For decades, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus had established his image worldwide as a friend of the poor, an advocate of women's empowerment, and a campaigner for microcredit. Through paid campaigns and by the blessings of his Western masters, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for "alleviation of poverty", even though there are no success stories of microcredit in Bangladesh or elsewhere, millions were trapped in long-term debts. His "social business" model is applicable only in philanthropic schemes, while the "Three Zero" formula is another farce. He became vocal during various political movements and election-centric stalemates since the '90s, but he never ran for direct office because of his work toward depoliticization. Despite being a campaigner for Bangladesh's independence, he never paid tribute to the heroic freedom fighters of the 1971 Liberation War until becoming the Chief Adviser in 2024 as a puppet of the Western powers. His 559-day misrule as the head of the interim government helped people see his real face. Many have understood how he had long been playing tricks from behind a mask to gain power and sell off the country's sovereignty while trampling the spirit of the Liberation War, defaming the martyrs and the heroic freedom fighters.
Since 2024, he has failed to hide his violent and vengeful mindset against the former ruling party in violation of the Constitution and laws. He suppressed the dissent and muzzledpress freedom while influencing the judiciary and a section of the media to hide his violations and slander others through propaganda. He resorted to nepotism and abuse of power for personal gains. He used the army and jihadist mobs to capture power and carry out targeted killings and mass arrests. He showed hatred towards the pro-liberation forces, minorities, and cultural institutions. He adopted selective foreign policy to facilitate Pakistan and antagonize India as a servant of his Western masters, and jeopardized the country' interests. During this period, he was recognized as an influential Muslim leader even though he never practiced Islamic rituals and his microcredit model too is un-Islamic; he and his close aides were found on the list of friends of Jeffry Epstein, the unpopular US tycoon who used to run sex rackets involving minors; and his regime caused severe economic crisis in the country and made the poor poorer even though he was an economics professor. Ironically, Yunus also co-authored a 370-page book on the Qur'an, titled "Essential Message of Islam," published in 2009. These discrepancies in Yunus did not occur only after he gained state power; rather, throughout his life, he has always been a liar, hypocrite, and deceiver who prioritized personal interests over everything else.He himself prepared the rules of Grameen Bank when it came into being in 1983, but later violated them and amended them again and again for personal gains and to hide his misdeeds. When a government took any action, he challenged the decisions in court and delayed the proceedings by filing counter-litigations while telling his aides and the media that he was being harassed. In one of the addresses in 2023, Yunus told the media that people make mistakes (not crimes) while working on various issues, after he accepted a court verdict to pay fines, which was long overdue. On another instance, Yunus told journalists outside the court that being implicated in a case did not mean someone committed the crime—a legal statement that he never believed. Instead, he has always blamed his rivals, especially politicians, for a crime after someone is sued or arrested or charged.
Since independence, Yunus has worked closely with the undemocratic and military regimes and those who support US supremacy and radical Islam. During the BNP-Jamat government, Yunus proposed formulas to end the political stalemate over the formation of the caretaker government to oversee the elections slated for January 22, 2007. He surfaced in the political arena in 2005, at a time when the US was actively engaging with the two major political parties–the BNP and the Awami League–and civil society to press its agendas. After the military–under the leadership of BNP-appointed General Moin Uddin–seizedpower on January 11, declared an emergency,and suspended the election, they urged Dr Yunus to take up the responsibility of the Chief Adviser, an offer that he rejected outright. However, he recommended his close aide, Fakhruddin Ahmed, for the post. He campaigned for and appreciated the arrests of political leaders, including Tarique Rahman and his cronies, on charges of corruption and the restructuring of the election process to create a congenial atmosphere for democracy. He later suggested that the two top leaders of the BNP and Awami League be arrested as part of his "Minus Two" formula. A month after the 1/11 changeover, amid a ban on political activities, Yunus expressed interest in floating his own political party; he came forward, asking his well-wishers in civil society and the common people to join him in rebuilding the nation under his party, named "Nagorik Shakti," where the editor of a national daily was his second man. However, after a series of discussions with some political leaders and civil society representatives in the following weeks, he backtracked on May 3, citing a lack of adequate support from the people.
In December 2010, the Norwegian National TV aired a documentary on the Nobel laureate's mishandling of funds, questioning his ethical values. It prompted a high-powered investigation by the Awami League government, which unearthed massive anomalies, nepotism, and misuse of power in the operations of Grameen Bank and the creation of the associate enterprises. On March 12, 2011, Bangladesh Bank removed him from the position of Managing Director of Grameen Bank, as he was found holding the post way past his retirement age. After losing a legal battle against the decision, he sought the help of his friends and opposition parties at home and abroad, mainly US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, according to secret diplomatic documents and emails, to help him escape the investigations. He also funded street movements and the formation of student-led new political parties and civil society groups to oust the government and stop the legal proceedings, which would force him to pay hundreds of thousands of crores in unpaid taxes, while seeking sympathy, alleging harassment by the government. He came out successful on August 5, 2024, when a deep state-sponsored jihadist-army coup overthrew the Awami League government under the guise of a student-led movement, and established mobocracy. To cling to power, implement the US' blueprint, and hold a staged election, the Yunus regime banned the Awami League, arrested hundreds of thousands of leaders and activists, and butchered over a thousand people with the support of the UN, EU, Pakistan, the Bangladesh Army, the BNP-Jamaat clique, and his National Citizen Party (NCP).
This book presents the ugly side of Yunus hidden behind the mask–from financial irregularities to gross human rights violations, based on documentary evidence. But it covers only a handful of the misdeeds. We feel that this book will encourage academicians, researchers, journalists, and inquisitive minds to conduct an extensive examination into the works and thoughts of this devilish person for the sake of humanity.
