Just to be clear to anybody, especially in the USA because I know that Catholicism isn’t as common there, this is not a cool rebellion against authority. While some traditionalist Catholics are purely interested in ecumenical things like the Latin mass, in the USA a significant portion of the movement for traditionalism is made up of violent antisemites. while i understand that this is meant to be a joke about hellish capitalism, again, we cannot erase an important dimension to his work: franz kafka was a jew. he and his families were jews during a time period where traditional, religiously-based jew hatred was being replaced with a new pseudoscientific belief that jews were to be hated and oppressed because they were a subhuman race. this transition to race-based hatred of jews meant that even assimilated jews- who considered themselves citizens of states before they were ever jews- were now being irrationally targeted and hunted.
the term “anti-Semitism” was created specifically to name this new racial hatred of Jews. it was coined in 1879- 4 years before Kafka was born.
in “the metamorphosis”, Gregor Samsa wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a “monstrous vermin”. in kafka’s real world, jews woke up one morning, in their country that they were told was now enlightened and accepting of all people, and found out that they were now considered “monstrous vermin”. and then 6 million jews of his generation were exterminated.
i am giving the simplest analysis to this right now, but we need to understand that you cannot just blanketly universalize his work. you cannot remove the context of kafka’s jewishness or that he lived at a time when antisemitism became fervently racial. yes, discuss how his work comments on capitalism, society, etc. but to only use ONLY these lenses and to ONLY universalize his work is dishonest, whitewashes his work and life, and further exhibits how little non-jews know or care about the jewish history and how antisemitism has impacted jews for over 2000 years.

Literally the only reason Franz Kafka existed was because his Jewish ancestor was allowed to have a family.
In short, between 1745 and 1859 in the Kingdom of Bohemia (what is now the Czech Republic), there was a law that limited the number of Jewish families. A census taken in 1787 showed that there were 8,541 Jewish families in Bohemia; preferring round numbers, the government increased the limit to 8,600. And for close to a hundred years, that was the limit. If a Jewish man wanted to get married and get a marriage license, he had to emigrate from the country. Unlearning is a work in progress, but basically finding out the information I was given wasn’t true. I was taught the “a land without a people for a people without a land” - found out Palestinians, you know, lived here, actually. Was taught all the violence we committed was in self defense - found out we destroyed whole villages to take over the land. Was taught our military is very ethical and never violent without necessity - saw what we do to Palestinians even today (and by “today” I mean before the current escalation in Gaza, I have no idea how anyone can ignore this one now). Was taught we “made the desert bloom” - learned some about native and non-native plants, and about the colonialist nature of trying to transform a whole ecosystem to suit us instead of living with the land as it is. From “Israel vs the Palestinian territories” to learning that even the lands taken over in 48… were taken from them. From “this is our land because this is where we come from” to learning that we aren’t the only people that originated in this land and we can’t just override the claim of the people who lived here for generations.
None of this, like, inherently means you’ll let go of zionism. I know zionists who would agree with me about many of these points. But, I suppose, for me it’s a broader anti-colonialism and anti-isolationism thing, and… anti-exceptinalism?
Like, I had to unlearn the idea that antisemitism is a unique and singular kind of oppression that no oppressed group can ever relate to or have solidarity with. The idea that we’re alone, we’ll always be alone, we’re destined to be hated and murdered in ongoing and repeated extermination attempts unless we segregate ourselves in our own state with our own military where we can double down on “kill or be killed” over and over. And because we’re the only ones who are this completely rejected by the rest of humanity, anything we do to achieve that goal of safety is justified regardless of who we hurt. Or even that our unique state as victims means we can’t actually cause harm in the ways that we were hurt.
Antisemitism is unique in the same way that anti-Blackness is unique and ableism is unique, they all have their own elements. That doesn’t mean we can’t fight together and form coalitions with other marginalized groups. Romani people are another example of how our experiences are both unique and not. They don’t face antisemitism, but they were still part of The Final Solution. We’re not The Ultimate Victims, we’re one group among many.
All of this together, for me, meant going from “we’re the only nation not allowed to have our own country, self determination,” to understanding that the issue isn’t the question of the right to self determination, it’s the fact that we decided to exercise it at the expense of other people. Pretty sure Romani people would face the same reactions if they decided to displace another nation for the sake of their own self determination. This isn’t a game of musical chairs, we can’t just go “your turn in exile, get out” and expect that to be okay.
Some stateless nations live in a specific location under another country, and they can declare independence in that place without causing harm. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t have that. But Palestinians shouldn’t pay the price.
And Jewish people should be safe everywhere, not just in the small patch of land where we’re the oppressor.
Final thing is, had to read a bit about what Palestinians think of all of this. Which is complicated, no group is a monolith, and I don’t think I’m qualified to break that down. But after unpacking all the “about us” things, I had to look at their goals from liberation, and now I try to do my best to stay informed and support those goals.

