Naked Banana is an image that gained notoriety on imageboards, mostly being used as an out of context image on various boards on 4chan.
Origin
On April 27th, 2010, the "Naked Banana" Facebook page was launched, featuring an illustration of an anthropomorphized banana holding its peel to the side as if it were clothing.
Spread
The image, a stock photo of a "naked" banana holding a peel, began trending due to a Facebook post in which a group of older internet users find the image to be far funnier than most would, and have a confusing conversation about it; the original source and explanation can be seen below.
One anonymous user's interpretation of this awkwardly worded conversation is as follows:
here's how i interpret this: Bill Hitchert, Jon Callanan and Lori Petrosino were facebook friends (prolly IRL friends as well). One day Bill Hitchert posted the Banana image. Maybe he got some response, maybe not. Maybe people commented on the image and he was really proud of his finding. Maybe no one commented and he let it go. I think he got some feedback and he was proud of himself, in a pleb way. Then, one day, perhaps not too long after, Jon Callanan posts the same banana image. I don't know if it was intentional or not. Perhaps he had a beef with Bill Hitchert, perhaps he was just trolling Bill, perhaps he was just as a moron as Bill (they are friends, after all). Bill, upon seeing that, not sure what Jon was up to, tries to fake a laugh and asks where did Jon find it (hey Jon "ha-ha", where did you find this ?). Jon, who prolly knew what he was doing, says, oh, just somewhere. Then adds sarcastically. Nice of you to join us. It's possible that Bill was ignoring Jon, and that Jon did it to bait Bill. Bill, then, passively-agressively says the famous "i really (3x) like this image", as if saying (yeah, I, it was me, before, who posted that image, scumbag) Jon, then replies with his famous: save it, it's yours, which, of course, means "yes, I know you posted, i stoled, suck my dick". Then Lori, who was just passing by, says: "wow, this is funny" Bill, then being the one who posted first, of course, says "thank you, you should thank me, I was the one who introduce the image to this faggot" And that was the story
Naked Banana, or variations of the image are typically posted dozens of times in "You Laugh, You Lose" threads, to the fury of many users who wish to see different content. When shared on 4chan,[1] users typically reply with "I really, really, really like this image" or other quotes from the bizarre conversation. One notable negative reaction to come from other posters is a Copypasta in which the poster goes on about how the person who posted the Naked Banana is an overweight, shut-in manchild living with his mother whose entire existence revolves around posting the Naked Banana picture or recreating the original Facebook conversation. knowyourmeme.com has completely lost all credibility for me. i was there these stupidba nana images began on 4chan & this fake origin story is bs. this is a forced meme. when i say forced, i dont wanna get into the argument that all memes are forced. i mean, this was forced to become a meme. true memes are forced as jokes thats why they become memes.
from what i experienced the first night & the following days of a shit-posting organization posting these dumb bananas & trying to make me & others do the same thing it seems they have bamboozled knowyourmeme.com too. as far as the origin with that stupid facebook convo….dont be stupid. ask yourself, would 3 or 4 asshats in a short convo on fb have enough people looking at said convo to make something so hilarious? first you would have hundreds of comments on fb. then maybe it would leak out into the outside world to other square media sites (twitard/tumblr/etc) then if it didnt expire there, then maybe would make it to chan.
this didnt happen & whatever marketing organization is know linking to this site to show their possibly clients that they are indeed able to start a meme. barf
