2 buildings. One is the administration office, and the second is a direct service shelter/food bank. I work at the shelter building. Regardless of race, everyone at the admin office takes the day off. At the shelter, we have 6 staff (5 staff and boss). 3 of the staff are POC, and boss takes the day cause it's a company holiday (she's white, but leadership gets all holidays automatically, same as admin building). So on Juneteenth, we have 2 staff in the building and we are providing direct service to homeless folks. The workload gets almost unmanageable, and the staff ratio is questionable (usually we have to have 3 staff to open).

This is... Not legal, right? Again. Juneteenth is not about me. I'm not mad there isn't a white people holiday, I'm not mad about working the day if we had the staff for it. But it ends up being that the only 2 people in the entire company who are working are me and my one white coworker, even though the admin building is predominantly white folks who get the day off cause they aren't direct service employees. It's a stress every year. It's just 1 day, so not a huge deal, but I just feel like this can't be a normal or permissible thing?

If someone could help me understand this I'd appreciate it.

Eta: editing because of course there are wackos trying to make me sound racist. As I said, we are not mad that I don't have a special white person holiday. I just don't want to work in a homeless shelter practically by myself. Under any other circumstances, we would close with only 2 staff.

But if any of you who think I'm being ridiculous would like to come run a drop in shelter/food bank when you're down 3 staff, be my guest. We get 25-40 people a day. Good luck babes!

Event staff told me and wheelchair bound partner we can’t park in disabled spot because they were reserving it for a taco truck employee. Is this illegal?

Location: CA

Hi there. My boyfriend recently had four toes amputated and has various other injuries to his legs from a car crash. He is currently wheelchair bound and has a disabled placard. We went to go watch our friends at a sports tournament which is run by a national non-profit. It was hosted in a small-ish private gym.

When we arrived at the tournament a man working told us we could not use the only disabled parking spot because they were reserving it for a taco truck that was coming later. Me and my partner are new to all of this so we did not know if this was illegal or anything so we ended up parking in another lot which was a lot less accessible for him.

Now here is what is confusing me.

I went out of the building a while later and the truck was in the lot, but it wasn’t parked IN the disabled spot. It was blocking the spot and there was a car with a disabled placard parked there. I’m assuming they reserved it for one of the workers of the food truck? I’m not too sure as I didn’t see whose car it was. But since it was blocked off by the food truck I assume it belonged to someone associated with them.

This whole experience was really frustrating and I’m not sure what exactly the laws are. From what I have read, disabled spots are first come first serve. It was also the only disabled spot in the lot, which had probably 20-25 other regular parking spots (all full as well). So I don’t know how to proceed or if I should file a complaint. And if I should file a complaint, how/where would I do so?

My main questions are, is it legal for an event to reserve a public handicap spot for a disabled staff member? And is it legal for them to reserve it for a food truck?

Thank you!

Brother crashed my car and mom won’t allow him to pay me for it, is my only option to sue?
Brother crashed my car and mom won’t allow him to pay me for it, is my only option to sue?
Traffic and Parking

Location: Maryland

Hi all. First I would like to start with background on my car. It was an older car (Toyota 2010s) and I got a really good deal on it. Trying to leave out identifiable information, but let’s say that I bought it for $5K while the Kelly Blue Book values it at $8K. I used all my savings to buy it, and even ending up taking a loan (which I paid off the next month) to get it.

Because I’m a college student paying for my own car insurance, and I knew I was only gonna drive it barely 3K miles a year (mostly for appointments, groceries, and going home and back which was usually a 5-6 hour bus ride round trip) I got liability only insurance with intentions of switching it once I graduated and would be more car dependent.

It’s important to note that because I spend 90% of my time in my apartment near my college, I registered my car & insurance there.

Now to the story.

In May, I (20F) let my brother (18M) borrow my car to take to school as his old hand me down car was in the shop. He had a final and it was imperative that he was on time, and I was visiting from college since my work was virtual.

Well, while he was out (crazy part is somewhere he didn’t tell me he was going after classes) he got in a major accident. Frame + radiator damage. He rear ended someone. He called me freaking out and although all I wanted to do was cry, I swallowed it in order to calm him down enough to guide him through exchanging insurances + calling the police. He mentioned that he had $10K in his savings, and he’d be willing to cover as much as he can for the car. He was really apologetic. After everything was done, then I cried. A lot. I ended up missing work. Obviously insurance didn’t pay anything out since it was liability only.

