About to finally make the switch to linux. T he most important question is now: what distro do I use? (if you say arch, you use r/trans)
LEGENDARY NAME PULL WTF
PUT ME IN THE SCREENSHOT
>>70614 (OP)
Distros are basically a meme, what you need is OpenBSD. Every distro is bloated, OpenBSD IS REAL LINUX, it works with everything, the UI is like Windows, etc.

Debian or arch. Arch is unironically kino as installation teaches you quite a bit about linux. Debian is the best for a long term stable desktop.

Make sure you get a Linux that uses Wayland, that is the best thing ever and better than shitty X11.

OpenBSD has a really small memory profile, I've used it on a VPS before and it uses barely any ram at all on idle, like only 14 megabytes or something.
>>70630
It's great, basically similar to just about any other OS, you install it, install your software, install your desktop environment, etc.
Replies: >>70640
Distros to avoid:
Linux Mint: Bloated, no support for most graphics drivers
Arch: Impossible to install, made by troons
Debian: Basically comes pre-packaged with spyware
Fedora: RedditOS

The popular ones are the shittiest, go for the distros that you actually need.
OpenBSD uses like no RAM so use that if you want a super fast computer o algo.

chadgpt fact check
Alright, let’s unpack that statement piece by piece—both what it’s trying to say and where it falls apart.

---

## 1. “Distros are basically a meme”

What it implies:
Linux distributions are pointless, interchangeable, or just internet culture fluff.

Reality:
This is more rhetoric than argument. Distros exist because they make trade-offs: package managers, release models, defaults, target users (servers, desktops, embedded, security, etc.). Calling them a “meme” dismisses real engineering choices without engaging them.

This line is doing tribal signaling, not analysis.

---

## 2. “What you need is OpenBSD”

What it implies:
OpenBSD is categorically better than Linux distributions for most users.

Reality:
OpenBSD is excellent at *what it’s designed for*:

* Security correctness
* Code auditing
* Conservative defaults

But “what you need” depends entirely on the use case:

* Desktop user? Probably not.
* Gaming? No.
* ML / CUDA? Definitely not.
* General-purpose workstation? Often painful.

This is a prescriptive claim without context, which weakens it.

---

## 3. “Every distro is bloated”

What it implies:
All Linux distros are inefficient or overloaded.

Reality:
Factually false.
Examples:

* Alpine Linux
* Arch (minimal install)
* Void Linux
* Gentoo
* Embedded Linux builds

“Bloat” is usually a complaint about desktop environments and defaults, not Linux itself. OpenBSD avoids bloat by *not offering* many features—not because Linux is inherently bloated.

This is a strawman argument.

---

## 4. “OpenBSD IS REAL LINUX”

This is simply wrong.

OpenBSD:

* Is not Linux
* Does not use the Linux kernel
* Is a BSD Unix, with different design goals, licensing, and internals

To people in Unix/Linux circles, this line instantly kills credibility. It’s like saying:

> “This Toyota is the real Honda.”

So either the speaker:

* Doesn’t understand the difference, or
* Is using “Linux” as a vague synonym for “Unix-like OS” (which experts don’t do)

---

## 5. “It works with everything”

Reality:
This is almost the opposite of the truth.

OpenBSD is known for:

* Limited hardware support (especially GPUs, Wi-Fi, laptops)
* Lagging drivers compared to Linux
* Poor support for modern consumer hardware

Linux dominates hardware support because vendors target it. OpenBSD explicitly prioritizes correctness over coverage.

This claim is demonstrably false.

---

## 6. “The UI is like Windows”

What it implies:
OpenBSD is user-friendly or familiar to Windows users.

Reality:
OpenBSD:

* Ships with minimal X11 tools
* No modern desktop environment by default
* Requires manual configuration
* Assumes comfort with the command line

You *can* make it look Windows-like, but you can do that on Linux, macOS, or a toaster with enough effort. This says nothing meaningful.

---

## 7. Overall rhetorical pattern

This statement uses a classic tech-elitist rant structure:

* Absolute claims (“every”, “everything”)
* Dismissive language (“meme”)
* Identity signaling (“real Linux”)
* Confident tone masking factual errors

It’s less about helping someone choose an OS and more about:

> “I know the *real* stuff, and everyone else is wrong.”

---

## Bottom line

* OpenBSD is great — for security-focused, conservative, expert users.
* Linux distros are not a meme — they exist because needs differ.
* The statement is technically inaccurate, overgeneralized, and ideological, not analytical.

If you heard this in the wild, it’s best read as:

> “I like OpenBSD a lot, and I’m exaggerating to sound authoritative.”

If you want, I can rewrite this statement into a factually accurate version, or break down when OpenBSD actually *is* the right choice vs Linux.

BSD IS real linux though, ChatGPT is just wrong

Femtanyl would become Mentanyl and it would be songs about how cool being a man is and how he has evil parents who are trynig to cut his weiner off but using heavy rock he defied them and met jesus and wants to spread the word to save kids o algo

If we had that time machine we could fix so much.
>>70673
You should just kill Spez before Reddit is invented and ((( Jason Citron ))) before Discord is invented with that time machine. That's how you'll stop Arch from being used by troons

This is why I just say "Linux Mint" instead of giving them a big list of a bunch of nophono distros and telling a beginner "go and see which one works best for you :^)" because it would overwhelm them and make getting started with Linux much harder than it needs to be
