[Intro]
(Ah)
[Verse 1]
Well, good for you, I guess you moved on really easily
You found a new girl and it only took a couple weeks
Remember when you said that you wanted to give me the world?
(World)
And good for you, I guess that you've been workin' on yourself
I guess that therapist I found for you, she really helped
Now you can be a better man for your brand-new girl (Girl)
[Chorus]
You look happy and healthy, not me
You're doin' great out there without me, baby
God, I wish that I could do that
I've lost my mind, I've spent the night
Cryin' on the floor of my bathroom
But you're so unaffected, I really don't get it
[Verse 2]
Well, good for you, I guess you're gettin' everything you want (Ah)
You bought a new car and your career's really takin' off (Ah)
It's like we never even happened
Baby, what the fuck is up with that? (Ah)
And good for you, it's like you never even met me
Remember when you swore to God I was the only
Person who ever got you? Well, screw that, and screw you
You will never have to hurt the way you know that I do
[Chorus]
You look happy and healthy, not me
You're doin' great out there without me, baby
God, I wish that I could do that
I've lost my mind, I've spent the night
Cryin' on the floor of my bathroom
But you're so unaffected, I really don't get it
[Break]
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
[Bridge]
But your apathy's like a wound in salt
Or maybe you never cared at all
Your apathy is like a wound in salt
Or maybe you never cared at all
[Chorus]
You look happy and healthy, not me
You're doin' great out there without me, baby
I've lost my mind, I've spent the night
Cryin' on the floor of my bathroom
But you're so unaffected, I really don't get it
[Outro]
Rodrigo refers to her ex leaving her quickly and moving on too fast. By admitting that she’s “too emotional” she tries to flip the blame onto her, but it is obviously a sarcastic comment. She’s playing the character the media has shaped her out to be, from her highly emotional songs: “drivers license” and “deja vu.”
Rodrigo addressed the sexism in an interview with The Guardian:
I try not to look at it or take that stuff super seriously. Sexist criticism of songwriters like me being told that they only write songs about boys, which is just BS in my mind. I’m a teenage girl, I write about stuff that I feel really intensely – and I feel heartbreak and longing really intensely – and I think that’s authentic and natural. I don’t really understand what people want me to write about; do you want me to write a song about income taxes? How am I going to write an emotional song about that?
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary apathy is defined as:
lack of feeling or of interest
The phrase ‘salt in the wound,’ which Rodrigo re-words, means:
to make a difficult situation even worse for someone
Since her ex isn’t bothered by the situation in the first place, she switches the phrase around to imply that their breakup was only a small wound to him that healed too quickly, while his lack of caring just makes the breakup that much worse for Rodrigo.
This line is similar to lines in Rodrigo’s hit single “drivers license:”
And I just can’t imagine
How you could be so okay now that I’m gone
Olivia has also talked about a lover who started seeing someone else only a couple weeks after they broke up on her emotional track, “traitor:”
It took you two weeks to go off and date her
Guess you didn’t cheat, but you’re still a traitor
Around the release of the track, rumors were swirling that Bassett and other Disney star Sabrina Carpenter were dating. Though not confirmed by either party, it would explain why Rodrigo would be upset that Bassett moved on so quickly without her.
Sabrina Carpenter’s song “Skin” was released in apparent response to “drivers license”. Some of the lines in the scathing diss track appear to be directly pointing to Bassett:
You can try
To get under my, under my, under my skin
While he’s on mine
While nothing is confirmed regarding who the songs are directed to, it appears to be a painful shot at Bassett for starting up a new relationship with Carpenter while Rodrigo was still getting over their relationship.
This lyric is very highly sarcastic, and reflects Olivia Rodrigo’s ex partner has easily moved on, While shes still mourning the breakup. It highlights her anger that he is seemingly “doing the work” and improving himself. It expresses her frustration that her ex-partner quickly moved on and seemingly used the professional help she recommended to become a better partner for someone else.
A therapist is a licensed, trained mental health, professional who helps peoples disorders.
In the first demo of this song, these lyrics originally read:
[…] really helped
Now you can be a better person for your brand new girl
Rodrigo first revealed the demo — which was recorded on her phone while playing guitar in her living room — in a voice memo during an interview with Vogue in July 2023.
Sociopaths or individuals with antisocial personality disorder are characterized by less empathy, less guilt and less remorse than a neurotypical person. They also are characterized by impulsivity.
Rodrigo bitterly notices that her former lover acts like they had never met. This line carries more weight with the assumption she is talking about co-star Joshua Bassett. Bassett and Rodrigo were both acting for the show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series which featured both as lead characters for Seasons 1 & 2. While it is unclear the timeline of when this song was written, Rodrigo and Bassett were rubbing shoulders throughout the filming/promotion of season 2, which was filmed from late 2020 to March 2021.
She also points at his empty promises, which are referenced throughout the album, such as in “Drivers License:”
Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me
‘Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street
‘Swearing to God’ is a way people emphasize how serious whatever they are saying is; similar to terms like ‘on my mother’s grave’ and ‘on my life.’ Yet in this situation, the emphasis meant nothing, and Rodrigo is bitter at the results of giving him her trust.
She also claims that he will never be able to experience her level of pain. This highlights her deep love for him, instead of it being a passing attraction or a fling; Olivia was deeply emotionally connected to him. It may also be a nod to the chorus and other verses, where he appears to be happy and having everything he has, while she suffers.
The chorus is Olivia speaking sarcastically. She isn’t actually happy for him; rather, she’s bitter about how he has been able to move on so easily. Interestingly, several other songs on SOUR echo this sentiment from different angles.
Rodrigo sings similar lyrics on “happier,” but without sarcasm:
I hope you’re happy.
I wish you all the best, really
Say you love her, baby
Just not like you loved me”
In “enough for you,” Rodrigo proclaims that he may be good for the moment, but it’s her who’s going to have the last laugh:
And they’ll think that I am so exciting
Then you’ll be the one who’s crying”
This song is probably referring to Joshua Bassett who was the assumed subject of Rodrigo’s two previous singles. “drivers license” and “deja vu.”
The supposed car may be the car Bassett rides in for his “Lie Lie Lie” music video. Rodrigo rides in a similar car in her music video for “drivers license” music video.
Bassett’s solo singing career started to take off, in part due to the publicity from Rodrigo’s music. On January 29, 2021 Billboard put him on their Emerging Artists Spotlight. And his self-titled debut EP was released on March 12, 2021. His single “Lie Lie Lie” has racked up a total of 19 million streams on Spotify.
In typical fashion, Rodrigo drops a well-placed profanity to drive her point home. “What the f*ck” is a common exclamation of confusion or anger. The line fits in perfectly with the rest of the song, carrying Rodrigo’s anger into harsh lines pointed at her ex.
Rodrigo complains to her ex that he moved on too fast, with similar themes appearing in her previous single, “drivers license.”
And I just can’t imagine
How you could be so okay now that I’m gone
This line could’ve been influenced by Taylor Swift’s 2008 track “Forever & Always.”
Baby what happened? Please tell me
Rodrigo has cited Swift as a major influence of her music career. The two even met on May 11, 2021, at the 2021 BRIT Awards.