The next day we towed the car to an auto body and got a quote that was higher than we expected. ($8K). We decided to shop around, and he said for this price we might as well buy another we saw online car that was an exact copy (years and mileage) of mine but for $8K. I told him that works if he’d be willing, or he could just give me that $8K and I can put it towards another car. He said he didn’t mind doing that.

Important to note that I absolutely loved this car. I wanted to drive it until I was married and beyond, then pass it down to my children like my uncle did his. I ended up not even having the car for a year before this accident.

Fast forward to my mom finding out, and she told my brother not to pay me that much. My brother, being young, listened. He also transferred all his money to her (because she was supposed to send it to me originally.)

She said he could only pay me $6K, since I bought the car for $5K and did a bunch of upgrades to it. I mentioned that $1K doesn’t even cover all the upgrades, and showed her an itemized list of everything I added. She said the max she’ll allow him to give me is $6K and that I would also need to sign over the title. I told her I still want to keep this car, and that I love it. She said she won’t allow my brother to send over a single cent until I sign over the title. No matter how much bargaining I do, this is her only stance. Even though I told her I don’t want to sell the car, I just want it fixed, or money that could be used to fix it, and I’ll slowly fix it myself.

I even offered he could just pay for the repairs for a cheaper shop we found, and I keep the car, but the only shop she was willing to consider was a really cheap shop we got her car fixed at, which did so bad that she still says her car “died at the shop.” It still drives, but nowhere near as good.

She wasn’t even budging at $6K with me keeping the title. Thats not even on the low end of the Kelly Blue Book value.

I added the median range of the kelly blue book value, as well as the prices for everything I did to the car up together, and it was closer to $9.5K, pushing $9.7K. I said he could have the car if he paid me that full amount, and was declined.

My mom said I could either sign the title over for $6K, go to the horrible shop, deal with not having a car, or she’ll see me in court. Is this seriously the only option?

ETA: My insurance also went up $300/6months because I lost my “good driver” discount + they forcefully added him to my insurance, even though we don’t live together and he’s never lived at my apartment. I signed a contract that states he wouldn’t be covered under my insurance, but the premiums were still up like $150 about. (I’ve never been in an accident myself.)

Edit 2: It seems the post is locked 😭 I think I’m going to show my mom this post and let her see what everyone’s saying. Will update if anything happens worth updating.

To everyone telling my brother to grow a pair: I know right.

If not, I’ll push it through my mom’s insurance (my brother is on my moms) I didn’t know you could do that, I just simply never reported my cars damages to my insurance since I knew they wouldn’t fix it anyways.

Mechanic forgot to put the drain plug back during an oil change and ruined my engine. They are denying liability.

Location: Virginia, US.

I took my car to a service center for a routine oil change yesterday. Ten miles down the highway, my oil light flashed and the engine seized.

I had it towed to an independant shop. They confirmed the engine is completely ruined because there was no oil in it, and the drain plug was missing entirly.

The first shop refuses to cover the repairs, claiming the plug must have fallen out due to road debris and it is not their fault. Do I sue them in small cl aims court, or should I go through my insurance first?

GF got "served" last night
GF got "served" last night
Other Civil Matters

I answered the door last night, and it was a cop-looked to be about 80, and he asked to speak to my girlfriend. He gave her a piece of paper, which was not in an envelope, and dated 2/9/2016. It was a summons. She is apparently being sued over a car she had previously and surrendered back to the company because the monthly payments were too high. The paper says she has 20 days to respond, i assume from date of service, but the old man did not sign or date anything- he claimed he had not read it. This is the first she, or I, have heard of this matter, and no attempts were made to contact her before last night, over four months after the date the summons was issued. So, what do we do here? What response is required? Why was the summons not dated or kept in an envelope? I will be glad to answer any further questions on her behalf, as well. Location: Oklahoma, USA.

Can't report the credit cards my parents opened in my name as fraud?

Location: Utah

Parents opened up a bunch of credit cards in my name when I turned 18 without my consent. I called the credit card company and they told me since I know them and they added themselves as an authorized user they don't consider it fraud. How is this not fraud? They used my name and social and used it to open a credit card without my consent on knowledge.

