Winter Olympics 2026: Matt Weston wins skeleton gold to get Team GB off the medal mark
The reigning world champion added the Olympic title to his collection on Friday (13 February), with Germany’s Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer securing silver and bronze, respectively.
It's taken seven days but on Friday (13 February) Matt Weston won a sensational men's skeleton Olympic gold to get Team GB off the mark at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
Dominating all four runs with a quartet of track records, the two-time world champion secured a first Olympic medal in a time of 3:43.44.
The Beijing 2022 silver medallist Axel Jungk and defending champion Christopher Grotheer finished in silver and bronze medal positions, respectively, on 3:44.21 and 3:44.40, to round out the podium.
"It's an actual dream," said a tearful Weston afterwards. "I literally cannot put into words what this means. It means obviously a hell of a lot for me but (also) everyone who had to sacrifice for me to be here, my fiancé, everyone like that.
“I’ve missed funerals, birthdays, everything to be here for this moment. Hopefully I did everyone at home proud.”

Matt Weston wins Olympic gold medal at second Olympic Games
Weston, who became the first British man to win an individual gold medal since figure skater Robin Cousins at Lake Placid 1980, led the men's skeleton from run one on Thursday, with his times just getting quicker.
The first track record was 56.21 and by the fourth and final run on Friday, he had lowered that mark to 55.61, a huge 0.88 seconds quicker after the four combined times of Jungk.
The result rounds out quite the season for the Brit who is now an Olympic champion, reigning world and European champion, as well as overall World Cup winner for a third consecutive time.
He is also a three-time World Championship silver medallist in the mixed team event, which bodes well for Team GB in that event on Sunday (15 February).
At 34, Jungk is also the oldest medallist in this event since Turin 2006. Jungk beat compatriot Christopher Grotheer by 0.19 to win silver, with the latter having had quite the recovery after missing half of summer training with a quad tear.