The way I was raised, there are two kinds of people: Jews and gentiles. All oppression of gentiles towards other gentiles is just… not the same? I don’t even know how to explain in what way. Like, it’s not that I was told it’s not as serious. I knew. But it was less… like, the roots weren’t as deep. And it wasn’t, like, fate. Inevitable. In my mind, they’ll get the racism thing worked out eventually, but us? They’ll always hate us. All of them, oppressed and oppressors, they’ll always want us gone. There was never going to be a way out. If we’re too visibly different, we’re Other, if we’re too similar, we’re infiltrators. I’d be lucky if I find a few gentiles that don’t hate me and actually respect my existence as a Jewish person. And even then, watch out, you never know what they think in secret, behind your back, and how quickly they might turn on you.

Basically, the entire premise of this feud is flawed. Anish Kapoor did not buy a color he bought a product. It was the company that made that products choice to sell it to him.
Nothing was stopping other people from making their own black paint. To me Stewart Semples reaction was an obvious bid for attention, which while understandable when success is measured in popularity, isn’t the hero move this post portrays it as. Especially in light of Semple continuing to profit and gain recognition off of this feud. His continued put downs of another artist in order to raise himself up are distasteful.
The hatred of Kapoor is also way overblown. I admit to disliking him somewhat by default based on the fact that he’s rich but I don’t think the fact that he wants his art to be called the called the name he gave it (cloudgate vs the bean) is unreasonable just silly. And while its true he did copyright its image the only instance I see of him going after anyone regarding it is when he sued the NRA (good for him) and won. Im aware he doesn’t really need me defending him and that is not my intent, I just cringe to see misinformation being spread for some sort of weird petty schadenfreude. Theres a lot of accusations of him being elitist or hating poor people in this post and maybe thats true (I dont know him, and to be honest I never heard of him before this post made him public enemy number 1) but I haven’t seen it come up elsewhere just from tumblr.

There are not many of us in the world and interesting works of modern public art around the world, especially cloud gate but also his other mirror installations, that are freely available to the public. Should be something that remind us of the survival and success of members of our community, but instead have become a focal point of antisemitic rhetoric spread across wonder bread levels of colonial racism, that people are failing to critically analyse because they’re caught up in the communal joke.
He is not the only wealthy pompous artist, but he is likely the only one who’s name you know, alongside another wealthy pompous artist Stuart Semple who has managed to mythologise his character, and build his brand through the use of age old antisemitic and anti-indian rhetoric.

Nobody is saying that Stuart Semple is evil and he’s never had well intentioned projects, he can be an excellent pigment manufacturer, and an exploiter of his employees labour, the creator of thoughtful and hard hitting activist art pieces like his 2020 Gay Blood inks, and dive head first into the NFT grift, not consider himself racist or antisemitic, but be using racist and antisemitic rhetoric.
People are typically more complicated than simply good or bad, and I want people to recognise that he is disingenuously manipulating the facts, and his behaviour does not make him a hero of any kind. A feud requires tit for tat, when it’s one sided we call it obsession or harassment.
People in the comments who know very little about Anish Kapoor referring to him as a “conservative” and that people like Semple are an example of how to deal with “people like them” is extremely troubling. Kapoor is a lifelong campaigner for public education, he is a fierce critic of conservative politics both in Britain and in India. He is wealthy, but his wealth is not the product of failure to pay employees their contract wages unlike Semple.
I also want to draw attention to the fact that Kapoor’s installations are regularly the target of antisemitic graffiti.