FBI wants to meet with me
FBI wants to meet with me

Update; met with them today. There was a special victims support person there and everything. Turns out I look so youthful they thought a picture of me that was stolen from OF and was floating around (from when I was 20-21) was me as a child. I confirmed to them the photo was me of-age and I was good to go! Haha I’m so glad it was something simple. I was hoping they caught the stalker so that’s a shame but at least it was nothing big.

Location: Washington state. I got an email from the FBI wanting to meet with me. At first I thought it may be a scam but I called the local fbi building and they confirmed it was an actual agent.

She said in her initial email
“Good morning Katie, I'm contacting you in hopes that I will be able to speak with you. I had a few questions for you about some information you may have.

I shouldn't take too much of your time but please let me know if there is a good time to meet with you or a better method to contact you.”

I cut a few things out but that’s the majority of it. She went to my old address and got my email from my old landlord, tried my phone # but I no longer carry a phone line so she emailed.

I asked what it was about, if it was something I did or about something else but she stated “by no means are you in trouble” (which we all know the fbi can lie to you so who knows if that’s true) and said it’s “sensitive in nature” so it’s best to meet in person. She wants to meet 6 days from now.

I’m freaking out a bit, I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong. I know I have some debts and a few things in collections but I can’t imagine what could bring the fbi to me! I don’t go out much, I don’t even have a license anymore, I can’t imagine I would have been a witness to anything considering how little I’m going out in public lol. I’ve always said I’d never voluntarily go speak with police or anything of the sort, but I think I’ll keep freaking out if I don’t go figure out what it’s about. Maybe it’s something small and dumb? About someone else? I don’t know. My plan is to not answer anything unless it’s about something not related directly to me? If it’s about me or my family I’d get a lawyer of course and not answer anything.

The only thing I can think it *could* be about is I used to have a stalker, he would send me photos and drawings of my house, photos of him with bullets and a gun, threaten me, etc. I reported it years ago but haven’t heard from him since. He’s harassed many girls online. Maybe he hurt someone and they are questioning me too? No clue. Should I go meet with her? Should I not say anything when I get there? Will they tell me what it’s about when I get there? Where do I meet with her, in public? (Surely not my home!) will they let my husband come sit with me? I’m autistic (level 1, most people wouldn’t even realize) but I always have my husband or a support person with me in public.

Edit: I should include, I do solo adult content for a living. For the last 6 years or so. Because she said ‘sensitive nature’ maybe it’s related to that? I do it officially through OF and they have VERY strict rules, and I do very realistic, non fetish, normal stuff so I can’t see how I’d get in trouble for anything there. It’s all very vanilla. I do have many accounts who have stolen my photos and some videos so those are online elsewhere, maybe it could be something from that? I have no clue. I really wish she would have given me an indicator of what this could be about…

Legal advice for pred case

Topic: CP, child mlesttion, criminal confinement

I pressed charged against a person who was my monster, come to find out there was many others with physical evidence included in prosecution. I was told the FBI is in joint prosecution with the state as they have taken over because of the amount of CP and degree of his acts, with this said he has been in jail for over a year now. In Indiana a defendant can keep pushing for continuances as long as the judge allows it, being a small county they have for 4 jury trial dates now. I have been sent around and around via court calls to speaking with someone about contesting his continuances as it does hurt his victims as we continuously call off work, relive what we know we will hear in court just to get a call on the way that his slimey lawyer (no offense to the general grouping, this guy has just been a slimey guy from the beginning when even CPS says they don't know how a judge has allowed things to happen) has filed a continuance the Friday or day before and it was awarded within hrs of court hearing. I've finally gotten ahold of someone of somewhat help but I'm wondering if I can speak with the judge directly in the sense of a victim impact statement to these continuances and forcing this man to face the choir for his monstrosities. The court house basically told me that I can't but I feel like that's B's so is there anything I can do to push it into action as it's been well over a year with no movement?

