It's just too small a resolution to translate a character like Chudjak. Mario's look was specifically chosen based on this limitation. Everything that makes chudjak recognizable cannot fit on a 4-pixel tall face.

For light pink, it's used in outline (which must be grey), fists (light brown) t-shirt sleeves (red), cheeks and lips (pink) and hair (yellow). No color is closer than this one to these.

I probably should've gone to bed by now, but I've made a lot of progress. I found a decompiled dump of Donkey Kong with notes throughout it describing a lot of the game - not all of it, but enough. I've been able to find the palettes for almost everything. I also figured out how to change the title screen so I can make it say "HUNKY KONG", but the process is so slow and cancer that it's really going to suck. But in the end, this is actually going to turn out really gemmy.

Luckily you can change the tile type very easily, it's a single byte. But to move them you can go up or down, and to go left or right you have to cross above or below the screen to wrap around to the next tile spot over, so it's basically just hellish trial-and-error for each tile. Luckily I'm leaving "KONG" and NK in "DONKEY" alone, so that makes it way easier than a brand new title. It probably won't take… that long. I'm putting it off for now, though, since I want to leave anxiety-inducing hex editing for the end, once I'm done with the YY-CHR graphics changes.

You use the FCEUX emulator. It was designed for ROMhacking, so it has a lot of really incredible built-in tools and allows you to edit the ROM live. It's incredible.
For the graphics, I'm mostly just using YY-CHR to change them. Because it's very finicky, you have to be careful not to break anything here. This is what you do: you open the ROM in it, and at the bottom there are options to change how the sprite sheets are arranged, which is different for larger or smaller sprites. If you can get the sprites arranged right, you then click on the left screen onto where you want to edit, then the popup view on the right shows you what you can draw on o algo, but I recommend editing outside of YY-CHR because it really sucks. What I do is then press the "Copy" button, open up Piskelapp (it's a website), paste in there, and then edit/replace the sprites. However, you can't copy and paste back into it. So what you have to do is download that sprite, then put it into another program - in my case I'm using Photopea (free online Photoshop) - and then copy the selection there and then paste into YY-CHR. However, for some reason, the colors invert when you do that, so in Photopea or whatever you're using, you have to invert the photo first and then copy and then you can finally paste into YY-CHR. There is also one more program. I'm being serious, its name is Tile Molester. It's the sequel to Tile Layer Pro. I haven't had to use it yet, since YY-CHR has had everything I needed.
There are programs for drawing NES graphics like NEXXT, but I haven't needed them at all.
Now lets say you want to edit color palettes. This is where things get a bit tricky. I already know how to use a hex editor from ROMhacking other non-NES games. The process is largely the same here. For Donkey Kong, I was able to find an online list of the hex addresses of each entity's color palette, which you just find in the hex editor - and one is built into FCEUX, btw. However, while messing with FCEUX's tools, I realized that you could figure this out yourself by using the PPU Viewer and hovering over the color palettes at the bottom and then searching those values up in it. Anyways, the values in the "NES Color Palette" image posted a bit above in the thread are the corresponding colors, so you just change those to what you want. You're limited to 3 colors and a transparent pixel - in our case, the background is black, so we can also use that as just a black pixel for Hunky Kong.
Now lets say you want to edit actual game content. Maybe change some values so an animation plays faster, or jumpman jumps higher, or even edit the music or sfx, etc. How all of those are done is different in each games. Some games share engines, but a lot don't. Your best bet is either finding a list of hex addresses online for whatever it is you want to change, or even better, a decompiled copy of the game w/ notes throughout it telling you what is what. Without that I would be screwed on changing the title screen or editing music or sfx, it'd be impossible (for me) to figure it out.
I think that's the most important stuff. Also, keep backups, especially if you're hex editing, and download all your custom sprites in a folder or something. You really don't want to accidently corrupt your ROM and destroy your progress.