But yeah, coming back to the original point, the other kids, especially Augustus Gloop and Veruca Salt, cheated the system by claiming a ridiculous amount of chocolate bars. News reports mention people hoarding Wonka chocolate bars in hopes of finding the Golden Ticket. Mr Salt even admits that he refitted his staff at a nut-shelling factory for opening chocolate bars, without a doubt losing a huge amount of capital in lost profits and mass bulk-buying of chocolate, just to win. The working-class lady who actually found that ticket didn’t benefit from that luck or labour - she was immediately made to hand it over to her boss for his spoiled daughter, who holds it as ‘his’ victory and good luck.
Charlie didn’t even find the ticket in his first bar, or his second. His first bar, his birthday present, was a dud, and he even failed to enjoy it like normal because he dared to hope, just for a moment, that he might actually be lucky enough to get the one. Later, he is lucky enough to find a dropped 50p piece in the street, and goes to buy a chocolate bar for himself. Finally holding a treat that is all his, he wolfs the thing down, stopping only long enough to realises that he didn’t get lucky and win a Golden Ticket. It’s only on the third bar that he gets it, and, smelling blood in the water, the shopkeeper tells him to immediately go home and not tell a soul that he has it, knowing what people might do to this small starving boy if they find out what he has.
And Wonka knows! He knows he done goofed! He realises almost immediately that the people who have been attracted to his lottery, who have stacked the decks in their favour, are awful, cruel, entitled people! Augustus Gloop, the glutton, doesn’t care what placed in front of him so long as it’s food - and the first obstacle? A room where everything is a kind of sweet. Violet’s gum-chewing is excessive, but the modern film adapts this into a more realistic and sinister flaw - overcompetitiveness. It’s not just that she’s been chewing the same piece of gum for months, it’s that she’s been chewing the same piece of gum, weeks after its taste is gone, whether it is socially acceptable or not, just to break a record. So when Wonka promises a new treat, a personal favourite of one of the kids, but says it’s not ready yet and you can’t have it, of course Violet seizes it, because damn the consequences, she will be the first to try it. Veruca is shown a collection of unique animals, and immediately declares that she wants one, because she’s always had the bragging rights and luxury rare items. And when Mr Wonka refuses to sell? She steals it, because dang it, she will have that golden goose/trained squirrel! Mike Teevee, in his hubris, mutilates himself almost beyond recognition because he had to challenge Mr Wonka’s outlandish claim of transmitting physical objects via television. Charlie was the perfect heir, not because he was humble and poor, but because he had the wonder and appreciation for the treats Wonka made but also the sense and caution not to risk messing with the many dangerous things in an active factory. If the lottery was more fair, maybe Charlie would have had more stiff competition, but as it stands, Charlie is almost the poster boy of ‘won by doing nothing’.

Before you guys go “Wow, this book was based as shit,” PLEASEEE watch this video breaking down the story (in increasingly deranged ways), before doing more serious analysis.
Tldr of that video: the book, unintentionally or not, reinforces the myth of meritocracy. Good People get Good Things and will become rich due to how Good they are. Bad People get Bad Things. If you are greedy and undeserving, even if you’re literally a fucking child, then you shall be given divine punishment. (Seriously, that addon being like “The children were shitty and acted dumb and hubristic and greedy and so therefore they got what was coming to them” is fucked up like holy shit dude, the video above talks about how that’s fucking gross, watch it, it’s an hour long)
The book criticizes capitalism, 100%, but at the end of the day the happy ending is just “the good poor person is lifted out of poverty and becomes rich :)” which isn’t an anticapitalist message. It’s just more capitalism- if you are a Good Poor Person than maybe YOU TOO shall become rich! And if you are a Bad Rich Person than you shall be punished! You can see how that’s not a fucking anticapitalist message, right?
Also whether or not Charlie was originally black or not (this source that actually cites things says it was)… Roald Dahl was EXTREEEEMELY bigoted. This post is already long, so I won’t go into all his bigotries, but just as example, look at the treatment of Augustus Gloop, and how his being fat is a sign of how greedy and gluttonous again.

