The scale of Chinese aid to North Vietnam is staggering. They gave away more artillery pieces than Nazi Germany produced during the entirety of WW2 IIRC.

[–]Iron_Cavalry 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Even funnier was the fact that the Dien Bien Phu artillery pieces the Chicoms supplied to the Viet Minh were previously captured Nationalist guns supplied by America. The Viet Minh were using American artillery against American-armed French forces.

Irony is a bitch.

Boy, you should see how much aid the US gave South Vietnam!

[–]uncleartruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly transparent and damn near an open book compared to China. Why aren't they proud of themselves?

Too early for the comments.

[–]VirtualKnowledge7057 26 points27 points  (1 child)

considering the large amount of downvotes there already here, just waiting.

[–]Thiphra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's either defending the Mujahadin or atacking the Vietcong or both.

[–]No_Volume_5752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here.

[–]Spy_crab_ 60 points61 points  (6 children)

Well or course, the American Empire is evil, hence anyone fighting them is good. This is my worldview and anyone who disagrees is a fascist!

/s... obviously

Me when I see (modern) North Korea defenders getting upvoted. Bros really said USA is solely responsible for UN sanctions on North Korea (which is somehow the biggest reason for its impoverishment) when it requires China and Russia to also approve (they said USA is so powerful they made China and Russia obey lol).

It's a trope that when you fall too deep into anti-Americanism, USA becomes omnipotent superstate that is controlling everything and everyone.

[–]Zkang123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see plenty comparing it to the US blockade of Cuba

[–]Strike_Thanatos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In reality, the Soviet representative did not attend out of protest, and the Chinese seat at the UNSC was from the Republic of China, which now is more widely known as Taiwan. So, UNSC Resolution 83 passed 7-1, with another 1 absent and 2 present, but not voting.

Its just reskinned conspiracy of antisemetism
or (insert minority group here) if you think about it

[–]Suns_Funs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is so incredibly annoying when those americans strip everyone of their agency and just mindlesly cont8nue repeating "it is all because of military industrial complex".

[–]Parz02 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm no fan of the Vietcong, but yes, there is in fact a massive difference between an (ostensibly) communist movement and Islamist reactionaries.

[–]JKevill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do believe Vietnam had a better long term outcome from its anti imperialist war than afganistan. That same guy with the stinger missile on the bottom may well have shot it at a US aircraft as well. It’s the very definition of blowback.

I think your internet tankie guy doing this comparison is likely more a product of your imagination than anything else.

[–]TheDarkRam1996Oversimplified is my history teacher 38 points39 points  (7 children)

You can also see how people talk about today’s conflicts as well. Just look how Tankies defend literal Jihadists death cults like ISIS, Taliban, and Hamas despite the Anti-Communist and Pro-Fascist tendencies of these groups.

[–]VirtualKnowledge7057 48 points49 points  (2 children)

i mean, they will defend hamas but i barely see that happen with isis or the taliban, they mostly just talk about how the us backing the mujahideen means its there fault for the existence of an organization which was formed after they stopped there support, or (lets be honest this is kind of valid) gave way to the conditions that let isis take power.

yeah they do that with hamas a lot though

[–]2012Jesusdies 16 points17 points  (1 child)

People severely misunderstand how the CIA works. They don't go around funding every group, they don't have the resources to know every group and coordinate aid. Instead, they give funding to local allies, specifically the Pakistani ISI for Afghan mujihadeen and the ISI decides how the funding is actually allocated locally.

And Osama bin Laden was not a recipient of funding, he was the donor to different local groups and eventually making his own, that's the only thing setting him apart, his enormously rich background.

[–]Valuable-Blueberry30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, and also they can’t predict the future.

[–]ghostpanther218 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Ironic, cause both the Taliban and ISIS, and i would guess HAMAS too, are known to openly hate Russia. There was even an ISIS attack on St.Petersburg during the Ukraine war 2 years ago.

[–]VirtualKnowledge7057 4 points5 points  (0 children)

isis hates everybody though, being hated by them isn't unique, from what i know they considred hamas to illegitimate and fighting it the first step to facing israel.

[–]Zkang123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some do even defend 9/11 as America deserving it and even unironically quote stuff by Osama bin Laden about America

[–]JstaFriskyHusky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to yet find ISIS supporters except for the few people who joined years ago and are probably dead or enslaved. No one likes ISIS, not even other terrorist groups

[–]EmptyMirror5653 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol you're suprised communists support communists and not psychotic religious fundamentalists?

[–]Iron_Cavalry 18 points19 points  (15 children)

The NVA weren't even "defending themselves against foreign invaders," they were the ones invading neutral Laos and Cambodia in their ultimate goal to violently conquer South Vietnam.

And before any salts try to pull some whataboutism here, America's own crimes do not absolve the NVA or the VC of their crimes.

[–]Zkang123 15 points16 points  (1 child)

South Vietnam was virtually more of a US (and French) puppet to oppose the northern regime. It barely held itself together during its existence, and soon collapsed when the US withdrew

But yeah, the Vietnamese communists were also intruding into Laos and Cambodia to coordinate operations in South Vietnam. There was the Ho Chi Minh trail. Also these communists were supporting Laotian and Khmer communist insurgents.

There was also a prevelant fear in the rest of Southeast Asia of the domino theory

[–]Iron_Cavalry -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

South Vietnam was not a puppet under Diem, nor did it exist during the French occupation (it was created after the French withdrawal). Diem was a anti-colonialist nationalist and openly defied the Americans multiple times. He waged war against the Binh Xuyen French-aligned syndicate in Saigon.

South Vietnam was arguably a puppet under Thieu though.

[–]JKevill 10 points11 points  (7 children)

So the Viet Minh won a war of independence from France. The fact there even was a South Vietnam at all was an act of foreign intervention. It was basically an American puppet state- best evidence for that is the assassination of Diem at American behest.

The elections that were supposed to follow the Geneva accords in 54 were never held because the commies were gonna win. Since this was abhorrent to US foreign policy, south Vietnam was propped up.

[–]leaderofstars 10 points11 points  (4 children)

wasn't that in response to polpot threatening to spread his genocide into neighboring areas?

[–]Iron_Cavalry 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, this is referring to the construction of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in 1959 and the early 1960s, when NVA forces invaded both country’s eastern regions to bypass the DMZ defenses.

This triggered bloody civil wars in both countries that eventually led to the rise of Pol Pot (who the Vietnamese Communists allied with) against Lon Nol’s government.

That 1978 invasion you’re referring to only happened because Pol Pot violated Vietnamese sovereignty. Le Duan did not give a shit about Cambodian minorities.

[–]Zkang123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually thats after the Vietnam War

But the Vietnamese communists were definitely also supporting communist insurgents in Laos and Cambodia. There was the Laotian Civil War next door, and then Cambodia being mired in its own mess

[–]Hispanoamericano2000Senātus Populusque Rōmānus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pol Pot and the other Khmer Rouge would not seize power in Cambodia until 1975, coinciding with the fall of South Vietnam.

[–]whynotme7_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no their entire strategy was reliant on outmaneuvering the dmv and the lands of laos/cambodia was critical for such and relatively easy for the taking.

[–]Jinshu_Daishi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The communists who would wear that hat had been part of the mujahideen at the time.

[–]Low_Coast_7608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

everyone dig your trenches and wear your helmets, this comment section will turn in a warzone

[–]ZhenXiaoMing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second one was fighting the legitimate government of Afghanistan because they were teaching girls to read.

[–]kollipsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where have you seen this?

[–]LameAfro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do Tankies think of Pol Pot? He had a really cool theme song and that's about it lol