Child support
Child support

Location: Ohio

So here’s a backstory 13 years ago, my ex got pregnant. We both lived in Ohio moved to Texas when she had him I signed the birth certificate thinking he was mine a year later she told me he wasn’t and since I am from Ohio, I didn’t really have anywhere to go or a reason to be around since he wasn’t mine. Now 12 years later, she files for child support and retro pay and my lawyer tells me since I signed the birth certificate even if he wasn’t mine a DNA test wouldn’t matter. My question is can she actually go back 12 years for a retro pay after all this time? Is there anything I could fight like why would she wait so long and is there any cap on retro pay? I now have a wife and three kids with a house. She still lives in an apartment and has three baby daddies. It just seems like a payday for her money grab

What can I do if someone has CP of myself I never sent them?
What can I do if someone has CP of myself I never sent them?

Sorry guys, this is gonna be a long one. Location: Tennessee. TLDR; My exs brother downloaded CP of me (& many others) from when I was a minor off of my exes phone when we were both minors (and some while brother was an adult) and still has it as an adult.

Okay… this is gonna be sooo long so apologies ahead of time. This involves a lot of people but the main characters are myself, my ex we will call A, my exes brother we will call B, and my exes cousin whom is also my ex we will call C.

A smidge of backstory, A & B are my mothers best friends sons. We kinda grew up together, kinda not. Circa December 2016, I started dating A when I was 13 and he was 15. We were together until March I think? So like only 3 months ish. We did exchange is nudes as most modern day teens unfortunately do. Trust, I know better and do better now. What I didn’t know was that his TWIN brother B, would hack into his phone and download my nudes. Not just mine, but every single persons that A ever dated while they lived together. This all came to light recently and I will explain that part closer to the end.

Anyways, moving forward before I knew that B did this stuff, around 2018 I got with their cousin C. I was with him for a few months and then we took a break. Around when we took a break in 2019, B started staying with us for awhile to get away from his mom. Well we had a computer that everyone would log in to Facebook on. Myself, my brother, my brothers gf, B, C, etc. I was snooping on B’s phone one day while he was asleep (I genuinely couldn’t tell you why, I was 15 and nosey) and in his photo album, I found SO MANY NUDES. Nudes of myself I had sent to A, nudes of myself I kept on my personal phone, nudes of my brothers gf, nudes of every single girl I could recognize that had been with A. I deleted that shit quick and went off on him for it. I thought that would be the end. I got back with C, B moved out a couple of weeks later and so on. Myself and C broke up towards the end of 2020 and both moved on. A & B became adults at the end of 2019. I became an adult at the end of 2021.

Now, or well I guess a few months ago (2026), me and my husband were visiting C and his wife. His wife says she has something to tell me and she can’t keep it to herself. She is close friends with B’s girlfriend. Turns out B’s girlfriend found a Google document with all of these nudes plus more. B had lived with his brother A for a brief bit in 2022 and with his cousin C in 2021. Turns out both times he got on their phones and download all the nudes they had. The problem is, most if not all of these nudes were taken when everyone was minors. A & his fiancé at the time of download were adults but he had downloaded the nudes and videos they took while minors. He downloaded nudes and videos of myself and C which were taken while we were minors (and at the time of download, I was still a minor). So he was an adult actively downloading CP, and actively looking at other CP he illegally obtained when he was a minor. B’s girlfriend reportedly deleted the file.

A, his fiancé, and myself reported this to the TBI and to the police department of where B lives. The officer basically said that since none of us recently saw this file, that unless B’s girlfriend or himself report it that there’s nothing that can be done. He said the hacking and downloading is considered identity theft but the statute of limitations for that is 4 years in Tennessee so it’s past the time that they can do anything for that. He did say that since technically what he downloaded from C’s phone in 2021 while being an adult and myself being a minor, there might be a case but since no one has seen it themselves he doesn’t think the DA will investigate.

Is there literally anything more I can do? It makes me sick to my stomach that a 24 year old grown man is jacking off to photos and videos of myself between the ages of 13-16 years old. & even photos and videos of his TWIN BROTHER?!? That’s fucking sick. And his girlfriend protecting him by deleting the file??? Like they have an INFANT together and she’s STILL WITH HIM.

edit: thank you guys for calming my nerves as i got into a google search of anxiety, ill be meeting my family this weekend and im going to tell them that im not signing anything & im going to just play it by ear on visiting and that im not going to have a set schedule/its up to my child if she wants to visit etc. and im definitely going looooooow contact with them as this has added an extra layer of stress that i didnt need.