Like, the Oompa Loompas were originally “African pygmies” which Wonka shipped to England in boxes that had holes poked in them. Later on, Dahl changed them from being enslaved black people to a fantasy race that came from some mystical land called Loompaland! A horrible place that Wonka rescued this population from, paying them in cocoa beans (after firing his whole fucking workforce).

My point is- don’t go acting like Charlie And The Chocolate factory is a leftist dream. It’s really, really, really not. Shapeland was insane from conception to reveal. The long explanation about how such a model was difficult to implement, much less repeat. The giant timecard about how this was exactly what he did. Then the reveal that ShapeLand IS real, that it’s a real park with real attendance numbers on a real date in actual history, that they could run this with ANY date - that was insane. That was iconic. No one does it like Kevin Perjuror.
The Dark Brony Double Life was insane because of the LACK of theatrics. To this day, my Discord status says “AND SO THE PONY CONSUMES ITS OWN TAIL.” because of the spiralling nature of the concept of horse famous. Jenny foreshadows the reveal ONCE, and then casually just goes “by the way, I made Friendship is Witchcraft” and it utterly recontextualizes not just that video, but the other Pony videos she’s done. She’s not just a dedicated fan vis a vis her Star Wars and Harry Potter videos, no, she was HORSE FAMOUS, to the point that she had IMPERSONATORS. You all had a pick and you were right, good on ya.
Alex Lasarenko won last time, too. Tbh, its pretty good. The whole video was leading up to the reveal of Alex writing the Disney Channel theme, but slowly, the video becomes more than a deep dive. It becomes an obituary, a tribute, a biography of a late man who soundtracked a lot of kids’ childhoods, with a single four-note melody. And Kevin decides to not let that define Alex’s life, like he feels Defunctland might one day define him. And so, throughout this mystery-biopic, he plays Alex Lasarenko’s music, and only ever tells you this once the time is right. And it flips the definition of Alex Lasarenko on its head, and THAT’S a reveal that has me on the brink of tears every time.
QAnon is a reveal, yes, and I’m glad you all recommended this one because I HADN’T seen it before. It’s a sobering reveal, however. You’re having a time, learning about the decline of flat earthers and you’re learning how antisemitism and the like fuels most modern occultism and conspiracies, and then you’re hit with how they’re all at QAnon now, and you’re explained the cult of QAnon, and this becomes historical horror. Because the history is now. And the horror is you can SEE the end result as it is. SEW isn’t a sibyl, but goddamn was that a portent. With the way y'all were batting for it, I figured it’d be higher-rated. Ah well.
Waluigi, in my opinion, was an insane reveal because it wasn’t just the reveal of the video - it was the reveal of a full SEASON. Of REAL LIFE. For those of you unaware of Polygon history (unlike me, who had an on-off crush on Pat Gill), Brian was some hairless Baltimore twink like some kind of emaciated harbor seal, and one day, he decided to grow a mustache. This was, as I’m sure you’ll imagine, unpopular with his fanbase because he was a white twink in a suit. He had to publically go, in a video that season, “You aren’t my friends and you have no say in what I do with my body”. The Gilbertheads (they dont call themselves that) were INSANE over this mustache. And then he makes a Waluigi video, who was ALSO becoming a popular meme because… I assume Reddit or 4chan was responsible somehow. And you slowly realize, as the video goes on, ESPECIALLY when the words FMV tumble out of his lips, that, oh no, he’s attempting to BE Waluigi. And then he opines about the nature of Luigi, after disparaging him the whole video. And behind him, fucking Vesti la Giubba from Pagliachi has been growing in volume. And he says “[…] I’m-a Luigi.” so despondently it alters his color scheme, culminating in him shaving off the mustache ON SCREEN. Ridi, Pagliaccio.
People have said that the Victorious series finale infuriated them, and GOOD. Throught the mini-miniseries, Quinton had been casually stating the episode number, implying a finale was going to happen, potentially even gaslighting people into thinking “wait, WAS there a finale?” and since he reviewed the Victorious episodes as they came, you were ultimately left unsure. This is Quinton Reviews, the guy who dug up the very first Garfield newspaper comics and BECAME the foremost expert on Garfield (in what I like to call his Agatha Christie moment), of course he might be thorough enough to dig up some lost media finale. He found theslap.com, for god’s sake. And then he introduces the finale. And the screen goes black. It’s black for a little too long. And the lights come up. And he reveals his trick. Notably, he had never actually SAID what was in the finale, just alluded it happened, and subtly building up to it. And it never existed. And he WANTS you to feel enraged. Because that was the attitude at the time.
Tommy Talarico, I’ll admit, wasn’t so much of a reveal as it was a deranged second video. Of course, that’s if Tommy Talarico was the reveal in and of itself. A few eagle-eyed pollers may have noticed that I never specified WHAT aspect of Tommy boy was the reveal, and that’s because Tommy Talarico is a rabbit hole that would make Frederik Knudson squirt across the room (go follow him on Twitch, he’s an owl-themed VTuber now (Fred, not Tom)). He was never on Cribs. He bought his world records. He lies constantly for his own ego. He’s a throwaway line on the first half of the video, and then HBG turns off the greenscreen and begins a long exposé on the son of a bitch. And every single line there is another bullet to the chest. It’s its own brand of unhinged, and I respect everyone who got it to second place.
The Forgiveness of Jon (u/Rojom, 2020, Pencil on paper) wasn’t really a reveal, so much as a notable piece of r/imsorryjon lore. In the same manner as Sonic, this isn’t so much a reveal as it is the natural conclusion of the way the video was heading. One might CONSIDER it a reveal, as many will point out it’s a direct contrast to the way Jon was depicted in all other works, up to and including the ending of the Sex Survey Results, but its a reveal in the way a final magnum opus from a long-dead painter is a reveal. However, perhaps that’s all it has to be. Still a little ill-fitting for the poll, tho.

