2026.04.16/2015-07-13: YouTube: Ryan M Reeves: Voltaire and the Radical Enlightenment:
Before: Early Globalization with 18th-century-people wearing weird hats in sone National England Gallery. Increased cultural awareness.
9:53: Prior to enlightenment, they certainly were more inclined towards more diverse ideas being absolute and fewer things being relative but it's always been a question. philosophical and question of life. Risky, over-simplistic view is you might say that the pre-enlightenment/world Brot all the things for the faith and doctrine and ethics and of the rightness and wrongness of the things around the in the category of the absolutes. This is obviously the case with the faith. no one in the Middle Ages believed that faith was relative. there were faiths handed down and the limits of describing the faith debated. Grey-areas are seen as mater of refinement. Not as an qualifier for faith being absolute, rather, it was an opportunity for maybe the Scholastics maybe the humanist is to get involved with trying to clarify what we believe about something versus what we shouldn't believe about it. 11:20 The main thing that begins to happen in terms of thought life of Europe and by extension in America is that things like faith and ethics and culture get moved more radically inte the relative category. They are taken out of the context of being one of the absolutes and they are moved over the side of relativism. Absolute: Rationalism, science, Enlightenment Throughout human thought history, it's always debated, what is timeless and what is temporal or momentary. Radical Enlightenment is moving the faith, doctrine, practice and in some senses, ethics, over the category of being relative.
12:10 Now there is some ambiguity here in the enlightenment understanding of virtue and morality and ethics. Some argued a little more radically that ethics itself, our moral code is itself relative.
12:50 Things that were considered to be in a previous era maybe in the Middle Ages so obviously part of the structure of the world that when they would come in contact with this, it just simply throws them for a loop. Some argued that the majority of ethical assumptions/code are cultural bound and therefore relative. (Other website-articles argued that Christian morals were preserved throughout 18th century. However, they will appeal to something called natural law and they attempt to use reason and logic and all these methods to come up with a set of basic human assumptions that everyone must abide by. They for example notice that no culture condones murder outright and so they'll try to find things that are timeless in the code of ethics. Others will be a little more conservative on the question and they will try to keep the majority of their you might say Christian European ethics but they'll try to take the faith-component out of them and they'll try to argue that all these pieces are based on logic and reason and on the principles of the enlightenment. Lot of complexity here. We don't want to make it overly simple but by and large what is happening in the radical enlightenment again is that faith is being moved over to the relative side of this equation. For everyone though involved in the Enlightenment particular in the 18th century, for all the leading thinkers, the great hope was that science and reason would be the things that guarantee an adequate foundation and structure for the world around them. They were optimistic in other words taht in their categories through they had moved faith over, that their principles of reason, of process and of logical thinking of the sciences would be the thing that guarantee our foundations.
14:35 How does Voltaire fit into this and how does he embody this change? (Voltaire wrote revisionist history such as the early modern humanists were atheists and not orthodox Christians with a few lax Christians.)

youtube .com/watch?v=XtYmxQdMMbo : 2024-05-14: Earlier: Post-racial fascism. Fascist-inventor Mussolini said that race is a feeling. It's about the state taking political opponents. (I think he was a cultural nationalist as in state defines culture.) Jreg said we need fascism somehow. 16:00 Leftists focus more on ideological purity meanwhile most right-wing-infightings are calling each other Jews.
17:00 Leftists protested their extreme left candidate more than the lobby-paid Zionist one. Standard stuff.
20:27 In conclusion: Things are getting more extreme. The center is reacting to them. The right has dropped racism and is multi-ethic. Left eats themselves and is wider than ever. We probably see more of that stuff. That's the surface.
