Sankakucomplex is total garbage but it has artworks and artist uploads going back to the late 2000s so it's worth atleast trying to get use out of it. The biggest issue is that you can't search for 3 explicit tags at once so if you're trying to find an image using tags you just have to get a little creative with what tags you use.
Sankaku black is probably the most extensive for looking up images, Hitomi.la is best for doujins, and Ryu games is best for games.
There are other sites they have had serious problems with people mass reporting so you need to be a contributor that either helps with the site code or actively posts and tags images before the mods let you see all tags.
Make sure to use a VPN and use advanced search, the tags for languages are a little useless and don't work but use control-F to find any tags you want other than the language ones and then search "[ENG]" because all games in English or translated to English will have that in the title.

Omg I used to use sankakucomplex years ago. I tried using it a little bit ago and the popups are worse than I remember.

Gelbooru for fanarts, Nhentai for doujins

Gelbooru has always been enough for me. I browse there, if I find an artist I really like I go and leave a follow on their pixiv/twitter, etc

Exhentai is pretty good, the tagging isn't quite as detailed as gelbooru or sankaku, but it's got tons of content going back 20 years or so.