Hello, I’m planning on moving out of state to TN, my mom/sister are threatening to sue me for grandparents rights, I did verbally tell them that I was planning on coming back to WI for the holidays that we do celebrate together and possibly having her stay for the summer with them, they are now wanting it to be notarized. My issue is I know my child is not going to want to spend the whole summer up here.
my child is 12 and we haven’t lived with my mom for years.
I’m not planning on not letting her see them etc as I want her to have that relationship with them/ be with them.

do they have any rights or is it in my best interests to sign the document?
I tried googling but it just got super confusing and I’m just nervous.

Dry cleaner ruined a $1,200 coat and says their liability is capped at $50

Location: Michigan

I took my wool desginer coat to a local dry cleaner last month. When I picked it up, it was completely shrunked and unwearable.

The owner admitted they made a mistake but refuses to pay more than $50. He points to a tiny "liability limit" clause printed on the back of my drop-off ticket.

I never signed anything. Can I sue in small claims for the full value?

Location: NYC

Looking for some advice here. I got a traffic ticket for a stop sign violation about a month ago. I didn't want to get any points on my license so I called a lawyer to help me. The fee was $500 and he said he will take care of it.

2 weeks pass and I haven't heard any updates from the lawyer, I called him up and his assistance told me that it will be taken care of.

Come now, I just got a notification that my license is suspended and I have to pay a fee to get it back. The lawyer was no help and basically scammed me out of $500. Is there a way for me to get back my money from the lawyer?

Leant money to a coworker, now he's fired and ghosting me
Leant money to a coworker, now he's fired and ghosting me

Title, basically. I live in florida, don't wanna get into the why but I leant him 1500 with no set "pay me back" date. I know I shouldn't have but we're past that. It's been 3 months almost to the day, we did it over venmo so I have proof that it happened. Anyway he got fired from the job earlier this week and while I get that he needs cash now more than ever it's been 3 months and I was honest to God gonna remind him about it the day he was fired.

Anyway, is there any shot I can see that money again? I'm not dying here but 1500 would certainly help right about now.

Possible tax fraud
Possible tax fraud
Tax Law

Location: California. I work for my parent’s construction company. I work both on the field and in the office. Last night I was inputting paperwork and receipts. I noticed that my stepdad has been putting adding 25% to every purchase he makes that gets billed to the customer. So he is charging the customer for the materials, getting paid from the customer but then also writing off the materials for the job. Any subcontractor we use, he adds an additional 25% fee that the customer has to pay for. Any meal that they go out to (even if it’s not work related) turns into a “company meal”. Also paying for gas, adding it to the customers invoice and writing it off because it’s work related.

I’m just wondering if it’s illegal? What would it be considered if it is illegal? And if I could get in trouble for inputting the information for tax submissions?

I’m not a professional bookkeeper. Just the only one in the family that’s good with computer work.

Thanks in advance!

94 year old grandpa suddenly married his caretaker of the last 11 months. What are some of the first things we should do?

Location: Florida, United States

Posting for my husband. His grandpa is 94 and lives in Florida. Grandpa has 3 children, all over the age of 60, and 3 grandchildren all over the age of 30. Grandpa owns his house and has some assets. I'm 99% sure he has a will.

Grandpa's been unmarried for at least 20 years and moved to Florida many years ago. None of his children or grandchildren live anywhere near Florida, but all his children visit once or twice a year.

My husband's uncle hired a service provider from an agency about a year ago. This provider suddenly quit her job and married grandpa last week. Nobody saw it coming. The new wife has changed all the locks on the house and is refusing to let grandpa answer phone calls from his relatives. The new wife was married once and her previous husband died (we have no further info on that yet).

Me and my husband have watched a lot of true crime shows and we've seen this story before.

What things should we be doing right now, both in terms of legal steps and just good things in general to be doing?

Thanks for any advice.

Credit Debt Bankruptcy

I’ve just been sued by Chase Bank for $10k in credit card debt. I am located in the Bay Area in California. I stopped paying the credit card off when I became disabled a little over a year ago, and I haven’t been able to work since the end of 2023 due to my disability. I have filed for disability and was denied the first time, I’m currently waiting for my appeal to process but it will probably be denied again because I am young and don’t have a visible impairment.

