Time for a new engine? Or call it quits ?

On my way to Alaska I had 3 overheating failures, to continue my trip we put a head gasket sealer. Then TCCN recommended new block or a used engine, back in June last year.

I didn’t do anything until a month I had code P0301 followed by a rough idle.
I replaced the spark plugs, fuel injectors and coils, idle improve a little but the code appeared again on the same cylinder 😐

Now the decision is, if I want to buy a new short block a used engine or sell it as is. Here’s the video of my journey.

The head is cracked causing the 301 with continuous steam cleaning of that one cylinder. It will keep on going - it would help if you would release the pressure on the radiator every time you shut it down, ask me how I know....

Have you had a chance to compression test the engine?

I experienced a P0304 on my 2zz in the past. Even swapping the coils and plugs with cylinder 1, the misfire stayed on cylinder 4.

Another experience I had was a cylinder 2 misfire. Compression dropped to 70 psi. Pulled the motor and found a blown out piston ring land.

It is very probable that there’s internal damage for the misfire. Compression test will show this. Test the cooling system for combustion gas in the coolant. If none is contaminated the coolant, then less probable you have a cracked head or short block.

Does the oil smell coolant contaminated? Any smoke out of the tail pipe? Sorry, didn’t watch the video yet.

Please document what you find.

Though, I’d start with the oil pan and check the pickup tube for any metal. Then pull the intake and exhaust manifold to see the valves. Maybe you bent a valve.

Have you had the injectors serviced in the past with TCCN? Coils and plugs didn’t remedy the misfire just like mine. On the 2zz, I didn’t notice the armature of the plug and electrode were broken off by the piston. Mine was mechanically hurt.

At TCCN I had the timing chain, water pump, thermostat, replaced and a new EVAP system, I'm definitely sure the block is done and after hard thinking, I rather buy a new short block than a used engine. I will disassemble whatever I can on my capabilities, the rest would be with my brother in law and a master tech that I know to do it in our leisure time, so it's going to take a while.

As you guys know I was diagnosed to have a new engine on my car, well I want to do a new one starting by ordering a short block (new) and transfer the components that were replaced on 24 to it, this Friday after waiting over a month the short block arrived at the dealer but unfortunately, it was heavily damaged during transport, they said find this new blocks are getting harder and it may take over a month for them to allocate another one, my car has been seating since February. Unfortunately I think this is it for me, I won't deal with a used engine, after 16 years 236K miles traveling cross country, teach my kids to drive on it, it's time to say good bye seeing my car in the garage accumulating dust breaks my heart :(

I got my car up and running with the rough iddle and a parasitic withdraw, I have to disconnect the battery so it doesn't drain it, we fund the water pump is leaking and this is very dissapointing taking in consideration that it was replaced 2 years ago with an OEM by the car care nut, also there's another code C1201 tht ias popping up as well.

Today I'm taking it to the dealer to diagnose the withdraw.
