Logically what you said seems true. But the biggest reason why commuting allowance is so prevalent is income tax exemption. If you commute by train, you get receipts so you can use it as a proof to reduce your income tax. In the case of walking allowance, you don’t have corresponding receipts. In this way it may be not useful.
Western people tend to misunderstand the influence of Confucius culture in Japan. Unlike Korea and China, Confucius idea was just partly adopted in Japan, so that there is no convention to study long time to achieve higher social status. I think they feel surprised when they really know how less Japanese parents value their children’s academic performances.
Learning kanji itself lasts from the 1st to 6th grade in elementary school. You also learn new kanjis in literature class in junior high school, but the focuses are more on the contents of literature rather than kanjis. Personally I was able to read newspapers in the 5-6 grade in elementary school (of course the content was quite difficult to understand.)
They believe that if you are arrested, you got 99% guilty conviction lol. After browsing English website several years, now I’m sure that I can make Americans believe anything through internet. They are taught internet-literacy in school, but nobody can actually carry it out. They just memorize the phrase that “YOU NEED TO THINK CRITICALLY!!”, but don’t know what it means.
The other day I saw someone arguing that Japanese elderly people get only ¥68000 at maximum as pension. But most Japanese people know it’s just national pension(国民年金). Normally they get welfare pension(厚生年金) additionally, which is the main part of our pension system. When I mentioned it, I got downvoted(-20) lol.
I’m really surprised that I got downvoted. It’s really funny that redditors don’t know even 厚生年金(welfare pension), but somehow pretend to be “experts” on Japanese society. This reminds me of an Amerian who worked at English school in Umeda I went to before. He lacked basic skill of Japanese language, but often criticized Japanese society without knowing what’s actually going on around him. I noticed then his arguments were heavily based on Reddit threads.
