Bicton Woodland Railway 18 inch

The Bicton Woodland Railway is a narrow gauge railway running in gardens in the grounds of Bicton House near Budleigh Salterton in Devon.

The line was built in 1962 as a tourist attraction for visitors to the house. Most of the rolling stock was acquired from the Royal Arsenal Railway, Woolwich, with two locomotives, Woolwich and Carnegie coming from that source, as well as seven goods wagons which were reduced to their frames and converted to passenger carriages. It opened to passengers in 1963. Originally locomotives and carriages had royal blue livery.

Additional rolling stock was acquired from the RAF Fauld railway and the internal railway of the LNWR Wolverton works.

In 1998 the Bicton Gardens were put up for sale and the railway put into hiatus. The new owners sold the line's existing stock and in 2000 took delivery of a 5.5-tonne diesel-powered replica tank engine. The line's original equipment was purchased by the Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills museum at Waltham Abbey.

Feldbahn 600mm

A Feldbahn, or Lorenbahn, is the German term for a narrow-gauge field railway, usually not open to the public, which in its simplest form provides for the transportation of agricultural, forestry (Waldbahn) and industrial raw materials such as wood, peat, stone, earth and sand. Such goods are often transported in tipper wagons, known in German as Loren, hence such a railway is also referred to as a Lorenbahn.

Milwaukee Zoo Safari Train 15 inch

The 15 in (381 mm) gauge rideable miniature railway, first opened in 1958, continues to transport guests around the zoo from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The railroad began operations using live steam locomotive #82, a 4-4-0 locomotive built in 1957 by the Sandley Light Railway Works of Wisconsin Dells, on commission of the Milwaukee Journal for the zoo. The #82 was later joined by #1958,a diesel locomotive built in 1959, followed by two additional steam locomotives: #1916, a 4-4-2 locomotive built in 1961, and #1924, a 4-6-2 locomotive built for the zoo in 1977. The #82 was eventually withdrawn, due to being too small to pull the longer trains the zoo needed to handle the crowds, and was placed on display. In 1989, the zoo loaned #82 to the recently rebuilt Riverside and Great Northern Railway, and later traded the engine to the R&GN for a second diesel, #1992.

Bucksgahuda and Western Railroad 2 foot

The B&W got started in 1966 when the Bauer brothers of St. Marys, PA, purchased a German-built steam locomotive through an advertisement in Trains magazine, and shipped the engine from Germany through Philadelphia to St. Marys. The first 15 feet of track were laid here just before the locomotive arrived, and the original engine house had to be built around the engine! After reconditioning this first locomotive, other equipment, rails, ties, and supplies were acquired over the years, notably in 1981 when the Joyce National Powder Co. of Eldred (PA) donated the entire plant railroad. With this additional equipment, interest in the project continued to grow and something new is added every few years. The large enginehouse was first constructed in 1983 and enlarged twice; the bridge built in 1985, the loop of track finished in 1986, and the turntable and water tower were added in 1992. In 1993, we were fortunate to acquire a diesel-electric locomotive and a Shay-type steam locomotive, also in recent years two additional enginehouse buildings and a 60 standard gauge boxcar were added for additional storage. The last few years have also seen construction of a quarter-mile branch line on the original St.Marys and Southwestern Railroad grade.

Bear Creek Park Train 15 inch

The Bear Creek Park Train with Eddy the Engine has been delighting children and adults since it opened in 1996.

It is a privately owned business run by Jassy Hans. The trains were brought over from England by Kevin McKlusky, who convinced the city of Surrey to allow him to run the train in Bear Creek Park.

In 1997 David and Linda Penn took over the business . David had a passion for the train and for the children. He designed the special events to delight the children, and he loved doing it until his death in 2012.

The 18 hole golf course was added in 2009 after consultation with the City of Surrey. In compliance with their regulations it is a landscaped course that meanders amongst the redwoods. It provides lots of fun for the whole family !

The land is leased from the city of Surrey and the train continues to be a main attraction for guests from all over the world.

Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad 18 inch

The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad, Inc. is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1968. Both the railroad and W.E. “Bill” Mason Carousel exist as a legacy of Billy Jones and as a means to preserve history and entertain the public. All proceeds and donations go to perpetuating the railroad and carousel, as well as maintaining our ability to provide historical and entertaining recreation for persons of all ages. Every penny made goes into preserving this gem in Los Gatos.

What does being a nonprofit mean? The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad is a private organization that receives no outside funding. We are not part of the town of Los Gatos or the county of Santa Clara, and lease the property that we are on from both entities. Every penny that is acquired though ticket, retail, and food sales goes back into the organization ? including costly repairs on all our equipment and buildings.

The railroad hosts special events to not only raise extra funds, but provide a different experience for our loyal patrons. Special events like the Pumpkin Train and the Holiday Train are a way for the railroad to ensure some funds for rainy days- quite literally, as we move into the slower winter season.

We can’t do it alone! We have a group of volunteers who give their time and resources to ensure that weekend after weekend the train and carousel can operate to provide a fun and inexpensive experience to the bay area, and a destination to the areas beyond.

The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad is committed to providing a great experience to children and adults alike. Ride aboard a real steam engine as it goes through beautiful Oak Meadow and Vasona Parks. Go round and round on 106 year-old carousel. The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad has rides, food, and most importantly fun!

Want to get in on all the fun? The railroad is always looking for great volunteers to continue the tradition and legacy of Billy Jones. If you don’t have time but have resources, all donations are tax deductible. Any help goes a long way for this little railroad.

The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad also provides great employment, ideal for students. The railroad provides great training in customer service, time management, money management, and food handling.

The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad operates in Oak Meadow Park with the cooperation of the Town of Los Gatos, and in Vasona Park with the cooperation of the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department.

Watford Miniature Railway 10 1/4 inch

The Watford Miniature Railway is a 10 1/4 inch (260 mm) gauge railway running in Cassiobury Park, Watford, Hertfordshire.

The railway was first opened at Easter 1959 by Charles Reed as a circuit adjacent to the River Gade. Initially there were two locomotives; an LMS Compound steam locomotive named 'Maid Marion' and a petrol powered 08 Shunter locomotive. In 1968 the steam locomotive left and the railway was sold to George Webb.

In 1979 the railway was sold to Jeff Price, who set about expanding and improving the railway. In the 1980s the station was rebuilt on a new site, accessed by a gated level crossing across one of the paths in the park. More coaches were added and a number of steam locomotives used.

On Mr Price's retirement in 2017, the railway was sold to new operators Southern Miniature Railways.

South Devon Miniature Railway 7 1/4 inch

The SDMR was formed towards the end of 1992 and saw its first public trains run in the Spring of ’93; at this stage the line was only a few hundred yards long and entailed an end-to-end operation with propelling in one direction from the station beside the shed.

However, the site at Buckfastleigh has boasted miniature railways of different gauges in the past before its current existence, starting back in the late 1970s when the Manning Wardle locomotive Yeo ran around a 7 1/4 gauge line. Evidence of this previous history can be seen at one of the foot crossings near the Rose Garden, where there is another rail embedded in the crossing laid to 10 1/4 gauge.

North Weald and District Miniature Railway 7 1/4 inch

The NW&DMR is maintained and operated by an independent volunteer group with the aim of providing a miniature train ride service around the garden grounds.

The Saffron Walden Society of Model Engineers who were originally based at the Audley End Miniature Railway have relocated to the NW&DMR having had to move from Audley End in September 2019. This of course has been a huge benefit to the NW&DMR with the arrival of more volunteers and rolling stock to help run the Railway.

The Route of the Railway is a single 1/4 mile loop around the garden area with a terminus station. The line is steeply graded and the locomotives have to work hard to get their trains round the track. The line also has a return triangle which enables trains to make several loops of the track before returning to the station.

There is already plans to extend the line to incorporate a double track mainline section with a dual gauge 7 1/4″ and 5″ line running east towards the M11 from the current loop layout. When complete this will give us a total running length of just over 1/2 mile!