How would I go about settling with them? I have several thousand dollars in my checking account, but not enough to pay for the full $10k. I’m not sure how to respond to the lawsuit, there wasn’t a form or anything given to me, just the papers stating I’m being sued and a copy of the credit card agreement I signed when I first got the credit card in 2020.

Location: Bay Area, California

EDIT: I have contacted the plaintiff attorney and they offered a lump sum payment of $8500 or a payment plan for the full amount, neither of which I can afford. What should I do regarding this?

[WA] Former real estate agent (and family friend) is demanding a $3,000 "withdrawal fee" via Zelle a year after we took our house off the market. Do I owe her?
Real Estate law

Location: WA

Last year, my wife and I listed our home in Washington state for about $1.15M. We used an agent who is also a close family friend. We signed a standard NWMLS Form 1A Exclusive Sale and Listing Agreement.

A month into the listing (July 2025), she brought us a lowball offer of $980k, which we rejected. We ultimately decided to just take the house off the market entirely. The listing agreement had a stated expiration date of September 4, 2025. At the time we canceled, she never invoiced us for anything.

Fast forward to today, a year later. We are getting ready to sell the house again, but because of family dynamics, we decided to use a different agent. Our former agent found out and sent us a WhatsApp message. She is deeply upset that we aren't using her and is now demanding that we pay her for the time and money she spent last year.
Specifically, she asked me to Zelle her $3,000 to her personal account. She claims that "it's usually 1% when you receive an offer and turn it down and take the listing off," but she is offering to "only" charge us $3,000.
I read our old contract front to back. There is absolutely no mention of a 1% "withdrawal fee" or a penalty for rejecting an offer. There is only a standard clause stating that if a seller cancels without legal cause, they "may be liable for damages incurred by Firm as a result of such cancellation".

My questions are:

  1. Since the contract is with the Brokerage Firm, isn't it illegal/improper for her to demand a flat fee sent to her personal Zelle account?

  2. Since she never invoiced us for actual out-of-pocket damages (like photography) through her brokerage when we canceled last year, does she have any legal standing to demand this now just because her feelings are hurt?

  3. Can I safely tell her no, or ignore her, without worrying about her putting a lien on my house or successfully suing me?

1 Year+ Harassment by proxy - Help!
1 Year+ Harassment by proxy - Help!

Hello,

I will try my best to keep this within community rules.

Location: California (United States)

I've been dealing with my fiance's ex stalking and harassing me for over a year and I just want it to go away so I can move on with my life already.

Anyone involved has told me "Just block her and stay off social media" which trust me, was step 1 I did 2 years ago.

Her favorite thing to do is go online and fill out random request forms with my contact information, so I've been getting constant phone calls, texts, and emails from several companies over the last year. This girl is relentless. Both my parents passed away this year, and now she has been filling the forms out with my information, but using my deceased parent's names. This also includes mail fraud, as I've now been receiving packages and mail to my home with my parents names. Oddly, what stands out to me is that she spells my mom's name incorrectly, so it pisses me off on a different level when I receive anything with my mom's "name" on it.

I don't have much specific evidence directly connecting her to this, but it is 1000% her, because why else would credit card applications suddenly be coming to my address with her name on them? I'm certain her algorhythm thinks she lives here now.

One piece of evidence I do have- I received a letter that she attempted to set up USPS Informed Delivery for my address. It was addressed to her initials, not her full name. There is an email address in the letter, but unfortunately it is partially redacted. I contacted local law enforcement, which told me there was nothing they could do but suggested I contact my local post office/post master, which I've done but haven't received a response yet. I don't think there's much I could do with this- but I was able to have Amazon confirm she was the sender of a random package I received last year.

My fiance changed his number, and we moved, and she still found us even with trying to keep our circle of people aware very small. I've also submitted a formal complaint for cyber harassment through the FBI. Lastly, my fiance found a charge of $8,000 for gas cards on a credit card. Obviously he started an investigation/charge back and was refunded and was told the location it was narrowed down to, but that was it. He did provide her information as a person of interest, and suddenly his side of the harassment stopped, but his ex has still been relentlessly harassing me.

My question is- do I have any legal footing to stop this? I found some penal codes that indicate this type of harassment is illegal, but I haven't been successful finding an avenue to help this stop otherwise.