Tired of the antisemitic caricatures in Minecraft?
It’s well known the villagers, illagers, and witches in Minecraft are stuck with an incredibly antisemitic design that despite hope, will probably never be changed. I’ve looked for a resource pack that only changed those elements (keeping the base game look), and was non-optifine friendly, but found none, so I made my own.
(Version 1.19 but should work for all versions that include the redesigned villagers) It’s far from a perfect solution, but it satisfies my main personal annoyances (I am Jewish myself), and I’m certainly open to any improvements that can be made.
Unfortunately, there’s many things I wish I could change but am unsure how (such as re-naming the golems to constructs, or changing how the Ominous Banner looks), but my knowledge only goes so far, and I’m pretty clueless when it comes to these things. So for now it’s only visual elements that are changed. If I figure out how to do these things in the future I will certainly update it.

And never forget that one of the reasons so many Jewish-Americans contributed to comics is because of the antisemitism in much of the creative sector in 20th century America. Many of these highly skilled and creative people ended up in comics because they couldn’t find work in more prestigious and lucrative fields.
also the same reason so many of them worked in the motion picture industry when it first began; working in film wasnt a respected line of work, so it kinda became a jewish culture, and when film unexpectedly caught on, upper-middle class white christians were quick to erase the jewish influence that the film industry had. also similar to the reason why so many jews in the past millennium worked in finance- in the 1100s it was considered sinful in the christian church to handle large amounts of money, so banking in western Europe was kind of the only profession in which Jews were guaranteed a secure income. because banking was a Jewish thing because it was sinful, when it became a respected profession, the upper-middle class and elites were quick to smear the Jewish involvement in banking as an evil conspiracy to control the world

gonna add real quick that two Jewish men actually created Batman. Bill Finger was uncredited for years, but he is responsible for Batman’s look, backstory, personality,, setting etc. Bob Kane is responsible for the name and that’s pretty much it.

It’s surprising how many superheroes have Jewish roots.
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned this already but a jewish man also invented what we now call graphic novels. His name is Will Eisner and the most prestigious comic book awards were named after him. He drew the Spirit comics as well as many graphic novels like A Contract with God, New York: The Big City and many many more.
He also wrote and illustrated two books about making comics and sequential art. He was a fucking genius of visual narrative, character design and ripping your heart out with his stories.
The “White man with blond hair and blue eyes” originated as an “Aryan Superior Race” type of thing on like. 4Chan or something.
